Protecting Your Family from Fraud Over the past decade, the onset of fraud and scams have grown rapidly. Anyone can become a target. Below is a quick overview of today s more common scams, including recovery scams, lottery scams and secret shopper scams. Who to Contact If you become a target of these or other frauds, report the crime to the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov and the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov. Recovery Scams For those who have already fallen for a fraud or scam, the recovery scam is especially invasive. The fraudster poses as a government agency responsible for working on the intended target s case. The target of the fraud is asked for a moderate sum of cash to complete the investigation. Target: Seniors or anyone who has fallen for a previous scam. Tip: No government agency will ask for payment to do their job. Secret Shopper A recipient is sent a real check, asked to cash the check and wire a portion of the funds via MoneyGram or Western Union to the fraudster posing as a legitimate company. Whatever is left from the cashed check is theirs to keep. However, the check is not legitimate. By the time the recipient cashes the check and wires money to the fraudster, the damage is done. Target: Mainly seniors. Tip: Always wait at least five days before spending any funds after cashing a check to ensure it can be processed. Lottery Scam A lottery scam is sent via email. In the email, the recipient is urged to call an agent to claim a large cash prize. The agent is actually a fraudster who will attempt to scam a processing fee or transfer charge from the target. The promised lottery funds are never awarded. Target: Anyone with an email address. Tip: You must have purchased a lottery ticket to win. Lottery winners are not contacted via email.
