Each year, Hobsons seeks to collect data from all Business Schools offering an MBA program within Australia via a survey. Once the data has been collected, it is summarised and placed on the Hobsons website allowing comparisons to be made between MBA programs and for prospective students to get a better understanding of various MBA programs available to them. Where a Business School authorises it, some of the data provided is also made available to the Graduate Management Association of Australia where it is then used to prepare the Index of the Attractiveness of Australian MBA programs the GMAA 5 Star Ranking. This document has been prepared to assist Business Schools in completing the Hobsons survey, particularly in relation to questions which are then used by the GMAA. It provides instructions on how Business Schools should answer the questions and provide definitions to help ensure that all Business Schools are answering the questions in the same way. This is the first time a document such as this has been provided to assist Business Schools in completing the questionnaire. It has been developed because Hobsons and the GMAA are regularly asked to clarify questions by the Business Schools as they are completing the survey. It is hoped that this document will answer many of those questions and make the process of completing the survey much simpler. The notes in this document are in the same order as the questionnaire, but not every question in the survey will have explanatory notes. It is expected that additional notes will be included in this document over time as questions are added to the survey or people completing the questionnaire seek clarification on certain questions. This document is broken down into sections with one section for each screen in the online survey. At the beginning of each screen section are the actual questions being asked on that particular screen. The questions appear in orange and are then followed by the explanatory notes for the questions on the screen. There is also a list of all question at the end of this document. Comments or suggestions on how this document could be improved would be welcomed. Guidelines for Completing the Hobsons On-Line MBA Survey ver 24-6-15 Page 1 of 21 14 March 2015

General instructions for using the online survey facility The Hobsons online survey has been developed to enable Business Schools to provide details about their MBA program(s). The first group of screens (2 through 11) captures information about the Business School / faculty, while the second group of screens (13 through 31) are used to capture information about a specific MBA program. If a Business School is offering multiple MBA programs, the second group of screens can be repeated to enable information about each program to be entered. Information relating to 5 separate MBA programs can be entered into the survey. The information sought for each program will be exactly the same. Some important information to be aware of, before commencing the electronic survey:- You must gather all of the information you wish to submit and have it on hand prior to commencing the electronic survey. Once you commence the survey, you cannot leave until the survey is complete You will not be able to resume the survey from where you left off. Data that you will need on hand to complete the survey is as follows:- If you are interested in what data was submitted to Hobsons by your business school last year please get in touch. If you have any questions about the data referenced in the survey, please get in touch before commencing the survey. Once all information is entered on a particular screen, click on the Next button at the bottom of the screen to move to the next screen. There is no provision to move backwards to a previous screen. Do not use the browser back arrow, on any browser. While it may appear that it has gone back one screen allowing you to change an entry and then carry on with the survey, the results can be unpredictable and could result in incorrect information being written to the server. It is not possible to jump through the survey to a specific screen. You must start at the first screen and work your way through the survey, one screen at a time. You also cannot complete half of the survey, exit and return later and pick up where you left off and complete the survey. Screen 1 Introduction to the Good Universities Guide to MBAs in 2015 Screen 2 - Nominating your Business School Select your Business School from the list displayed. Included in this screen is a test school which can be used as a trial run to enable Business Schools to see the screens and understand what information is required for each screen. Nothing entered under school SAMPLE SURVEY will be saved or used in any way. Schools are free to this test option at any time. Screen 3 - Beginning of the faculty/business School section of the survey The first group of screens (4 through 11) relate to information about the faculty or the Business School. Screen 4 - Current accreditations Is your business school or the MBA program(s) offered by your school currently accredited by any of the following organisations? AACSB AMBA EPAS (MBA) EQUIS Not currently accredited by any organisations Other, please specify Currently the accreditations that are assessed for the GMAA 5 Star Rating are:- Faculty specific AACSB EQUIS MBA program specific EPAS (MBA) AMBA. The accreditations listed above are the only ones that will be assessed in 2015, but this may change in future years if additional accreditations are deemed important and worthy of obtaining. Accreditations must be current. If an organisation had been awarded any accreditation (faculty specific or MBA program specific) but that accreditation had been withdrawn or not renewed, then the organisation should not answer that they currently have that accreditation. If an organisation has received informal advice that the process is complete and that they have been successful, that would not be sufficient for them to claim that they have received Guidelines for Completing the Hobsons On-Line MBA Survey ver 24-6-15 Page 4 of 21 14 March 2015
