This dissertation provides an overview of the issue from a sociological perspective, something that has not been done before, as the problem has been examined solely from a public health perspective. By doing this, there are new insights into the issue. For example, by applying sociological theories of deviance to the problem of underage drinking, one can predict that underage students will continue to ignore the law until society affirms that it is a law truly worth enforcing. Second, more attention needs to be paid to students that don t drink, in particular to minority students who drink at significantly lower levels than white students. This raises important questions, like why do African American students drink less when they attend majority white schools? Why do Asian- American, Latino, and Black students all have drinking patterns that differ significantly from one another? Finally, this dissertation evaluates and recommends the most effective methods available to battle the drinking problem occurring on America s college campuses.
