New South Wales Mr Graeme Ralph FIELD, Pennant Hills NSW 2120 Mr Field joined the Ambulance Service of NSW in 1979 and was initially stationed at St Ives as a paramedic. During the 1990s in his role of Media Manager, Mr Field was the catalyst for the Service achieving a high profile with various media outlets in New South Wales, including print and electronic. Through his outstanding dedication, Mr Field was able to establish an excellent rapport with the media that afforded the Service appropriate coverage and recognition. This, in turn, educated the community on the vital role performed by the Service s paramedics. In his current role of Manager, Aeromedical and Medical Retrieval Services, Mr Field has been an active participant in the rotary and fixed wing contracts, allowing the organisation to have a state of the art retrieval system that the community of New South Wales can feel justifiably proud. Mr Graeme Trevor WILLIS, Wagga Wagga NSW 2650 Mr Willis has been instrumental in the establishment of procedures that ensure fair and equitable investigation processes for those paramedics within the Ambulance Service of NSW who become subject to investigation by the Professional Standards and Conduct Unit. Mr Willis is known for his dedication and commitment to professionalism in the preparation of reports and documentation. He is consistently thorough, and his recommendations are well considered and researched. He is often used as a source of organisational procedural fairness and discipline in the progression of investigations, and his counsel is regularly sought by senior managers on the preferred manner and/or actions to be taken to handle complicated matters. Mr Willis has served the Service and the community of New South Wales with distinction. Victoria Mr John Stewart DAVIS, Birregurra Vic 3242 Mr Davis is a Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance Paramedic with Ambulance Victoria and has made an outstanding contribution to the development and provision of ambulance services in both rural and metropolitan Victoria, particularly through the development of the first rural Community Emergency Response Team in Lavers Hill and the development of a team of Ambulance Community Officers at Colac to support primary response in the community. Many team members have progressed to become paramedics. Mr Davis has worked tirelessly to share his knowledge, volunteering significant time to train members of the community and other emergency service organisations, Ambulance Victoria volunteers, paramedics and other health professionals. He has served Ambulance Victoria and the community with distinction. 348
Mr Terry HOUGE, 55 Genoa Road, Mallacoota Vic 3892 Mr Houge is the Paramedic Community Support Coordinator in Mallacoota and has made an outstanding contribution to the development and provision of ambulance and emergency health services in Victoria. In particular, through exceptional creativity, motivation, leadership and innovation, he has implemented service improvements that have impacted positively on Ambulance Victoria's ability to provide service, in terms of operations and of clinical care delivery. Mr Houge played an integral part in the development of a new system providing emergency care and transport that has directly influenced the development of aquatic response by paramedics throughout Victoria. Mr Houge has served Ambulance Victoria and the community with distinction. Mr John Bernard McKENZIE, Camperdown Vic 3260 Mr McKenzie has made an outstanding contribution to the development and provision of ambulance services in regional Victoria. As the Team Manager Camperdown South West Ambulance Victoria In particular he has shown exceptional commitment to volunteer education. As the Team Manager Camperdown South West Ambulance Victoria he has assisted new graduates during their clinical induction, has supported the development of university students during their programs, and has contributed greatly to the development and support of the Camperdown Auxiliary which contributes significant funds to support the provision of ambulance services in the local community. Mr McKenzie has served Ambulance Victoria and the community in regional Victoria with distinction. Ms Casey Michelle NUNN, Craigieburn Vic 3064 Ms Nunn is the Team Leader of the Craigieburn Community Emergency Response Team with Ambulance Victoria and has made an outstanding contribution to the development and provision of volunteerism for the Craigieburn community. In particular she has developed the Craigieburn and District Community Emergency Response Team into a cohesive and effective group to provide a medical emergency response when needed. This has required the investment of significant personal time and effort by Ms Nunn. In addition, she delivers exceptional service training in first aid to young mothers and children, supports several voluntary organisations including the Hume Men's Shed project, Craigieburn Diabetes Support Group, and the Craigieburn Community Renewal Group. Ms Nunn serves Ambulance Victoria and her local community with distinction. 349
