FRIDAY AUGUST 2, SATURDAY AUGUST 3, & SUNDAY AUGUST 4, 2013. PRE-REGISTRATION IS IMPORTANT! Students need to pre-register early in order for us to secure which classes we will be able to run this year. Pre registered students receive discounted tuition, a fire school T shirt, and other items. The following list of classes are being offered at the present time. Depending on the number of registrations will determine which of these classes may be cancelled. We are offering a wide range of classes again this year to meet everyone s needs. The Registration desk will be located at the Eberly Science & Technology Building on the California University of Pa. Campus. FRIDAY EVENING CLASSES (August 2 nd ) Friday evening classes will be held from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. RAPID INTERVENTION TEAM CONCEPTS: This program will show fire department personnel how teams operate and how to integrate a stand-by rescue team at structural fires and other especially hazardous types of incidents into their operations. In today s fire environment, protecting our own is a greater issue than ever! The course content includes an overview of Rapid Intervention operations, and covers successful experiences of departments which have implemented and utilized the concept. PA Fire Academy Local Level Course. Instructor: Scott Conn FIRE OFFICER S WORKSHOP: This presentation is an excellent training Opportunity for fire department officers or even potential officers who want to Develop their leadership skills. Our presenter is a retired Assistant Chief from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire, a member of the adjunct staff at Community College of Allegheny County, and is a PA Fire Academy Local Level Instructor. Among his Topic, he will discuss organizational leadership in the fire service and cover several key topics that fire officers often do not consider, but definitely should! Instructor: Kip Deleonibus FIRE & EMERGENCY RESPONDER REHAB: With the number of duty related heart Attacks and other heat and stress related medical conditions on the rise, we must Assure our responders are receiving proper rehab between work assignments at fires or other strenuous emergencies. Numerous studies have occurred in the Pittsburgh area and around the country, which have led to innovations in responder rehab. This course will show you how to incorporate these techniques into your fire and emergency responses. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (U.P.M.C.) hosts this course and will bring a mobile training facility to use as well as giving a classroom presentation. Instructor: Scott Dolan
CPR & A.E.D.: This course offers both fire E.M.S. personnel to get certified or to Recertify in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and Automatic External Defibrillator use. This is one of the pre-requisite requirements for those wishing to take the Firefighter I certification exam and is a good opportunity for potential candidates to complete the requirement, as well as a good opportunity for personnel who s fire department/fire company responds on first responder incidents or employees of area ambulance services to re-certify. Certification is granted through the American Heart Association upon successful completion. A.H.A. Course. Instructor: Ron Barry N.I.M.S. IS 700: This course is good for both experienced fire officers as well as those new to the fire service, and introduces the student to the National Incident Management System (NIMS); the need for NIMS is, and NIMS compliance. On February 28, 2003, President Bush issued Homeland Security Presidential Directive -5 which directed the Secretary of Homeland Security to develop and administer a National Incident Management System (NIMS). This 4-hour course will explain how To integrate this system into your department s operations. As of July 1, this Course will become a requirement as part of the Essentials of Firefighting program as well. This is a F.E.M.A. course. Instructor: George Hagedorn WEEKEND CLASSES: (Saturday August 3 rd and Sunday August 4 th ) Weekend classes will be held from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm INTRODUCTION TO BASIC FIREMANSHIP: Students will learn basic skills needed to function on the fire ground. Subjects will include fire behavior, safety, ventilation, forcible entry, tools, hose evolutions, ladders, masks, and many other Bread & Butter topics. This is a great primer class for the PA Essentials program or a great Review for anyone in the fire service who wishes to sharpen their basic firefighting Skills! Students will need bunker gear and mask w/spare cylinder. This is a Butler County Community College Course. Instructor: Ron Barry STRUCTURAL BURN SESSION: This course will provide the student with a review of the techniques used in safe firefighting tactics in an actual structural fire (live burn) environment. Emphasis is placed on safety for both interior and exterior operations, and live fire attack will be conducted. Essentials Interior Module or former module of PA Essentials of Firefighting is a pre-requisite. Students will need compliant bunker gear and mask w/spare cylinder. VENTILATION PRACTICES: This course will provide the student with the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively perform ventilation in various situations. The course will build on the basic ventilation concepts learned in the Essentials of Fire fighting course. Topics include: building construction considerations, compartmented versus non-compartmented construction, ventilation in balloon frame constructed buildings and buildings with other void spaces, air movement, ventilation tools and their use, natural and forced ventilation, hydraulic ventilation, negative and positive pressure ventilation, positive pressure attack, and Vent Enter Search (VES). Students will need compliant bunker gear and mask w/spare cylinder. Please provide a copy of pre-requisite upon applying. PA Fire Academy Local Level Course. Instructor: