APPLICATION NOTE 140 WITNESS WORKSTATION SETUP NOTES This application note is designed to outline the basic steps in setting up additional Workstations onto a Modern Witness Security Network. The Modern Witness Security Network starts off with a PC, called a Concentrator, that is connected to the Controller(s) and allows all functions of Modern Witness including programming of the Controllers. An additional PC, called a Workstation, can be added on to the Network and used to view events and make changes to the User List. An additional PC, called a Server, can be added on to the Network to provide a higher level of network security as well as provide for a higher efficiency in sharing the data files when there are more then 2 PC's sharing the same files. The Modern Witness Security Network can use any of the Network structures (ie: Ethernet or TokenRing) as well as support all of the various network protocols (ie: NetBEUI, TCP/IP, IPX/SPX). Although it would be preferable for the Modern Witness Security Network (MWSN) to be its own network for the best security, it can be part of an existing network without any degradation of operation. Whenever possible, include the inhouse Information Services Department in setting up and managing the MWSN. In a MWSN, the 3 types of computers involved are: Concentrator: The PC that is attached to the Controllers. The Concentrator is also used as a Workstation. The Concentrator will be running the Modern Witness Software and Modern Manager. The Concentrator is also used to program the Controllers. The Concentrator should be running WIN95 or WIN NT4.0 if you have up to 2 Controllers or has a Remote Controller Modem. The Concentrator must be running WIN 3.11 For WorkGroups if there are 3 or more Controllers. Workstation: The PC that is attached to the Network and is not connected to any Controllers. The Workstation will be running the Modern Witness Software. It will allow you to make changes to the Users lits (card holders), view events, manually perform actions on the Controllers and generate reports. Server: The PC that is attached to the Network, is not connected to any Controllers and stores the Events and Master Database files for use by the Concentrator and the Workstations. The Server usually has a directory structure dedicated to the Witness files. The Server can be the Concentrator or Workstation PC's, but should be a separate PC that is running Server software such as NT4.0 Server or Netware. These Servers are designed with faster Hard drives for file sha ring with 2 or more PC's. Note: the WIN 3.11 Concentrator should not be used as Servers if there are more then 2 Controllers or a Remote Controller Modem since WIN 3.11 is not fast enough for both file sharing and Modern Manager. Page 1 of 7

OVERVIEW OF MODERN WITNESS SECURITY NETWORK STRUCTURES WIN95 Concentrator and a single WIN95 Workstation This option is the best if there is just one additional Workstation. The Network connection can be a COAX cable, RJ-45 10MHz or 100 MHz cross connect cable (the RJ-45 100MHz is preferred due to the high speed). The Concentrator is used to store all of the event and user information and share these files with the Workstation. The Workstation will get all of its information from files on the Concentrator. Both PC's will have to have files modified to set up the network. If this network has more then 2 PC's, or if this network has more then 2 Controllers, you should use a Server. See the attached Server notes for details. See the additional notes in Application Note 139, the attached sections and the Windows 95 manuals for notes on setting up the various options. NOTES: only the Concentrator can modify the programs on the Controllers. The Drive Letter W: can be any available letter D: to Z: Option: Add PcAnywhere programs to the Workstation and the Concentrator to allow the Workstation to program the Controllers. Procedures for the Concentrator: running 100MHz using NetBEUI protocol) 2) install Modern Witness and set up the Concentrator as per normal instructions 3) Run the program: SYSEDIT and the the following text line to the bottom of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file: SUBST W: C:\ Page 2 of 7