Mr Neil Vincent TREASE, 37 Baromi Road, Mirboo North Vic 3871 Mr Trease is a volunteer Ambulance Community Officer and has provided exceptional service to Ambulance Victoria and his community. This service includes his volunteer work during the January and February 2009 bushfires, particularly the Black Saturday fires; providing education for other Ambulance Community Officers; providing awareness training and education of ambulance services to community groups, including teaching children when and how to call '000' and how to provide first aid; the rostering of all Mirboo North volunteers; and coordinating working bees, fundraising activities and recruitment drives at a range of local events. Mr Trease has served Ambulance Victoria and his local community with distinction Queensland Mr Rodney Samuel SHEATHER, Bentley Park Qld 4869 Mr Sheather has had a long and distinguished ambulance career, commencing service with the (then) Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade as an Honorary Ambulance Officer in 1975. This was followed by his permanent appointment in Cloncurry in 1977. Following extensive service as a front line Ambulance Officer, Mr Sheather has held a number of operational management and management support positions including Superintendant, Human Resource Management and Education, Area Manager and Regional Manager Staff Development in the Queensland Ambulance Service Central Region. He was appointed to his current position of Regional Director Operations in 2008. Of particular note is Mr Sheather's contribution to the design of an enhanced operational supervision model and supporting regional structures for the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) following the QAS Audit undertaken by Queensland Treasury in 2007. He has further demonstrated an outstanding commitment to his profession through his long and sustained participation with the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals, in which he has held several executive positions including Chair of the Queensland Chapter. Mr Sheather has served the QAS and the community of Queensland with distinction for many years. 350
Ms Deanne Maree TAYLOR-DUTTON, Brassall Qld 4305 Ms Taylor-Dutton has had a distinguished ambulance career, commencing service as a Student Ambulance Officer with the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) in 1995. Ms Taylor-Dutton has performed a broad range of ambulance duties with distinction and continues to influence the lives of the patients within Toowoomba and the communities of the South Western Region. Ms Taylor-Dutton has held several management positions including Officer-in-Charge, Area Director and roles supporting the central office executive of the QAS. Of particular note is her support and contribution to the Service's strategic approach to the development of its equipment and vehicle fleet during her appointment as the Senior Project Officer supporting the QAS State-wide Vehicle and Equipment Committee. In February 2008, Ms Taylor-Dutton was appointed as Area Director followed by her appointment as Regional Director Operations, South Western Region in January 2009, and continually displays outstanding leadership, guidance and professionalism. Ms Taylor-Dutton has served the QAS and the community of Queensland with distinction for many years. Mr Peter John WARRENER, 103 Stewart Street, North Rockhampton Qld 4701 Mr Warrener's distinguished ambulance career began when he joined the (then) Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade in 1984, serving in Rockhampton where he performed a broad range of ambulance duties with distinction. Forever a very committed paramedic, he sought to care for the sick and injured at all times and always promoted a very high standard of pre-hospital emergency care. Mr Warrener made the transition to ambulance management roles with similar commitment and with a continued focus on community service. He has held appointments as Officer-in-Charge, Area Manager, Area Director, and Regional Director Operations, and was appointed to his current position of Assistant Commissioner in November 2009. Mr Warrener continually displays outstanding leadership, guidance and professionalism. He remains an exceptional role model for staff and managers, and serves the Queensland Ambulance Service and the community of Queensland with distinction. 351
Western Australia Mr Christopher David HOPKINS, Newman WA 6753 Mr Hopkins joined St John Ambulance in Western Australia in 2001 as a student ambulance officer in Perth prior to accepting an Ambulance Officer position in Kalgoorlie. Almost from day one Mr Hopkins received numerous commendations from members of the general public, schools and the Kalgoorlie Fire and Emergency Services for his outstanding personal drive and professionalism. Mr Hopkins has worked in Newman, Mandurah and several metropolitan depots where he enjoyed an excellent working relationship with his peers due to his calm, relaxed and professional approach to his responsibilities. He was one of the first Community Paramedics appointed in Western Australia, and he has played a significant part in not only raising the quality and responsiveness of the ambulance service in Newman where he is based but also developing the role of a community paramedic. This has required considerable passion and commitment in extending himself considerably beyond the duties normally expected of an ambulance paramedic. His passion and commitment has seen the development of the community paramedic role in a way that will benefit the Western Australian community for many years to come. Mr Hopkins has served the community of Western Australia with distinction. Mr Brian William KEDING, 190 Gairdner South Road, Gairdner WA 6337 Mr Keding has served his local community with distinction for many years. He has served as a volunteer with St John Ambulance in Western Australia since 1979 at the Jerramungup Sub-Centre. In addition to his role of volunteer ambulance officer, since 1988 he has been a First Aid Trainer and the Sub-Centre Trainer training volunteer ambulance officers in ambulance care as well as the general community in first aid. Since joining St John Ambulance, Mr Keding has not only taken on the normal roles within a St John Ambulance Sub-Centre but also shown an incredible commitment to enhancing the level of health services provided within his community. He has worked tirelessly and has been instrumental in establishing and developing other Sub-Centres at Wellstead, Gairdner and Bremer Bay. Mr Keding's leadership, foresight, determination: and passion are exceptional and his contribution to Jerramungup and surrounding areas has been significant. Without his dedication and persistence over the years the Jerramungup Sub-Centre would not be the outstanding centre that it is today and the Wellstead, Gairdner and Bremer Bay Sub-Centres would not have local ambulance services. Awards/recognition include: Appointed a Member of the Venerable Order of St. John, 2010. 352