Allen Clark STRUCTURAL FIRE RESCUE: This course will instruct the student in methods of rescue of victims from buildings under fire conditions. Safe operations will be emphasized and students will learn a variety of rescue techniques for a variety of situations. This class is a must for students wanting to enhance their search and rescue capabilities! Essentials Interior Module or other former PA Essentials course is a pre-requisite. Students should be more advanced in their fire ground knowledge and skills to take this course. Students will need compliant bunker gear and mask w/spare cylinder. Instructors: Jim Petruzzi, Dan Barr, and other members of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire TRUCK COMPANY OPERATIONS I: This course will introduce the student to the basic duties of a truck company including hand and power tool operation, search and rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, overhaul, and salvage. Truck company support to the engine company is also covered. Even though your department/ company may not have a ladder truck, you still must perform these vital operations at most fire scenes! This course will teach you how. Students will need compliant bunker gear and mask w/spare cylinder. Please provide a copy of pre-requisite upon applying. PA Fire Academy Local Level Course. Instructor: John Gardell, Sr. ENGINE COMPANY OPERATIONS: This course provides instruction in the duties and responsibilities of an engine company. Topics include: positioning of apparatus, deployment and use of attack and back-up lines, nozzles and appliances, master streams, providing water to protected buildings, and establishing water supply. All fire companies or departments are engaged in Engine Company functions and this course will show you the most effective way to perform these vital fire suppression operations. TRUCK COMPANY OPERATIONS II: This course is designed for the student to apply and refine his/her knowledge of truck company operations, and expand on what was covered in Truck Company I. Topics include: building construction and fire travel, ventilation, forcible entry, search and rescue, master stream supply, apparatus placement, and aerial operations. Students will need compliant bunker gear and mask. Please provide a copy of pre-requisite upon applying. PA Fire Academy Local Level Course. Instructor: Timothy Lewellyn RAPID INTERVENTION CREW EXERCISES: This is a practical exercise course teaching the actual operations performed by Rapid Intervention Teams and the techniques used to complete rescues of downed personnel. Because of today s contents in buildings, construction techniques, and environment; we are seeing more and more hostile fire events, earlier collapses, and other situations that can trap, injure, or kill our own. Come learn the techniques to rescue them. Students will need compliant bunker gear and mask w/spare cylinder. Student should be proficient in interior fire operations, especially in search and rescue techniques. This is a Butler County Community College specialty course. Instructors: Kevin McIlwain and Frank Lemon RESPIRATORY PROTECTION I: This course is designed to familiarize the student with basic respiratory protection and expands the topic of mask use covered in the Essentials program. Topics include: the human respiratory system, effects of toxic atmospheres, and use and limitations as well as emergency procedures involving self contained breathing apparatus type air masks. Hands on drills and scenarios are part of this course. Essentials Interior Module or other former PA Essentials course is a pre-requisite. Student will need compliant bunker gear and mask. Please provide a copy of pre-requisite upon applying. PA Fire Academy Local Level Course. Instructor: Mike Cramer INTRODUCTION TO FIRE OFFICERSHIP: This course is designed for new line officers, both at the chief and company level, or as a refresher for experienced ones. It will give the student a good overview of fire ground officer responsibilities, fire ground operations, personnel issues, and the development of a sound and effective organizational structure, both on the fire ground and in administrative work. A large portion of the class will cover firefighting tactics including tactics for residential fires, commercial building fires, high rise fires, and fire incidents in buildings with active and passive fire protection systems. Construction features will be covered as well, and fires involving legacy versus modern" construction and contents will be compared. The course will also discuss personnel management, and issues faced by today s fire service. PA Fire Academy Local Level Course. Instructor: Scott Conn
INCIDENT SAFETY OFFICER: This course focuses on the duties of the person who finds him/her self in the role of the responding Safety Officer at the scene of an Incident. It is an incident-specific, scene-oriented course designed to teach what a safety officer on the scene needs to know and be able to do, using scenarios to convey instructional points. Students should be experienced company officers, familiar with safety issues, the ICS, Hazmat management, and applicable NFPA standards and federal regulations. In today s ever changing firefighting environment, as well as other incidents occurring such as bombings, terrorist attacks, and the increased use of hazardous materials to name a few, it is more imperative than ever to have a trained and competent Safety Officer used on all emergency incidents! National Fire Academy Course. Instructor: James Bittner PREPARING FOR INITIAL COMPANY OPERATIONS: This is a good course for Company level officers as well as those who wish to become company level officers. Students are prepared as company officers by developing the skills for successfully and safely managing company tactical operations. This course is intended to provide a new officer with skills necessary in preparing for the management of their company involving fireground tactical operations. This course