27 March 2015 Instructions for Installing and Using the FOCUS DL-15 Data Transfer Software Introduction This guide will walk you through the process of transferring data from the FOCUS DL-15 to the computer using the DL Data Download and Processor transfer program. There are 4 steps for the initial transfer of data from the FOCUS DL-15 to the computer. After the initial setup, proceed straight to Step 4 for subsequent downloads. 1) Install the DL Data Download and Processor transfer software onto the computer. 2) Install and load drivers that will allow the FOCUS DL-15 to communicate with the computer. 3) Locate and determine the correct COM port used by DL Data Download and Processor. 4) Transfer data from the FOCUS DL-15 to the computer using the transfer software. 1) Install the DL Data Download and Processor transfer software on the PC Browse to and locate the setup installation program called FOCUS2DL_V2.x.x_Setup.exe. After the DL Data Download and Processor software has successfully installed on the computer, the program will be available both on the Desktop as a shortcut icon and in the Start Menu located in the DL Data Download and Processor directory. 2) Install and load drivers to the PC to communicate with the FOCUS DL-15 To transfer files from the FOCUS DL-15 to the PC, you need to download driver installation files, then install and configure the FOCUS DL-15 drivers. Note: If you ve previously installed the USB driver that connects the FOCUS DL-15 to the PC, you can advance to step 3 to determine the correct COM port used to transfer files from the FOCUS DL-15. Download driver installation files There are two options to get the FOCUS DL-15 driver. You can either download the latest driver for your PC from the manufacturer s website, or you can use either of the provided driver files on the CD that may be correct for your machine. 1) You can get the latest driver from the manufacturer at: http://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/pages/usbtouartbridgevcpdrivers.aspx Download the driver, extract the zip file, and then locate the correct driver (either x64 or x86.exe) for your machine. http://partners.spectraprecision.com Page 4
2) Alternately, you can install the driver for your machine using either of the provided files on the CD. Install and configure the required FOCUS DL-15 drivers Once you have the correct FOCUS DL-15 driver for your machine, start the install wizard and click through the installation process. http://partners.spectraprecision.com Page 5
The system will indicate Scan during the installation after selecting Install. After a short time files will copy over, then the install will indicate Installation completed successfully. Power on the FOCUS DL-15 and connect to the PC using the provided mini-usb cable. Windows will likely autodetect the hardware then search for the available driver. http://partners.spectraprecision.com Page 6
After Windows detects and finds the driver for the FOCUS DL-15 it will indicate that it s Ready to use the device. Proceed to step 4 if the device is Ready to use. If Windows does not automatically detect and install the driver, you can use the Device Manager to browse for the device manually then install them through the Device Manager. To open the Device Manager, right click on My Computer and select Properties. Click on Device Manager. You must have the instrument plugged into the computer and it must remain powered on to show up in the Device Manager. Highlight the CP2102 USB device, then select Update Driver Software. http://partners.spectraprecision.com Page 8
Then select Browse my computer for driver software. Click on the Include subfolders checkbox, then browse to the folder location containing the FOCUS DL-15 drivers, located at the default install location of c:\silabs\mcu\cp210x\windows\. Select OK, then Next. Windows will automatically find and load the appropriate driver, detect the device, then indicate that it s Ready to use. After the driver is successfully selected and loaded, the Device Manager will report that the FOCUS DL-15 as a regular device without the warning symbol. http://partners.spectraprecision.com Page 9
At this point the FOCUS DL-15 driver has been successfully installed. Keep the FOCUS DL-15 unit powered on and connected to the PC for the next step. 3) Locate and determine the correct COM port 1) To successfully communicate and transfer data from the FOCUS DL-15 using DL Data Download and Processor, you need to determine which COM port your computer is using when connected to the FOCUS DL-15 via the mini-usb cable. 2) To determine the correct COM port, power on the FOCUS DL-15 and connect to the computer using the provided mini-usb cable. After the computer has successfully detected that the device is connected, open up Device Manager, and then browse to the Ports (COM & LPT1) section. The COM port should display in line with the Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge. To open the Device Manager, right click on My Computer and select Properties. Click on Device Manager. You can also get to this location by selecting Control Panel, then System. 3) If for some reason the COM resource doesn t display in the Device Manager, you can determine the port by selecting the Advanced button to access the COM Port Number as indicated below. http://partners.spectraprecision.com Page 10
Make a note of the COM port, then exit Device Manager. 4) Transfer data from the FOCUS DL-15 using DL Data Download and Processor Power on the FOCUS DL-15 to connect to the computer using the provided mini-usb cable, then select and launch the DL Data Download and Processor program from either the Desktop shortcut icon, or from the Start Menu entry which can be found under the DL Data Transfer Software directory. Select the Set COM Param option, and then select the correct Port number for your computer as determined in the previous step. Select OK, then select COM > Receive Data to the point that you see the Click OK button int. Don t select OK yet or the program may time out while waiting for the data. http://partners.spectraprecision.com Page 11
Go to the FOCUS DL-15 and select following: 1) From the main menu on the digital level, scroll up or down to select 4. Data Manage then press [ENT]. 2) Scroll down to 5. File Output then press [ENT]. 3) Select the type of data that you want to transfer and select the job file that you want to transfer. Once you have the digital level ready to transfer the data, go back to the DL Data Download and Processor transfer software on the computer and click the OK button. The Transfer software is now ready to receive the data. 4) On the FOCUS DL-15 press [ENT] to send the data to the computer. http://partners.spectraprecision.com Page 12
