Services include daily living skill training, employment, recreation, transportation, etc. The agency provides a wide range of housing options including housing that is supervised 24/7, as well as independent and supportive housing. To provide comprehensive support services to individuals with special needs to enable them to reach their highest level of independence and integration in the community. Alternatives philosophy is based on a person-centered approach. This means developing a program around the specific needs of an individual rather than offering a generic group of services to a large number of people. 4

Volunteer screening includes an interview, a reference check, training and a home visit. The child intake includes a parent and child interview and a school inquiry. The case management staff supports and supervises matches. School-Based Program Matches elementary school students to professionally volunteers. The volunteers serve as friends and role models, helping the students gain greater self confidence. A partnership is developed with a local business. The employees spend one lunch hour per week with a student at school helping with class work, playing a board game and getting to know each other. Volunteer screening includes an interview, a reference check and training. The student intake includes parent permission, a teacher referral and a student interview. The case management staff supports and supervises matches. Currently there are school-based programs in Green Street, Andover-Morris and White Township Schools. 10

Children s workshops, teacher in-service training and parent workshops are conducted by trained CAP facilitators. Independent Living Program is a fully supervised independent living situation which allows the client to experience reintegration into the community at an individualized pace. Clients reside in apartments and are responsible for sharing all aspects of maintaining their home. Services include independent life skills instruction; employment procurement, time management; counseling services; information and referral; crisis intervention; case management and coordination and aftercare.