4) Run the program WINDOWS EXPLORER and SHARE the directory C:\WITNESS - Provide FULL permission rights since the Workstation will require the ability to edit the Master file as well as other files in the Witness directory. (do not share W:\witness but C:\WITNESS; for the SHARE AS NAME, I recommend Share Name: WITNESS) 5) Run the program WITNESS CONFIGURATION\Options and ensure that the WITNESS MANAGER program is to be turned ON whenever Windows is started. (add the Check mark to the Box) 6) Run the program WITNESS CONFIGURATION\Multiple Company and change the Master Master = w:\witness\master.mdb 7) Installation of a Tape Back-up System is highly recommended. Procedures for the Workstation: running 100MHz using NetBEUI protocol) 2) install Modern Witness software as per normal insttructions. You will not be required to add Ports and Controllers since they are on the Concetrator. 3) Modern Witness 1 - Run the program WINDOWS EXPLORER and remove the files C:\WITNESS\MODERN.PIF (may appear as MODERN with an MSDOS icon. Select properties to verify) and C:\WITNESS\MANAGER.EXE. This will prevent the Program Controllers Icon button from appearing in Modern Witness and prevent Witness Configuration from asking to RUN NOW. Modern Witness 2 - Run the program WINDOWS EXPLORER and remove the files C:\WITNESS\MODPRO.EXE and C:\WITNESS\MANAGER.EXE. This will prevent the Program Controllers Icon button from appearing in Modern Witness and prevent Witness Configuration from asking to RUN NOW. 4) Run the program WINDOWS EXPLORER and MAP NETWORK DRIVE select drive W: to equal the Witness directory on the Concentrator. IE: W: = \\concentrator\c:\ (where "concentrator" is the netwrok name of the PC as listed in the Control Panel, Network, Identification settings) 5) Run the program WITNESS CONFIGURATION\Options and ensure that the WITNESS MANAGER program is turned OFF (remove the check mark in the box) whenever Windows is started. 6) Run the program WITNESS CONFIGURATION\Multiple Company and change the Master Page 3 of 7

Master = w:\witness\master.mdb 7) Run the program MODERN.INI and change the following lines to match the options shown: [Witness] AutoRun=0 AutoViewUpdateSeconds=10 AlwaysTimeUpdateViewEvents=1 AutoRun 0=do not start Modern Manager 1= start Modern Manager when Windows Starts AutoView. (number)= the number of seconds that the Workstation will look at the Event file for updated information AlwaysTim 0= display the events as they occur. Set on Concentrator only 1= display the events only after the AutoViewUpdateSeconds time has passed Page 4 of 7

Server Network with Concentrators and Workstations This option is the best if there is 1 Workstations connected to a WIN3.11 Concentrator, or you have a system that has multiple Workstations and/or Concentrators. The Network connection can be a Coax cable, RJ-45 10MHz or 100 MHz using a Network HUB (the RJ-45 100MHz is preferred due to the high speed). The Concentrator is used to communicate with the Controllers and will store all of the event and user information on the Server's hard drive. The Server will share these files with the Workstation(s) and Concentrator(s). The Workstation(s) will get all of their information from files on the Server. All PC's will have to have files modified to set up the network. See the additional notes in Application Note 139, the attached sections and the Windows 95 manuals for notes on setting up the various options. NOTES: only the Concentrator can modify the programs on the Controllers. The Drive Letter W: can be any available letter D: to Z: If the Network or Server is to be turned off/reset, stop Modern Manager on the Concentrator(s) first. Option: Add PcAnywhere programs to the Server, Workstation(s) and the Concentrator(s) to allow the Workstation to program the Controllers. Add a PcAnywhere dial-in Modem port for management of the system from outside of the site. Procedures for the Server: Page 5 of 7

running 100MHz using NetBEUI protocol. Use the higher Security TCP/IP which will require Logging onto the network) 2) installation of a Un-Interruptable Power Supply is recommended to reduce the possibility of Modern manager Errors caused by the loss of the Network. 3) Run the program WINDOWS EXPLORER, CREATE and SHARE the directory C:\WITNESS - Provide FULL permission rights since the Workstation(s) and Concentrator(s) will require the ability to edit the Master file and Event files in the Witness directory. 4) Installation of a Tape Back-Up system is highly recommended. Procedures for the Concentrator: running 100MHz using NetBEUI or TCP/IP protocol) 2) install Modern Witness and set up the Concentrator as per normal instructions 3) Run the program WINDOWS EXPLORER (or FILE MANAGER if using WIN 3.11 WFW) and MAP NETWORK DRIVE select drive W: to equal the Witness directory on the Server. IE: W: = \\server\c:\ 4) Run the program WITNESS CONFIGURATION\Options and ensure that the WITNESS MANAGER program is to be turned ON whenever Windows is started. (add the Check mark to the Box) 5) Run the program WITNESS CONFIGURATION\Multiple Company and change the Master Master = w:\witness\master.mdb 6) Run the program MODERN.INI and change the following lines to match the options shown: [Witness] AutoRun=1 AutoViewUpdateSeconds=10 AlwaysTimeUpdateViewEvents=1 7) Setup this PC for AutoLogon if a logon and password is required for the network. (see Application note 139 for details) Procedures for the Workstation: running 100MHz using NetBEUI or TCP/IP protocol) Page 6 of 7

2) install Modern Witness software as per normal instructions. 4) Run the program WINDOWS EXPLORER and MAP NETWORK DRIVE select drive W: to equal the Witness directory on the Server.
