19 Part B: The Video Component All candidates are required to submit a DVD or flash drive containing a brief introduction and excerpts from their CanSkate session. Videos should not exceed 1 hour. Submissions may be a continuous film or excerpts on different days of your CanSkate session. The main focus of the video is to capture the coach candidate leading the various portions of the CanSkate session. Step One: Preparation q Inform parents/guardians in advance that you will be filming for professional development purposes. The footage from this evaluation portfolio will be reviewed with the sole purpose of the NCCP Instruction Beginner CanSkate Coach Certification. Step Two: Video Introduction Begin your DVD with a brief introduction of yourself either on or off the ice. Limit the total time of this section to five minutes or less. Include: q A brief introduction of yourself q Your main strength and challenge as a CanSkate coach (explain one of each) q A brief introduction to the CanSkate session on which you are teaching Step Three: CanSkate Session Video Candidates are required to film and submit all sections of their CanSkate session as outlined below. If they are not usually responsible for leading one of the session components they must plan to lead it for the day of filming. Each section of the video does not need to be filmed on the same day or with the same group of skaters. Warm-up q Coach candidate must lead complete choreographed warm-up. Lesson Time q Coach candidate must instruct a lesson. Lesson times should be minimum 10 minutes in length, and should not exceed 15 minutes. q For the lesson filmed, please complete the lesson plan on the template provided below. q Lessons may not be filmed during assessment days, and must include a progression circuit. 20 Fast Track and Fun Zone q Excerpt(s) showing how the Fast Track is used during the CanSkate session. Coach does not need to be shown coaching in the Fast Track. o Include a brief verbal explanation of how the Fast Track is used during your CanSkate session. q Excerpt showing how the Fun Zone is incorporated into your session. o The coach does not need to be part of the video showing the Fun Zone, but could provide a brief verbal explanation of the Fun Zone as the clip is being shown. Note: Please keep these two excerpts (Fast Track and Fun Zone) to a total of five minutes Filming Procedures To assist you in producing your video to standard, we suggest that you consider the following filming procedures: q During the warm-up, group activity and cool-down sections music should be audible. The coach s voice does not need to be audible at this point. q During the lesson time the voice of the coach should be audible at all times. This means that the camera must be close to the coach. Therefore, the person filming must be on the ice and be a registered Skate Canada member. It is up to you to ensure the video is audible. In cases where the coach cannot be clearly heard and understood, the video will be returned unmarked and will need to be refilmed and resubmitted at the candidates expense. q Fast Track and Fun Zone excerpts do not need to capture the session music. An overview of what the Fun Zone looks like, including extra teaching aids, challenge skills and Fast Track components should be included verbally. q The end result of the video must provide the Learning Facilitator with a clear view of the different components of the session and the coach candidates participation in all areas. 18 NCCP CanSkate Certified Coach Evaluation Portfolio
