VESSELS & EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENT in SPECIFICATION 1A1 Self-Elevating Wind Turbine Installation and Crane Unit CLEAN DESIGN, NAUT-OSV(A), OPP-F, DYNPOS-AUTR, DPS2, E0, CRANE
VESSELS & EQUIPMENT Notations IMO equipment class 2 notations: DYNPOS AUTR where worst single failure is loss of 3 thrusters and 3 generators. Higher safety requirements = smaller weather window DPS 2 where worst single failure is loss of one thruster and one generator. Suitable safety requirements = bigger weather window A2SEA recommends in general to operate using DPS 2 in wind installation, because of more flexibility, but we can operate using DYNPOS AUTR if the customer or situation requires.

PRACTICAL USE OF DP
VESSELS & EQUIPMENT SEA INSTALLER DP Modes When you re in DP autopos the system controls for-aft, sideways and heading (auto-surge/auto-sway/auto-head) movements according to the commands (input) given by the operator. If either of these movements is excluded from the system control, then you re not in DP anymore. With one or two of above option in use you re in DP Man. Joystick. If none selected you re in manual mode.

VESSELS & EQUIPMENT Use of DP on Approach We have been using DP autopos for approaching/ positioning the installations. We remain in DP autopos until we are sure that we good penetration/ weight on all the legs before we change to DP joystick and after checking that no force is needed to keep position we go to manual and then stop of the thrusters.
VESSELS & EQUIPMENT Use of DP on Departure We have been using DP.joystick for leaving the installations, where the system is controlling the heading and depending on the position of the installation (aft or port) either sway or surge. We control the movement in a straight line away from the installation.
VESSELS & EQUIPMENT Use of DP in the wind industry When we are clear of the installation we shift to the next position in joystick or autopos mode and before making the final approach we stop for at least 20 min on the desired heading in DP autopos to build up the model. (the latter part is what takes the time) You can argue that DP makes operation more safe, and for an inexperienced officer or during bad weather it will most likely be just as quick or even quicker than if in manual mode. A person very experienced in handling a vessel with several thrusters, as we have, might be able to do it quickly too but this is very individual. It all comes down to experience.
VESSELS & EQUIPMENT Clients and DP Our clients think DP is a wonderfull tool, but unfortunately, they do not understand the implications. Redundancy Build up of DP model In the wind industry the Marine Warranty Surveyor is the people with influence on our operation. We have a nice tool and we know how to use it and that s also fine with us (makes it a lot easier for us ).
VESSELS & EQUIPMENT Use of Thrusters and DP On the first installation we used all thrusters but that was way overkill in normal weather conditions so, we haven t used all of the fwd thrusters in the subsequent installations. Final approach/ positioning and leaving again is going very smooth in DP, but I think that shifting between sites is taking a bit more time than it would do if the manoeuvres were done in manual, especially because the DP system needs time to build a model.
VESSELS & EQUIPMENT DP works In wind/current close to our operational max the DP worked very well able to keep position within ½ mtr and in less aggressive environment (current and wind) the vessel keeps position within 0,1-0,2 mtr. The downside is, when working in DP, it is bit difficult to get to learn how the vessels handles in full manual handling, and we do have limited time in our operational timetable to train, as we do arrival and departure in port on joystick mode.
Thank you!
