Children s Social Work Academy Working for Children s Services Recruitment pack

We are aiming high for Cumbria s children We ll help you make the difference We want Cumbria to be a great place to be a child and grow up; a place of opportunity where young people are able to live happy and productive lives and a place where young people will want to live and work in the future. We have included this ambition in our council plan. That s why I m thrilled that Cumbria County Council s Social Work Academy is now recruiting its first newly qualified social workers. The academy is a key element of my vision for Cumbria County Council Children s Services. Through the academy newly qualified social workers can learn from experienced practitioners and develop the skills that will help them meet the real challenges that a career in social work brings. I m excited about what the academy can achieve and for me it s a win, win, win for social workers, for the council, and most importantly for children and families. We have faced a number of challenges over the past few years, with reducing budgets and an Ofsted inspection which found our safeguarding services to be inadequate. As such we are going through a dramatic period of change. The academy is an important part of that process of change and improvement and I m looking forward to seeing it develop, grow and make a difference to the lives of children and families. I hope you will consider joining us. John Macilwraith Corporate Director of Children s Services 2 cumbria.gov.uk

Children s Social Work Academy Could you be who we re looking for? We re looking for the best newly qualified social workers to join our Social Work Academy and gain the skills and experience to really make a difference for children and families. We are recruiting 15 NQSW s to join the academy over a two year period. As an academy member you will receive a comprehensive package of support, training and skill development which will help you become an outstanding social worker, ready to make a difference to the lives of the most vulnerable children and young people within Cumbria. You will hold your own case after few weeks in post, supported with one to one professional supervision. After a year you will be able, through a rolling interview process, to apply for higher level positions in social work with a level of skill and experience that few NQSWs could match. The academy is our blueprint for developing quality and standards in social work practice and championing social work in Cumbria. Social work is a profession, and for us social workers are the experts in protecting children. We need people who share that vision. Lesley Sanczuk, Principal Social Worker says, I am delighted that we have established a social work academy in Cumbria, and to be leading on such a cutting edge development. I am committed alongside the Director of Children s Services to developing social work practice and to supporting social workers to be the very best they can; to promote a clear line of communication and voice for social work from the front line, through to the Corporate Director and Chief Executive. The academy will prepare you for frontline practice and give you the foundation on which to develop the rest of your social work career. Could you be who we re looking for? How to apply Applications open 14-29 May. Apply via cumbria.gov.uk/socialworkacademy Shortlisting w/c 1 June. Interview assessment days 18 and 25 June to be held in Penrith, Cumbria. If you are an experienced children s social worker you can also benefit from our academy. For current vacancies and recruitment incentives visit cumbria.gov.uk/jobsandcareers 3

Children s Social Work Academy The financial challenge The past few years have been challenging for Cumbria County Council as local authority budgets across the country have reduced. We have faced unprecedented pressures on our budget and this has presented many new challenges and opportunities to think differently about how we use our resources to deliver our priorities. Over the next financial year the council will continue to be faced with significant reductions to the funding we receive from central Government, which along with residents Council Tax, pays for the services we provide. The total value of savings agreed by 2014/15 is 24.4m. All told, the council needs to save another 89 million between 2014/15 and 2016/17 this is on top of the 88 million which the council has already saved since 2010/11. These reductions require the council to find innovative solutions to save money and reduce costs. Cumbria a big county with big opportunities Do you share our vision and ambition? Our achievements Our interactive Achievements document highlights some of our recent achievements and shows how we continue to deliver good quality services that positively impact on the quality of life for people and communities in Cumbria.