accreditation. To be able to claim that they have one of the four listed accreditations, they must have received formal notification from the accreditation agency that they have been awarded that accreditation. If an organisation has been awarded accreditation and that accreditation is still current and the organisation is also currently working with the accreditation agency to renew that accreditation, then the organisation should answer this question YES. The organisation should then answer the following question, currently applying for accreditation, as NO because a school can receive points if they have accreditation, or if they are in the process of applying for that accreditation, but they cannot claim points for both at the same time. Screen 5 - Accreditation process in progress Is your business school or the MBA program(s) offered by your school currently undergoing accreditation by any of the following? AACSB AMBA EQUIS EPAS (MBA) Other, please specify Currently not undergoing any accreditation For an organisation to claim it is currently applying for accreditation, the Business School must have formally engaged with the accreditation agency and the two organisations must be currently working through the accreditation process. The organisation cannot say YES to this question if they currently have that accreditation, but are currently in the process of trying to renew that accreditation. See the last paragraph for Screen 4. If the Business School had made the decision to seek accreditation, but had not yet contacted the accreditation agency to begin the process, then it would not be able to claim it is currently applying for accreditation. Screen 6 - Corporate links Please upload your corporate links spreadsheet Information about links between the Business School and industry/business organisations should be maintained in a spreadsheet. A spreadsheet template that can be used to record this information will be provided to all Business Schools by Hobsons. The up to date spreadsheet can then be up loaded to the survey via this screen. Please do not alter the format of the spreadsheet. Guidelines for Completing the Hobsons On-Line MBA Survey ver 24-6-15 Page 5 of 21 14 March 2015
Formal research partner means Any organisation that enters into a formal arrangement with the University where the University undertakes research and the organisation provides some/all of the funding (and perhaps some staff) for said research and is then entitled to use the findings of the research within their business. If an organisation provides a grant and the University is free to use that money for any purpose it sees fit, that organisation would not be considered a research partner. Donated more than $5,000 - the donation must have been directed specifically at the Business School and not a general donation to the University. With regards to a donation, the process must be complete and the agreement between the Business School and the other party be signed and the money actually received by the organisation in the previous calendar year. Represented on Governing board OR Advisory board - does this organisation sit on a governing board at your Business School which is responsible for administering your MBA program(s) OR on an advisory board for any subject delivered in the MBA programs(s). Sponsors a lectureship - the lectureship must be in the area of postgraduate business studies Sponsors a chair - the chair must be in the area of postgraduate business studies With regards to sponsoring a chair or a lectureship, the process must be complete and the agreement between the Business School and the other party must have been signed in the previous calendar year. The usual way that a sponsorship would work is that the outside organisation would provide a financial consideration, but as an alternative, it could provide goods or services to the Business School to the same value. Internships means A formally signed arrangement between the Business School and an external organisation whereby the student works with the organisation over a period of the subject being undertaken on a consultancy type role and produces a business style report which the business can use and is assessed by the lecturer in consultation with the business. Screen 7 - Overseas links Please upload your overseas links spreadsheet Information about links between the Business School and overseas Business Schools offering MBAs with whom you have a student exchange program should be maintained in a spreadsheet. The aim of this question is to determine the total cost of the MBA, calculated in a consistent way to enable a comparison to be made between schools, rather than determining a cost that a student is likely to actually pay. Most MBA programs are spread over at least two years, even if undertaken on a full-time basis. If it is being undertaken on a part-time basis, then it could be spread over several years. As the cost of individual subjects usually increase each year, it is not possible to determine the total cost of a program at the start of a year as the individual subject cost for the following years is not known. Guidelines for Completing the Hobsons On-Line MBA Survey ver 24-6-15 Page 10 of 21 14 March 2015
By calculating the total cost of the degree (e.g. 16 subjects @ $3,000 = $48,000) using only this year s cost per subject we can compare the results from all schools. Total tuition costs for domestic students Assuming a student was starting their MBA this year, what would be the total cost of undertaking the MBA (over the following 12-24 months) if it was being taken on a full-time basis, using only the 2015 cost per subject for domestic students. Total tuition costs for international students Assuming a student was starting their MBA this year, what would be the total cost of undertaking the MBA (over the following 12-24 months) if it was being taken on a full-time basis, using only the 2015 cost per subject for international students.
