E328 Project Management (4 Modular Credits) This document addresses the content related abilities, with reference to the module. Abilities of thinking, learning, problem solving, team work, communication, debating and defending are addressed by the system wide curricular practices at the institute. Module Synopsis This module is to equip students with essential skills in defining, planning, executing, controlling and closing a project to achieve the project objectives using the major project management processes, tools, and techniques. Topics include project planning, project scheduling, cost estimation and budgeting, resource allocation, monitoring and control, and risk management. Effective teamwork, communication, conflict management as well as the desired characteristics of a successful project manager is also covered. This module will train students on various qualitative and quantitative project management skills, concepts and techniques, to the extent expected of all who have received higher education leading to a diploma or a degree. Module Learning Outcomes Throughout the course, students will learn: Identify characteristics of a project. Describe the four major phases of a project life cycle. Identify the stakeholders of a project and how their level of interest and influence can affect the outcome of the project. Identify the use of IT tools in project management. Describe the different types of organizational structure, their characteristics and strengths and weaknesses. Determine the appropriate organizational structure for the project team. Identify the financial and non-financial methods in selecting a project Create a scoring model for project selection Formulate project objective statements in a Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Result-oriented and Time-bound (SMART) manner Develop a Work-Breakdown-Structure to scope a project Develop a Responsibility Assignment Matrix to assign individuals their roles Create project schedule in a Gantt Chart Create project schedule using Activity-on-Node or Activity-on-Arc diagram Identify critical activities using Critical Path Analysis Perform Project Evaluation & Review Technique (PERT) analysis to determine project duration and account for uncertainty in activity durations (probabilistic). Carry out scheduling of activities when resources required to carry out those activities are limited. Schedule activities to achieve smooth resource usage resource leveling Describe the steps of project risk management process Quantify risks using Probability-Impact (PI) score Suggest some risk handling strategies Measure project progress and control cost using Earned Value Approach To manage procurement, tendering, evaluation and awarding of contract process.
Monitor project for its quality, according to standards BS ISO 10006:2003 Describe the processes in a Project Audit and know when to conduct one. Describe the characteristics of a high-performance team State some team building activities Identify the different communication modes and which to apply under different circumstances Develop a Project Communication Plan for effective communication Identify and describe the appropriate ways to resolve conflicts Apply Principled Negotiation Approach to achieve win-win solution Describe the roles and responsibilities of a Project Manager and his/ her desirable characteristics Identify which leadership style to be used under specific situations of decision-making Identify the factors (reasons) in closing a project Describe the necessary activities in closing a project. Module Syllabus This module aims to equip students with skills, concepts and techniques to effectively manage project activities. Its emphasis is on a holistic management approach to implement broad Project Management principles and best practices. By the end of the module, students should be able to: 1. Identify project characteristics and the need for project management. 2. Carry out basic project planning tasks such as definition, scoping, scheduling and resource allocation. 3. Control project cost and risk and implement Project Quality Management 4. Apply leadership skills to lead an effective team and resolve conflicts