Mr John Charles LAYTON, 52 Barringtonia Avenue, Kununurra WA 6743 Mr Layton is a Community Paramedic with St John Ambulance in Western Australia since 1991, and during the early years of his career he: worked primarily in the metropolitan area with temporary relief postings in Mandurah, Collie and Norseman. In 2007 while working in the Ambulance Training Centre, Mr Layton accepted a request by the organisation to go to Kununurra and Wyndham to assist in supporting the volunteers in these locations. The situation in Kununurra was critical with very few volunteers to provide an ambulance service. Mr Layton played the lead role in a recruitment campaign built around completely reinvigorating the centre. The campaign, known as Target 20 was an outstanding success and saw expressions of interest from over 40 potential new volunteers. In 2008 Mr Layton was appointed as one of the first Community Paramedic in Western Australia. This role was developed in many ways around the successes that he had already achieved in rebuilding the Kununurra St John Ambulance Sub-Centre into the vibrant centre that it is today with over 40 active and highly motivated volunteers. Both he and another Community Paramedic working In Newman have gone above and beyond their normal duties in developing the Community Paramedic role: a role that goes considerably beyond the normal ambulance paramedic duties. Mr Layton has played a major part in developing this expanded role and has made a very major contribution to the development of ambulance services in Western Australia. Mr Layton has served his community with distinction. South Australia Mr Dieter Bruce SCHEURICH, 7 Chasselas Avenue, Wynn Vale SA 5127 Mr Scheurich began his distinguished ambulance career as a St John Ambulance cadet in 1968. In 1988, he commenced full-time employment with the South Australian Ambulance Service (SAAS) as an Ambulance Officer and as an emergency medical dispatcher in the Emergency Operations Centre. Mr Scheurich has shown exceptional dedication to the ongoing education and support of staff in the Centre. He has contributed to the development and delivery of training and education packages to meet national qualification requirements for new and current staff. Outside the Centre he has ensured that radio procedure training for all new ambulance officers and paramedics has been delivered across South Australia to meet the requirements of the South Australian Government Radio Network. In achieving this, he has spent significant time acting in the roles of Team Leader and Training Manager and has excelled in both roles, displaying outstanding leadership. As an emergency medical dispatcher, Mr Scheurich has received many commendations for outstanding service delivery to medical and trauma incidents, displaying the ability to pre-empt the requirements of an incident and to respond with additional resources, such as retrieval teams, to support crews in rural and remote South Australia. This has undoubtedly contributed to improved patient outcomes on many occasions. Mr Scheurich is also currently playing a significant role as a subject matter expert in the South Australian Computer Aided Dispatch project which will see the replacement of the existing systems in police, fire and ambulance operation centres. He has contributed greatly to the development of the requirements for the new system which promises to be one of the most significant technology changes the SAAS has undertaken. Additionally he has represented the SAAS on the State Rescue Helicopter Committee and Royal Flying Doctor Service Retrieval Committee. Mr Scheurich has served the SAAS and the community of South Australia with distinction for many years. 353
Mr John TRELOAR, PO Box 106, Cummins SA 5631 Mr Treloar has been a very active and involved member of the South Australian Ambulance Service (SAAS) volunteer team at Cummins for over 13 years. During this time, he has performed the role of Training Officer and has been the Volunteer Team Leader since 2008. He is a highly respected and very capable Team Leader and Ambulance Officer and has provided excellent support and mentorship to his team. Mr Treloar has excelled as a leader both within his community and in his various roles with SAAS. He is a very proactive member who consistently represents SAAS at the highest level within the community of Cummins and also the wider district of Lower Eyre Peninsula, Mr Treloar's positive and inclusive approach to Ambulance Service delivery has had a significant impact on both recruitment and retention of volunteers, not only in Cummins, but also throughout the region. Mr Treloar has been a wonderful role model for SAAS and his experience and wisdom is widely sought from both volunteers and SAAS management alike. Mr Treloar has been an extremely active member of various committees and boards including inter alia Deputy Chairman of the Lower Eyre Peninsula Zone Coordinating Committee; member and Deputy Chairman of the Country Ambulance Service Advisory Committee; member of the Ambulance Board; Presiding Member of the Zone Ambulance Coordinating Committee (West Zone). His involvement on these committees has afforded him the opportunity to represent with professionalism and integrity the interest of volunteers across South Australia at the highest level. Mr Treloar has served the SAAS and the community of South Australia with distinction. 354