replaced the former Managing Company Tactical Operations Preparation course. This is a National Fire Academy Course. Instructor: Kevin Hogan N.I.M.S. INCIDENT COMMAND FOR THE FIRE SERVICE: Whether an incident is large or small, officers must use a structured command system to effectively manage the incident. This course provides instruction in the command skills necessary to effectively organize, use, deploy, implement, and/or function within a departmental ICS. The course includes guidelines and scenario practice applying ICS. Resource information for setting up a departmental ICS is also provided. This Course was revised in 2005 to be compatible with the training requirements of the National Incident Management System (NIMS). It is a good course for both chief And company officers, as well as those aspiring to become a fire officer. This is a National Fire Academy course. Instructor: TBA ARSON DETECTION FOR THE FIRST RESPONDER: This course covers topics which fire fighting personnel must be familiar within order to facilitate cause and origin determination, and to recognize signs of intentionally set fires. In the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, incendiary and suspicious fires must be reported to the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal, or in some cases, a municipal fire marshal s Division approved by the state police and the Commonwealth. This course will Help fireground officers or designated company personnel recognize signs of these Fires versus accidental fires. This is a National Fire Academy Course. Instructor: Kip Deleonibus
RESPONSE TO ETHANOL EMERGENCIES: * Please note, this is a PA Fire Academy Academy on the Road program. Students will need to fill out the special registration form for AOTR programs and return it to the PA Fire Academy. Ethanol is added to gasoline to reduce tailpipe emissions of carbon monoxide. Its use is growing and expected to increase substantially in coming years. Ethanol presents some challenges where traditional means of fighting a gasoline fire are ineffective. This is an 8 hour course that covers issues including transportation, storage, dispensing and firefighting foam principles for ethanol-blended fuels. (This course will be held Saturday only) Instructor: Steve Lane FOAM FIREFIGHTING, BASIC: This course, developed by National Foam, introduces the firefighting first responder to basic information on the use of foam as a flammable liquid fire suppression agent. The instructors will provide opportunities for hands on application of use of firefighting foams. Student will need compliant bunker gear. (This course will be held Sunday only) PA Fire Academy Course Instructors: Nelson Miller and Steve Lane * Please note, Students who are taking the Response to Ethanol Emergencies Class on Saturday are encouraged to sign up for the Foam Firefighting, Basic class on Sunday. Those only wishing to attend the RTEI class, it is offered free of charge through the Academy on the Road program. BASIC RIGGING FOR ROPE RESCUE: This course is designed for personnel whose duties require training in basic rope rescue knowledge s and skills, but not in rappelling. Students are introduced to rope construction, rope characteristics, rope hardware and various knots and hitches. They will participate in patient packaging and stokes litter handling exercises, and will be trained in practical haul systems and their uses. This course can also be a great review of knots and hitches for those wishing to take the Firefighting I exam! Students will need: List supplied to students upon enrollment. PA Fire Academy Course. Instructor: Stan Marinos ELEVATOR RESCUE: Do you have an elevator(s) in your response district? If you do not yet, rest assured you probably will! With accessibility (A.D.A.) requirements, many new or renovated (remodeled) occupancies will now have elevators installed. elevators are not just for high rises anymore! If occupants are trapped in a stalled or broken elevator, will you know what to do? This course will cover techniques for extricating civilians from elevators. It will also cover things the fire department needs to know involving elevator use at fire scenes. Construction and campus first hand. This is a Butler County Community College Specialty Course. PUMP OPERATIONS I: There is more to it than just getting the engine on scene! You have to know what to do with it when you get it there! This course provides the student with an introduction to basic pump construction and theory as well as operating techniques in this course. Emphasis is placed on getting water to the pump, getting water from the pump for hose streams at the proper flows and pressures, and prevention of common mistakes in pump operations. Both rural pump techniques and urban (hydrant) operations will be covered. Student will need bunker gear. PA Fire Academy Local Level Course. Instructor: Chad Warfield PUMP OPERATIONS II: This course is designed to instruct the student in advanced techniques of operating fire pumps and expand on topics covered in Pump Operations I. Topics covered include: A review of material from Pump I, flows and Pressures, friction loss and other hydraulics, relay pumping, master and elevated Master streams. Student will need bunker gear. PA Fire Academy Local Level Course. Instructor: Bill George EMERGENCY VEHICLE DRIVER TRAINING: This course, originally known as EVOC, was developed by Volunteer Firemen s Insurance Services (VFIS), and provides instruction in techniques of driving emergency vehicles under all conditions. Students will learn the importance of vehicle dynamics, driver selection, condition and preparation on safe vehicle operations. The course includes practice on a driving course laid out to simulate various driving conditions. Also included is a section on service and preventive maintenance. This is not only a good course for fire apparatus operators, but for those who operate Ambulances or other related vehicles as well! PA Fire Academy Local Level Course.
