Portland Names Pritchard Interim Head Coach Kevin Pritchard, who has served as Director of Player Personnel since August, was named interim head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers on March 2. He replaced Maurice Cheeks, who was relieved of his coaching duties the same day. We made this change in order to evaluate the entire roster and to put the franchise in the best position as we had towards the draft and free agency, said Trail Blazers General Manager John Nash. We appreciate all of Maurice s efforts during this difficult time and wish him well in the future. Pritchard becomes the eleventh head coach in the franchise s 35 seasons and the second to serve in an interim position. Before joining the Trail Blazers organization last summer, the 37-year-old Pritchard served for a year and a half as a scout with the San Antonio Spurs. Prior to that, he was with the Kansas City Knights of the American Basketball Association. There he served as the team s general manager, head coach and director of player personnel. In 2001-02, he led the Knights to the ABA championship. He was selected in the second round (34th pick overall) in the 1990 NBA Draft by Golden State. In addition to the Warriors, he also played for Boston, Philadelphia, Miami and Washington in the NBA. Pritchard also played in Spain, Italy, Germany and in the Continental Basketball Association. Pritchard was a standout basketball player at the University of Kansas where he was an All-Big 8 selection his senior year and was a starter in 129 of his 139 collegiate games over four seasons. In addition to all-conference honors, he was a three-time All-Big 8 Academic Team selection. Averaging 12.2 points during his career with the Jayhawks, he ranks among the school s all-time top 10 in scoring, assists, steals and three-pointers. Cheeks became the Trail Blazers 10th head coach on June 27, 2001, after serving seven seasons as an assistant at Philadelphia, four of those under Larry Brown. His 162 victories ranks fourth on the Trail Blazers alltime head coaching chart. In three-plus seasons with Portland, Cheeks led the club to the playoffs twice. His 2002-03 team finished 50-32 and took a red-hot Dallas Mavericks team to seven games in the Western Conference playoffs first round. TRAIL BLAZERS COACHING RECORDS REGULAR SEASON PLAYOFFS Yrs. Portland 90, New Orleans 81 --- Sunday, April 10, New Orleans Arena A bunch of nasty streaks were exorcized in New Orleans Sunday when the Trail Blazers downed the Hornets, 90-81... The victory broke Portland s season-longest losing streaks---seven straight overall and 10 in a row on the road... It was only the second road win over a Western Conference team... Before New Orleans, the Blazers had dropped 21 in a row on the road to teams from the west after opening the season with a victory at Golden State... It was the first victory away from the Rose Garden this season over a Southwest Division team and it broke a four-game Hornets winning streak in the series... Shareef Abdur-Rahim continued his strong play for the Trail Blazers, posting his second straight double-double with game highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds... Damon Stoudamire, fighting off the effects of a bruised shoulder suffered late in Friday s game with Sacramento, gutted it out for 19 points and a team-high 9 assists in 37 minutes... Ruben Patterson added 16 points and Travis Outlaw continued his strong play off the bench with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots... Outlaw s slam dunk with 6:20 left in the second quarter wiped out New Orleans last lead of the game... The Blazers, Up by six entering the third quarter, went on a 14-2 run midway through the third stanza then held off a Hornet rally in the fourth to get their first road victory since Feb. 14 at Charlotte... Forward Lee Nailon led the Hornets with 20 points. 1 2 3 4 0T Final Att. 75. Sacramento 119, Portland 115 --- Friday, April 8, The Rose Garden The game lived up to its advanced billing: Another high-scoring shoot-out... The Trail Blazers shot 55% for the game, had four players with 20 or more points for the first time this season and raced to a 35-25 lead after one quarter... But the inability to keep the Sacramento Kings from rebounding their own misses took a big toll and the Blazers went down, 119-115, for their seventh straight loss, their 14th in the last 15 games and their fifth in a row at home... The setback, which gave the Kings the season s series three games to one, dropped the Blazers into a tie with Utah for last place in the Northwest Division... Darius Miles, back in action after missing three games with a bruised shoulder, scored 23 points to match Shareef Abdur-Rahim for team honors... Miles, making 8 of 15 field goals and all seven free throws, sparked a surge that helped Portland jump to a 63-59 halftime lead... Abdur-Rahim added 13 rebounds to his 23 points for his 12th double-double, while Sebastian Telfair contributed 21 points and Ruben Patterson 20... Joel Przybilla gathered in 15 rebounds to give him a total of 72 in the four-game series with the Kings... Sacramento s control of its own backboards--- the Kings had 21 offensive rebounds and 27 second chance points to 10 for the Blazers was a major factor... So too 10 triples on 22 attempts by the visitors to just 4 for 10 for Portland... Peja Stojakovic led all scorers in the game with 35 points including 6 baskets from three-point range. 