MISSION To promote, coordinate and implement applied research initiatives to improve: climate risk management and adaptation, the understanding of climate variability and change and climate early warning systems in order to increase resilience of most vulnerable communities

Support to regional networks.

COF VI, Armenia Colombia 2006 COF X, Quito Ecuador 2010 COF IV, Guayaquil Ecuador 2004 COF VIII, Caracas Venezuela, 2008 COF IX, Cuzco Perú 2009 COF V, Bolivia La Paz 2007 The COF-WCSA discuss about the standardized procedure to process climate information from 430 meteorological stations and shown it into a regional map. Opportunity to identify needs in each country. Identify the potential benefits of a regional collective action. Identify key partners. Opportunity to review and coordinate further actions. CLIMATE OUTLOOK FORUM WCSA COF XI, Santiago Chile 2011 COF V, Santiago Chile 2005 Final reports and results of the Climate Forum WCSA can be downloaded from 2003 to date

Evolution of the Seasonal Forecast for Western South America

The Seasonal Forecast for Western South America, is coordinated by CIIFEN every month with the NMHSs of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. Since 2011, Uruguay and Argentina joined this regional product. CLIMATE PRODUCTS The Seasonal Forecast is then distributed every month to more than 6,600 key users along the region.

WMO REGIONAL CLIMATE CENTER CIIFEN was convened as a WMO Regional Climate Center for the west of South America by the PRs in April 2011. During 2012 the pilot phase will start. The RCC will provide data and information to the NMHSs during the implementation phase.

Emerging Opportunities for the Caribbean region To understand the potential oceanographic changes in the Caribbean region requires a coordinated effort. Local scientists must be identified and integrated in a regional network. ClIFEN is willing to contribute to integrate scientists from the Caribbean region and push forward a oceanographic research plan. We would like to coordinate these efforts with ITCP and OGS as European partners and explore together funding opportunities. We hope, this workshop be just the first step for a long term Action Plan for the Caribbean region.
