Jürgen Koch Vice President Automation Hydraulic compact actuator linear EMG-HKAL durable and maintenance-free use in the steel industry Whenever it comes to opening, closing or positioning in the steel industry, the electro-hydraulic compact actuator linear HKAL from EMG is on the spot. Compact in design, it is flexible for various applications in steel mills. In contrast to conventional hydraulic units the EMG-HKAL offers a motor-under-oil-design. Hermetic sealing makes the HKAL robust against extreme environmental influences such as dirt, moisture or extreme temperature fluctuations, and significantly minimizes servicing requirements over its entire lifetime. Each actuator is prepared by EMG for the
Page 2/6 particular application on a project-specific basis. Along with EMG s typical clear interface definition and simple system integration, it substantially reduces the effort required for putting it into operation. Versatile application Whether it s in the coking plant, the blast furnace, the foundry, or on the conveyor belts in storage areas the HKAL linear actuators from EMG are found in all areas of steel production. Important applications include: in the blast furnace during opening and closing of bunker flaps in the stockhouse, in belt conveyors as an adjusting actuator for skimmers to clean conveyor belts, as an actuator for the movement of conveyor belt chutes or with coil handling on lifting and transport carts. For these applications the HKAL is designed in Blast furnace process North Duisburg Landscape Park its standard variant for actuating forces between 10 and 250 kn. It achieves a stroke length of up to 2000 mm with control speeds of up to 25 mm/s. Since it is completely sealed it makes it possible to operate at high and low temperatures between -40 C to +70 C at a humidity of 100 %. A version for use in explosive environments and other special technical solutions is possible. In a current project the HKAL shows its capability in the operation of switches for rail transport in an ore mine. Coil lifting cart EMG solution for a coil lifting cart Within steel plants, coils must constantly be transported from one processing step to the next. For this there are the so-called coil lifting carts which allow quick transport and precise alignment for entry into the next process. The HKAL is ideally suited especially for lifting and lowering coils onto the coil lifting carts. It can completely replace conventional hydraulic solutions in this case. These are generally separated into actuators and working cylinders. The hydraulic circuit must be made via hoses or pipe connections, which always represent a potential leakage point in the system. Due to its compact dimen sions the actuator in the HKAL can be positioned directly on the cylinder. The otherwise necessary coupling links are completely removed, and potential interference points are eliminated. EMG has an actuator available with a particularly high setting force specifically for use on lifting carts: the HKAL-P 400/200. This provides a setting force of 400 kn with a stroke of 200 mm and a control speed of 15 mm/s. Trust in the solution from EMG EMG has over 60 years of experience in the development of electro-hydraulic actuators for a plentitude of industrial applications. With the HKAL linear actuators EMG builds on this wealth of experience and supplements it with innovative ideas that lead to the unique compact design with maximum efficiency. Thus absolute reliability is achieved that EMG s customers can trust.
Page 3/6 New product brochure for the hydraulic compact actuator linear HKAL Where ever fixed, predefined linear movements have to be performed in or on a plant, machinery or an apparatus, the hydraulic compact actuator linear (HKAL) lends itself for this use. Now a new brochure is available for this product. Along with the product description it contains technical data and a selection of references, as well as a prepared questionnaire to be filled out for the operational and environmental conditions at the customer. The 16-page brochure can be downloaded in English and German from our website at http:///en/antriebstechnik/ hydraulic-compact-actuator/. If you need printed copies, please contact Nicol Hoffmann (nicol.hoffmann@emg-automation.com). The hydraulic compact actuator linear is based on EMG s unique motor-oil-under-design. The motor is completely hermetically sealed and thus protected from any harmful environmental influences. By means of a special flange mounting on the cylinder, pipe or hose connections are not needed to ensure the oil flow. As a result, the HKAL is destined even for operational environments where conventional mechanical or hydraulic drive solutions are only very expensive or even not feasible. As always, customer value and customer satisfaction are the focus with the HKAL the customer gives us the operational and environmental conditions, after which EMG determines the HKAL s appropriate design and configuration. Then the customer receives a plug and play solution that requires a minimal commissioning period: completely filled, ventilated, and with customer parameters preset in the EMG workshop. Success in Japan for EMG EMG technology for Jindal South West (JSW) The Japanese corporation, Steel Plantech will furnish three production lines shortly for their customer, Jindal South West, with components from EMG. This year a continuous hot-dip galvanizing line (CGL) and a continuous annealing line (CAL) will be supplied in Japan, followed by another CAL next year. EMG was able to prevail against a competitor and assert herself in the traditionally difficult Japanese market with this order. The CGL processes strips with strip widths of 800 to 1870 mm and strip thicknesses of 0.35 to 2.3 mm. The strip speed is 280 m/min at the beginning of the continuous strip production line, 180 m/min in the middle, and 280 m/min at the exit. Two sensor positioning devices strip centre EVM2-CP are used at the uncoiler. Seven inductive strip position
Page 4/6 measurement sensors SMI-SE and one inductive strip position measurement sensor SMI-HE are incorporated into the control units. In addition, two strip edge sensor positioning devices EVK2-CP, two inductive strip centre sensing systems IMH2, six electric servo cylinders ESZ and one inductive strip centre sensing system IMM2 are used. The CAL is likewise designed for strips of 800 to 1870 mm width and 0.35 to 2.3 mm thickness. The speeds here are 580 m/min, 430 m/min in the middle, and 630 m/min at the exit, a good deal higher than in the CGL. The components from EMG used here are very similar to the CGL: Two sensor positioning devices strip centre EVM2-CP, six inductive strip position measurement sensors SMI-SE, one inductive strip position measurement sensor SMI-HE, two strip edge sensor positioning devices EVK2-CP, three inductive strip centre sensing systems IMH2, three inductive strip centre sensing systems IMM2, and a total of twelve electric servo cylinders ESZ are used here. The Japanese market is essentially quite closed. Due to the good cooperation of Jindal South West with the EMG representation in India and the brisk sales activities by EMG s Japanese representative, the Japanese Steel Plantech Corporation as OEM was able to be convinced by EMG s services. In the end, it wasn t the price that was the decisive argument for the contract award, but rather the compelling technological concept, which involved an optimized plant layout. Once again it has been shown that close cooperation, expert advice, and solutions based on the customer s interest lead to success. Or, as EMG India sales manager, Rajeev Jain, said after the contract award: This was my nicest day at EMG to date. EMG servo valve new developments for more efficient use Long operating life, reliability and accuracy have been the hallmarks of EMG servo valves for many years. Valves from the series SV 1-10 are among the most frequently used solutions for control hydraulics from EMG. Now the new developments in the valve s design provide an optimized weight and thus improved handling, from production to operation and on to maintenance. A special aluminum alloy is used primarily for weight reduction. Only a few key components are manufactured from other materials. The complete manufacture is performed by EMG except for the cast parts. A first version is limited to nominal pressure level 120 bar. The first prototypes in the EMG production test facility had very good results that are currently being substantiated by long-term trials.
Page 5/6 The most important benefits of the EMG servo valves are: Flushing of the valve during operation Also suitable for low pressures Single-stage version Guaranteed minimal friction losses High repetition accuracy Large capacity range for single-stage valves Also added to the new product generation: Optimized weight Efficient handling through the complete product cycle METEC 2011 a complete success EMG s exhibition stand at this year s METEC was a total success.
