Orientation Week Note: All points under are priority wise 1. Student card/tram ticket It is recommended that students first collect their Student ID with Semesterticket for public transport. Using this ticket one can travel in trams, busses and trains in Kassel and to cities mentioned at the rear of semester ticket. 2. Studentenwerk If you have booked a room in any student hostel and you are lucky enough to get a room, the 2 nd priority will be to visit the Studentenwerk to sign the contract and get your room keys. 3. Registration at the city hall (Rathaus) You have to register yourself in the city you live in with your full address. You need to bring your house/room contract and your passport along with you. 4. Opening a bank account You need to have a bank account where you can receive your scholarship money/others transactions. To open an account you need to bring along with you the registration letter provided by the Rathaus, your passport and your semester ticket. 5. Telephone/ SIM card Call-Ya Cards are available for purchase at diverse stores. For example, a T-Mobile Congstar Card can be purchased at the media store, called Saturn. You do not have to pay much money for such cards. If you did not bring your mobile phone with you or in case that it is not compatible with such cards, you may purchase a new mobile phone. Those can be purchased for little money, as well. 6. Subscribing for an internet account To use internet at the university campus and at the student hostels provided by Studentenwerk, a valid user name and password is required. This can be obtained from the University internet center (ITS). All you need to have is your semester ticket in your hand. 7. Registration at University library
You will be taken to the university library to subscribe for a library card so that you can borrow books and use the library on-line service too. You need to have a permanent address in Kassel so that your library card can be sent to you. 8. Alien Department for Visa (Ausländerbehörde) Earlier you receive a 3 months visa to enter into Germany. Within these 3 months you need to renew your visa for the time period of your studies. Your visa is renewed upon showing the following proofs: - Student ID - Rathaus registration letter - Health insurance cover - Bank account transaction - Scholarship proof (letter) - Valid passport - Biometric photos 9. Markets for Halal food There are many shops in Kassel where Halal food is available. These shops will be pointed out. 10. Getting acquainted in the city Kassel Tour will be given in the city center to get to know the place well. Important offices (tram/bus office, electricity office, student services, Studentenwerk, bank, City Hall, shops, train stations etc) will also be a part of this tour.
What you have to take with you Important documents Make sure to bring the following important documents: certified copies of awarded academic degrees certified copies of academic transcripts of records certified copies of school leaving certificate certified copies of job reference or attestation of employment related to renewable energies in English proof of English proficiency: TOEFL or IELTS proof of health insurance in case that you have not presented these documents yet. Note, that it will not be possible to hand out the student ID without these documents. Also do not forget to bring these things with you: warm clothes and a jacket. enough cash for the very first days.
