Fast Track to Innovation (FTI Pilot)

FTI Pilot - What is it? The FTI pilot is 1. the only fully-bottom-up measure in Horizon 2020 promoting 2. close-to-the-market (36 months) innovation activities 3. open to all types of participants

FTI Pilot - What is the idea? innovation TRL9 research fast track funding range 1-3 million demo TRL6 market Launch 36 months Reduce time from idea to market -- last push Increase participation of industry, first-time applicants, SMEs Stimulate private sector investment in R&I

FTI Pilot Key Features One common call, permanently open, 3 cut-offs per year (next 01.12) Time-to-grant (TTG) up to max. 6 months Budget: 200 M for 2015/2016 (100 + 100) ca. 60 projects with average EU contribution of 2M Funds innovation actions (70%), grant up to 3M Future of FTI pilot (beyond 2016) only decided after full evaluation

FTI Pilot Industry Involvement Industry-intensive consortia from EU or Associated Countries meaning: Either 2 out of 3-4 partners are industry (= private for profit) Or 3 out of 5 partners are private for profit And/or 60% of the budget (= total estimated eligible costs) is to be allocated to consortium partner(s) from industry Subcontractors allowed but the core must be in the partners SMEs and first-time industry applicants particularly welcome

FTI Pilot Evaluation process Panel of four independent experts Evaluation summary report (arithmetic average of scores) with a short feedback allowing the applicant to understand what can be improved in the proposal Thresholds: overall 12/15; score for "Impact": 4/5 or higher 3 criteria: Possible economic impact; Excellence in innovation; Implementation

FTI Pilot examples of main weaknesses identified during the evaluation The expected impact on partners' growth and innovation capacity are insufficiency described; Market and competition analysis are weak and limited; Financing plan to reach the market and expand the commercialization capacity is not discussed in detail; The commercialization activities are not presented to demonstrate how they intend to involve key stakeholders on the buy side; The financial aspects are underestimated within the review of risks; Management structure is assessed as generic; Lack of details in the description of deliverables and in risk mitigation plans.
