Introduction The National Ski Patrol - Instructor Development Course is designed for the Patroller to gain the knowledge of the educational process within the National Ski Patrol System. Successful completion of the Instructor Development serves two purposes: 1. Prepare potential instructors to teach the various NSP courses. 2. Serve as a Senior Elective for students working toward completion of the Senior Program. http://www.nsp.org/eduprograms/instructor.aspx The NSP Instructor Development Program The National Ski Patrol NSP) doesn t grow patrollers, it builds them. Each patroller learns his or her skills from a certified NSP instructor. These hardworking instructors are the backbone of all NSP education programs; without them, there would be no patrollers. The skills learned in the NSP Instructor Development Program ID) focus on principles of adult education that are applicable to any field. The ID course a series of presentations, activities and discussion opportunities is available through a one- day class or via a CD- based e- course. Once completed, instructor candidates move on to the Mentoring Program, an individually planned program administered under guidance of a discipline- specific advisor, which preps them for certification as an NSP instructor. The NSP is always seeking talented instructors to deliver its OEC, OET, MTR, Avalanche and ID programs. To learn more about instructor development opportunities, contact your division ID supervisor or region coordinator. Instructor Development Course The ID course covers the various areas of instruction and how instructors can apply them to create a positive learning experience for their students, and helps build a strong foundation of educational knowledge for use when planning and delivering lessons. The general information covered in Instructor Development is applicable to all potential NSP instructors, regardless of instructional specialty. 3

Let me know in advance what was important for me to learn and what skills were expected of me. Had expectations for me that were appropriate in terms of my background and experience. DURING THE LESSON THE INSTRUCTOR: The Course Evaluation should be completed by each student and collected and returned to the Division Supervisor following the course. NOTE: This is a new form 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 1. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. Required me to understand and perform rather than simply recall facts. How? Drew upon the knowledge and background of trainees. Used visual aids that helped me understand the material. Circle any that apply: charts, overheads, slides, videos, movies, other:. Encouraged an open sharing of ideas. Knew when and if trainees did not understand. Scheduled the learning at a comfortable pace. Provided feedback in a way that was helpful to me. Periodically highlighted and summarized in order to make the learning easier to understand and to remember. Spoke clearly and was easily understood. Was a good listener. Seemed to enjoy teaching the lesson. Was concerned about my performance. Was knowledgeable. Did not convey that he/she had all the answers. I accomplished what the instructor expected me to accomplish. 2. What was your general impression of the lesson and/or instructor? 21. What changes additions, deletions, revisions) would you make to improve the program? 22. Additional comments or elaboration of any of the above items are welcome. 212 National Ski Patrol 2

Continuing Education Senior Alpine or Nordic Senior Patroller To maintain Senior Alpine or Nordic classification, patrollers must complete national or Division authorized clinics once every three years. Patrollers will be given performance feedback during these clinics. Participation in these clinics fulfills the requirement; participants do not need to meet a performance standard. To maintain the Senior Patroller classification, Senior Patrollers are required to meet the continuing education requirement once every three years by retaking the aid room module or serving as an evaluator, advocate, or trainer for this module at least once every three years. 25
