GERMAN 2 Winter 2015 INTRODUCTORY GERMAN 9L : MWF 8:45-9:50, Th 9:00-9:50 10 : MWF 10:00-11:05, Th 12:00-12:50 Eric Miller Dartmouth Hall 330 Classroom: Dartmouth Hall 213 Office hours: ericmiller1957@gmail.com Mo 11, Th 10, aba Required Books Robert Di Donato, Monica D. Clyde, Jacqueline Vansant: Deutsch: Na klar!, 6th edition (McGraw-Hill, 2012). ISBN 978 0 07 338633 2 [available at Wheelock Bookstore] On-Line Resources Deutsch: Na klar! Online Learning Center: Textbook Audio, Lab Audio Program, Vocabulary Quizzes, Grammar Quizzes, and ActivityPak. (The website for the first four is http:/www.mhhe.com/dnk6, then click on "Student Edition". The website for ActivityPak is http:/www.mhhe.com/dnk5, then click on "Student Edition".) We will use Lab Audio only at the very beginning of the course, for a review of German pronunciation (Aussprache). The rest are integral parts of your daily use of the textbook. Any exercise with a "headphones" icon has a listening portion that you will find in Textbook Audio. ActivityPak and the Quizzes are part of your daily homework assignments. To type the special German characters in the online exercises, look to the scroll-down menu in the upper right-hand corner (sometimes the bottom center) of the exercise's page. To submit your ActivityPak homework results to me, go to "report", then "save", then email the saved page to me (at my gmail address, please: ericmiller1957@gmail.com). Mac users will need to maximize the page in order to see the "report" link. To submit your Quiz results to me, go to the bottom of the "Results Reporter" page (it pops up after you submit your answers), and email the results to me (again, at my gmail address, please: ericmiller1957@gmail.com). Lexinomicon and DartDrill each contain the same set of computer exercises that are coordinated, chapter for chapter, with Deutsch: Na klar!. DartDrill is a website you use on-line; Lexinomicon has to be downloaded to your computer, but is much prettier. Links may be found at the bottom of the German Department homepage. They, too, are part of your regular assignments, but it has no reporting mechanism, so that all Lexinomicon/DartDrill assignments are on the honor system. The Lexinomicon/DartDrill exercises are superior to the ones provided by your textbook, so I urge you to be diligent about this part of the daily homework. Especially useful are the Vocabulary (Wortschatz) exercises at the end of each Kapitel. Grammar Review is a resource that will become ever more
useful to you as you progress in German. It contains fuller explanations of various grammatical forms and structures, organized around grammatical categories and sub-categories. It is a very, very useful tool for reviewing grammatical concepts, say, before an exam. A link may be found at the bottom of the German Department homepage. Professor Bruce Duncan's Fall 2014 German 1 Syllabus contains numerous links to helpful and entertaining websites. It is well worth exploring. (Professor Duncan is the German Department's ewizard. He created Lexinomicon, DartDrill and Grammar Review, as well as Annotext, which you will come to love when you take higher-level German courses.) A link may be found at the end of the Fall 2011 German 1 course announcement on the German Department website. Course Requirements Attendance. First and foremost, you must come to all the classes. More than two unexcused absences will adversely affect your grade. (Objectively speaking, of course, even one absence will hurt you, since you won't have learned the material.) Drill sessions. These are an essential and required part of the course. More than two unexcused absences will adversely affect your grade. They will begin on Monday, 12 January 2015, and meet four times a week, either on the same day as class, i.e. Monday-Wednesday-Thursday-Friday, at 7:45am, or on Monday- Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday at 5:20pm, each in a location to be announced. Please arrive on time! (That goes for class, too.) Oral Preparation. Come to class prepared. This means being ready to participate and perform in the oral exercises assigned for that day. Remember: "oral" does not mean "written-lite"! As often as not, an oral assignment is more, not less, work than a written assignment. If you feel and look like a deer in the headlights when I call on you, then you did not prepare properly. Written homework. Written homework from the textbook is due on the day for which it is assigned. Late homework will be marked as such, and too many of them will adversely affect your grade. Homework is about learning the material, so there are two possible grades: "done" and "not done". (Well,... three, actually, since there is also "done late".) All written assignments must be hard-copy, either print-outs or hand-written. (This is for my personal convenience: correcting with a red pen onto paper is still much faster than those electronic textediting programs.) They must also be double-spaced, so that I have room for corrections. If we go over a written assignment orally in class, I welcome self-corrections, since you will remember the correct answer much better that way than you would if you just glance at my corrections for one nanosecond a day or two later. Therefore, written homework will be handed in at the end of class. Online homework and quizzes. The on-line homework is to be submitted electronically and must be completed before the class for which it is due. For the details on how to submit them, see
above, under "Deutsch: Na klar! Online Learning Center". Ideally, you will submit them well before 8:45 am, so that I can check before class, to see what people are having trouble with. The on-line quizzes are always listed under "after class" for that class whose material they are quizzing. They are to be completed after class. In-class quizzes. Almost every day, class will begin with a very short (2 or 3 minutes) quiz, generally on grammatical forms or on vocabulary. (If you are late to class, you miss the quiz.) Communicative Tasks. Among the goals of each chapter of Deutsch: Na klar! is to be able to perform a basic communicative task. The task is announced in the syllabus at the beginning of each chapter. For the oral communicative tasks, the test will involve a one-on-one enactment of that task, in a short dialogue with the Resident Advisor of the Max Kade Center, with me listening. It will take place during the drill session on the day of the chapter test. Written communicative tasks will be due on the day of the chapter test. Group learning. Language is a social skill: people learn languages much better in groups. I thus encourage you to work together as much as you want, especially on the oral assignments. All graded written work should be your own, however. The boundary between group learning and cheating (or at least being a free rider) can be theoretically vague, but in practice it is almost always pretty clear: if you're just getting the answer without really learning it, then it's not group learning. Grading Course grades will be based on attendance and performance in class and drills, on homework, quizzes, chapter tests, the midterm examination, and the final examination. Language learning is cumulative, cognitively hierarchical, and largely a matter of consciously developing semi-conscious habit-patterns. Thus, in a language course there is no substitute for staying on top of the material from day to day and working hard throughout the term. If you come to class well-prepared every single day, you will almost certainly get a very good grade. If you try to cram it all in during the last week of the term, you will almost certainly not get a good grade.
