The campaign, known as Target 20 was an outstanding success and saw expressions of interest from over 40 potential new volunteers. In 2008 Mr Layton was appointed as one of the first Community Paramedic in Western Australia. This role was developed in many ways around the successes that he had already achieved in rebuilding the Kununurra St John Ambulance Sub-Centre into the vibrant centre that it is today with over 40 active and highly motivated volunteers. Both he and another Community Paramedic working In Newman have gone above and beyond their normal duties in developing the Community Paramedic role: a role that goes considerably beyond the normal ambulance paramedic duties. Outside the Centre he has ensured that radio procedure training for all new ambulance officers and paramedics has been delivered across South Australia to meet the requirements of the South Australian Government Radio Network. In achieving this, he has spent significant time acting in the roles of Team Leader and Training Manager and has excelled in both roles, displaying outstanding leadership. As an emergency medical dispatcher, Mr Scheurich has received many commendations for outstanding service delivery to medical and trauma incidents, displaying the ability to pre-empt the requirements of an incident and to respond with additional resources, such as retrieval teams, to support crews in rural and remote South Australia. This has undoubtedly contributed to improved patient outcomes on many occasions. Mr Scheurich is also currently playing a significant role as a subject matter expert in the South Australian Computer Aided Dispatch project which will see the replacement of the existing systems in police, fire and ambulance operation centres.
