Guide for Enrollment in Prerequisite Courses for the Master s Degree in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The East Carolina University Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers post-baccalaureate students (students who have already earned a Bachelor s degree in an area other than SLP/Communication Sciences & Disorders) an opportunity to enroll in undergraduate courses to complete pre-requisite courses for Master s degree programs in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP). This is NOT a degree program. Students must have an undergraduate degree in another field and would like to change career paths and enter the field of SLP. This is NOT a part-time program. The course schedule is designed for all courses to be completed in two semesters (1 academic year). Students will not be accepted part-time with the exception of individuals who do not require completion of all 8 courses. Those students will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Typically there are only spaces for 20 online students and 10 campus students in the pre-requisite courses. Requests are only approved one time each year (March 1 st ) FALL SPRING Phonetics CSDI 3010-601 Speech Science CSDI 3045-601 Lang Dev CSDI 3020-601 Acquis/Dev Phonology/Artic CSDI 3050-601 Anatomy Speech CSDI 3040-601 Intro to Audiology CSDI 4100 601 Neural Processing Speech/Lang CSDI 4440-601 Aural Rehab CSDI 4110 601 The following pre-requisite courses are offered on the following schedule: Minimum Requirements: 1. Bachelor s degree with a GPA of at least 3.0 (out of 4.0) 2. GRE scores showing you have achieved AT LEAST the 30th percentile in the Verbal and Quantitative section of the GRE. GRE scores must be less than 5 years old. **We will not consider requests if these minimum qualifications are not met. Procedures for Receiving Approval to Complete Pre-requisite Courses: 1. Students interested in enrolling in prerequisite courses should email their request to prerequisitescsdi@ecu.edu on March 1 st beginning at 9:00 AM EST each year. 2. NOTE: Requests received before 9:00 AM EST will not be reviewed. 3. In your email, please explain why you want to enroll in the respective courses and your plan(s) for graduate school 4. Requests should include the following: a. A copy of the Non-Degree Seeking Student Prerequisite Course Registration Form with courses of interest listed b. A scanned copy of your undergraduate transcript showing the completion of a bachelor s degree with a GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 c. A scanned copy of your GRE scores showing you have achieved AT LEAST the 30th percentile in the Verbal and Quantitative section of the GRE. 5. There will be NO exceptions for the receipt of the course registration form, transcript and GRE. Requests with missing transcripts or GREs will not be honored. 6. Students who do not meet minimum qualifications (GPA & GRE) will not be considered. 7. Students who have a Master s degree should provide a copy of their undergraduate and master s transcripts.

Procedures if Selected to Complete Pre-requisite Courses: 1. If accepted on or after March 1 st, you will first be directed to apply online to the Graduate School as a non-degree graduate student. The cost is $70. 2. DO NOT apply to the ECU graduate school until you receive an email confirming a seat to complete pre-requisite courses. 3. Do NOT apply to the ECU graduate school if you are not offered a seat. 4. If you apply to the ECU graduate school prior to being approved and we do not offer you a seat, you will not receive a refund. 5. Once you are accepted officially by the university as a non-degree graduate student, then the department will enroll you in courses. 6. Email requests received after March 1 will be placed on the waiting list, along with students who are not chosen on March 1st. 7. If you are NOT accepted to complete pre-requisite courses, all decisions are final. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: If I am offered a seat, when will I take and finish the pre-requisites? If you are approved on March 1 st, you will first be directed to apply online to the Graduate School as a non-degree graduate student. Once you are accepted officially by the university as a non-degree graduate student, the department will enroll you in your requested courses. Non-degree students cannot enroll themselves. There are 4 pre-requisites offered in Fall, and 4 in the Spring. Therefore, if you apply March 1, you would take 4 courses the following Fall, 4 and 4 in Spring. Example: March 1, 2015 application means Fall 2015, Spring 2016. If you need fewer courses, you will complete courses in the same manner. ECU reserves the right to change course sequences and scheduling at any time. Is there cost associated with submitting the request to enroll in pre-requisite courses to the CSD department? No, it s free. If I take the pre-requisites through ECU, am I guaranteed a spot in the master s program? No. All students in the pre-requisite program must apply specifically to the MS program(s) after they have completed most or all of the pre-requisite courses. Our pre-requisites will make you eligible for many graduate programs.

Can any student take the pre-requisite courses online? No. Our online courses are designed for distance education purposes, so you must live at least 75 miles away during the entire time you are enrolled in the pre-requisite courses to continue to take them online. If you live within 75 miles, you must take oncampus classes. Why do I have to take the GRE for the pre-requisites at ECU? We only offer pre-requisite courses to individuals who are likely to be admitted to graduate school. There is huge demand for pre-requisite courses. We want to make sure that we are offering these seats to individuals who are likely to be admitted to graduate school and therefore, having a GRE requirement ensures that we choose students who are most likely to be admitted to a graduate program either at ECU or elsewhere.
