Alfredo Alfredo (Al) Ramirez With UL LLC since 1989. Al is UL LLC s Global Regulatory Services Manager and primarily works with code authorities across the globe. His group assists Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), domestically and internationally, in resolving product acceptance issues and potential conflicts between UL requirements and installation codes, among other things. Mr. Ramirez s previous UL assignments in conformity systems were both domestic and international (Asia, Europe and Latin America) in scope. His primary international focus has been in Asia China, Hong Kong and Taiwan and Latin America Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, and Mexico, in particular. His product certification portfolio includes gasoline dispensing and storage equipment, industrial control equipment, fire suppression equipment, fire operation equipment, and hazardous location equipment. Mr. Ramirez is the current Chair of NFPA 30A (Motor Fuel Dispensing Facilities and Repair Garages) and member of several Technical Committees of NFPA 30 (Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code). He has also served on Code Committees for NFPA 1 (Uniform Fire Code), and 70 (National Electrical Code - CMP 1). Mr. Ramirez obtained his BSEE degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1989.

Jim Jim Dolan retired from the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety in 1998 after completing 25 years in the fire service. He was appointed Deputy Director of the Division in 1994 after serving as the first Director [State Fire Marshal] of the Division when it was created in 1993. As Deputy Director he served as the Chief Operations Officer of the Division, responsible for day-to-day operations. He was charged with administering and enforcing New Jersey s Uniform Fire Code. Jim joined NFPA in 2001 as regional manager, fire code office. He is responsible for expanding field outreach and support for NFPA s various fire codes by working with state and local officials and associations, as well as representing NFPA at code hearings and legislative sessions. He most recently served as fire service coordinator for BOCA International, where he promoted the adoption of codes and served as a liaison between the organization and members of the fire service community.

Joe Joe Versteeg is a Connecticut based fire protection consultant specializing in building code, life safety code and accessibility compliance, seminar development and training, plans review, building surveys, litigation and evacuation planning. Formerly the Chief of the Technical Services Section for the Connecticut State Fire Marshal s Office, before retiring in 1996; he is a certified Fire Marshal and Building Official, and member of numerous Technical Committees for the National Fire Protection Association in addition to being the chairperson for the Technical Committee on Building Construction within NFPA 5000, Building Construction and Safety Code, NFPA 220 Standard on Building Construction Types, NFPA 221 Standard on Fire Walls and Fore Barrier Walls, and NFPA 101A Guide on Alternative Approaches to Life Safety. Joe is also coauthor of the National Fire Protection Association s Performing Plan Reviews for Compliance with the Life Safety Code and contributing author to the National Fire Protection Association s Fire Prevention Code Handbook and Fire and Life Safety Inspection Manual.

Steve Steve Leyton is President of Protection Design & Consulting in San Diego, CA. He began his career in 1981 on the design/build side of fire sprinkler industry and founded PD&C in1995, to focus on Architectural as well as Contractor clients. His professional affiliations include membership in NFPA, International Code Council (ICC), American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA), National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA), California Fire Prevention Officers Northern and Southern Sections, and the San Diego Fire Protection Association. He is a member of the NFPA14 and NFPA 13D/13R Technical Committees and served as Chair of the installation committee for the California State Fire Marshal s 2009 Residential Sprinkler Code Adoption Task Group and as Co-Chair of the ICC Ad-Hoc Committee on Residential Fire Sprinklers. Over the course of his career, Steve has worked on all manner of residential, commercial/ industrial, institutional and high-rise projects in the United States, Mexico and Asia.

Wayne Wayne G. Carson is a consulting fire protection engineer with a BS in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland and is a registered professional engineer in several states. He has over 35 years experience in fire protection engineering. He is president of Carson Associates Inc, a fire protection engineering and code consulting firm in Warrenton, Virginia. Mr. Carson is active in code development serving on various national code development committees since 1977. He serves on the NFPA Safety to Life Committee that is responsible for NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, is chairperson of the Technical Committee on Fundamentals of NFPA 101, and is former secretary for NFPA 5000, the NFPA Building Construction and Safety Code. Mr. Carson has over 30 years experience instructing fire protection and safety code seminars including former instructor for the OSHA Training Institute and for the National Fire Protection Association Life Safety Code seminars.

Mr. Carson has co-authored three books all published by the National Fire Protection Association; Fire Protection Systems, Inspection, Testing and Maintenance in its fourth edition, 2013, Safety Manager s Guide to Fire Protection, 2004, and Performing Plan Reviews for Life Safety Code Compliance, 2012. Among several articles in professional journals, Mr. Carson writes a regular column in the NFPA Journal entitled In Compliance. Mr. Carson has received two awards from the National Fire Protection Association for his work on national code writing committees; the Committee Service Award in 1998 and the Standards Medal in 2003. 11. -

William William Koffel P.E., FSFPE, is President of Koffel Associates, a fire protection and life safety engineering design and consulting firm, recognized as an expert in the fire protection and life safety aspects of codes and standards. Headquartered in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area in the USA, the firm provides consulting; engineering design & construction administration; codes & standards development; seminar development & training; product testing & evaluation / representation; and litigation support to public and private clients worldwide. William is active in the development process of the industry s governing codes, standards and design guidelines including International Code Council (ICC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and Underwriters Laboratory (UL). A former code official with the Maryland State Fire Marshal s Office, he is a Past President of the SFPE.
