Major positions of trust: 1998 to 2008 European Union of National Associations of Water Suppliers and Waste Water Services (Eureau), Member of Drinking Water Commission Eureau s mission is to promote the common interests of its members to the Community institutions and to keep its members informed of relevant developments in the European arena. Eureau s three standing Commissions are in charge of elaborating Eureau policy positions and report to the Board on their specialist areas. The commissions are made up by practitioners from drinking water and waste water companies and national associations. They provide forums for sharing and exchanging experiences and views on implementation of existing directives as well as policies relating to new directives, framework and strategies. These exchanges help formulate useful feedback and advice to the major European Institutions, member state governments, and regulators. 1998-2002 National Technology Agency of Finland, Technology Programme on Water Services 1997-2001, Programme Manager The programme consisted of 19 applied technical research projects and 20 industrial R&D projects. The total cost of the programme was 11.4 million Euros. Programme manager was in response of coordination, follow-up of projects, information exchange, dissemination of result etc. 1999-2004 European Commission (EC), Regulators Group for Construction Products in contact with Drinking Water (RG-CPDW) The aim of the RG-CPDW was to establish a European Approval System for construction products in contact with drinking water. The RG-CPDW comprised regulatory representatives and scientific experts appointed by Member States and representatives from relevant DGs of the EC. 1999-2005 Eureau, Member of Waste Water Commission 2001 to date National Journal for Water Resources Engineering (Vesitalous), Member of the Editorial Board, Issue Editor of 4/2001, 1/2003, 4/2003, 4/2004 and 3/2005 editions. Vesitalous is a leading journal for water and environment in Finland and has been published since 1960. 2002-2005 IWA Leading Edge Conference on Water and Wastewater Technologies, Member of Programme Committee The annual Leading-Edge Conference on Water and Wastewater Technologies is focused specifically on advances and developments in water and wastewater technologies. The conference consists of a single plenary session of invited speakers on the first day, followed by two parallel sessions (one for drinking water and one for wastewater) on days two and three. So far, the conference has been in Netherlands (2003), Czech (2004) and Japan (2005). Next conference will be in Singapore (2007).

2003 to date 4. Nordic Drinking Water Conference, Chair of the Programme Committee 5. and 6. Nordic Drinking Water Conference, Member of the Programme Committee 2003-2005 The Helsinki Commission (HELCOM), Observer Member representing Eureau The Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) works to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea from all sources of pollution through intergovernmental co-operation. 2004-2005 Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform (WSSTP), Chair of the Board, Chair of the Thematic Working Group 2 Water for People The Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform (WSSTP) is one of the technology platforms that are set up within the European Environmental Technology Action Plan (ETAP) that was adopted by the European Commission in 2004. It is a European initiative, open to all stakeholders involved in European water supply and sanitation and major end-user groups. The participants in the platform have produced a common vision document for the whole European water industry together with a strategic research agenda and an implementation plan. 2006-2007 Eureau, Chair of the Joint Working Group for Research A joint working group for research was launched in the beginning of 2006. It has determined the research needs of the water industry by a web-based survey and communicated them to DG Research (Dr. Andrea Tilche). It has also developed a research strategy for future Eureau activities, which Eureau BoM has accepted. 2006 to date 2006 to 2008 Integrated project TECHNEAU (Technology Enabled Universal Access to Safe Drinking Water), Chair of the Project Advisory Committee TECHNEAU is the biggest EU-funded project on drinking water ever; it challenges the ability of traditional system and technology solutions for drinking water supply to cope with present and future global threats and opportunities. This will be initiated through rethinking of current water supply options and by providing researched and demonstrated new and improved technologies for the whole water supply chain. Decade for Water programme, Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture, Manager of the strategy work Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture has launched an initiative to create an umbrella programme Decade for Water. It aims to improve the competitiveness of water sector, provide system solutions, improve competence, support sector s policy, promote international visibility etc. The strategy work consists of scoping and planning, where the interest of funding bodies is determined, focus areas are listed, boundaries and objectives are set and management structure introduced. The programme is not limited to R&D although a joint programme between Tekes and Academi of Finland is expected to form a solid foundation.

2006-2007 Water Supply Pool, The National Board of Economic Defence (NBED), Secretary of the Pool Partnership between the public and private sectors is most conspicuous in NBED's pool organisation. The pools are bodies managed by the business world and responsible for operative preparedness. Their task is to monitor, study, plan and prepare measures for improving security of supply in their own branches, in co-operation with companies. In 2006, a new pool for water supply was founded.