1 2 3 4 0T Final Att. Golden State 104, Portland 102 --- Wednesday, April 6, The Rose Garden After a flat performance in an 11-point loss at Utah the night before, the Trail Blazers turned in a high-energy and entertaining effort Wednesday before ultimately losing to the red-hot Golden State Warriors, 104-102, in the Rose Garden... It extended Portland s losing streak to six in a row and four straight in the Rose Garden... The Blazers have lost 13 of their last 14 and 19 of their last 21... But it nearly came up a W as four Trail Blazers veterans ratcheted up their games... Damon Stoudamire, who posted the first Trail Blazers triple double (13 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists) since the one he had four years ago to the day against the same Warriors team, saw his three-pointer bounce off the back of the rim as time expired, ending a spirited comeback on a down note... The Blazers started slow and had fallen behind by as many as 19 points by midway through the second quarter... But a spirited third quarter rally and inspired play by Ruben Patterson, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Joel Przybilla and Stoudamire got the Blazers back in the game... A 10-2 run to open the fourth quarter earned Portland its first lead since the opening minutes, 92-91, with 6:42 left in the game... But Warriors regained the advantage and escaped with the two-point victory... Patterson was huge for the Blazers, matching his season-high with 27 points... Abdur-Rahim added 21 points and Przbyilla again dominated play in the middle with a season-high matching 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots... Stoudamire had his best game in weeks, including five steals with his triple-double... Baron Davis and Troy Murphy led the Warriors with 22 points each.. The Blazers lost despite shooting 48.7% for the game, but Golden State cashed in on 11 three-pointers to only three for Portland. 1 2 3 4 0T Final Att. Utah 90, Portland 79 --- Tuesday, April 5, Delta Center, Salt Lake City Things looked good for the first 12 minutes but the wheels started coming off in the middle of the second quarter as the Trail Blazers lost their fifth straight game, a 90-79 decision at the hands of Jazz in Utah... The loss, Portland s 10th straight on the road and the 16th in the last 18 games, closed the gap between the Blazers and Jazz to just one game for the NBA s fourth worst record... The Blazers, behind Damon Stoudamire and Joel Przybilla, moved out to a 10 point lead in the game s first six minutes and after one quarter were ahead, 21-16... Utah gained the lead for good with 6:49 left in the second quarter and moved ahead 46-40 at intermission... Portland scored a season-low 10 points, made just four field goals, shot 27 percent and turned the ball over eight times in the third quarter, falling behind 67-50... Only a strong fourth quarter by Portland s reserves kept the game from becoming a bigger embarrassment... Joel Przybilla, who tallied 13 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and blocked 7 shots, shared team scoring honors with Sebastian Telfair and Travis Outlaw... Matt Harpring led the Jazz, who snapped a three-game losing streak, with 17 points. 1 2 3 4 0T Final Att. Denver 103, Portland 97 --- Saturday, April 2, The Rose Garden A devastating 6:58 span of the fourth quarter turned an otherwise strong game against one of the West s top teams into a 103-97 loss for the shorthanded Trail Blazers in the Rose Garden... Portland jumped to an early lead over the Denver Nuggets, a club battling for home court advantage in the upcoming playoffs, lost the lead then recovered to go ahead by three, 86-83 with 8:08 remaining in the game... From there, the Nuggets launched a 14-0 run and Portland could never get inside six after that... During that drought the Blazers were 0 for 9 from the field and turned the ball over five times while the Nuggets were connecting on 7 of 10 from the field... Damon Stoudamire led all scorers with 27 points on 11 of 19 shooting and Shareef Abdur-Rahim, playing all but four seconds of the game, added 21... Sebastian Telfair gave out a career-high 10 assists to go with 16 points for his first career double-double... But with Abdur-Rahim and Joel Przybilla, who grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, the only big men available for action, Portland s inside game suffered... Darius Miles and Theo Ratliff both were in street clothes nursing shoulder injuries and Zach Randolph, lost for the season, underwent knee surgery two days earlier... Carmelo Anthony led five Nuggets in double-digit scoring with 23 points... It was Portland s fourth straight loss, its 11th in the last 12 games and its third straight at home. 1 2 3 4 0T Final Att. TRAIL BLAZERS vs. SPURS DIGGING OUT THE SPURS... Portland wraps up a two-game incursion into Southwest Division territory Tuesday at One SBC Center in San Antonio (5:30 p.m., NewsRadio 750-KXL, MAGIA 1150 AM-Spanish Radio, KGW-TV)... The Trail Blazers are looking to extend their road winning streak to two in a row and at the same time capture the season series from the Spurs, a team that owns the NBA s second best record... The Blazers, who have struggled against San Antonio over the past five years, beat the Spurs in their last meeting on Jan. 24 in the Rose Garden, 107-99... In the first clash of the season, also in the Rose Garden, Portland suffered its biggest loss ever to the Spurs, 114-89, so Tuesday s contest is the tiebreaker in this season s three-game series... Under the new divisional alignment in the West, the two teams face each othef only three times in the current campaign and this is Portland s only visit to San Antonio... The Blazers victory on Jan. 24 snapped a seven-game series losing streak to the Spurs, their longest in the 29 years the two teams have been going at it... The point margin in the last five losses to San Antonio all were in double digits... Making it two in a row over the Spurs will be a challenge since the Texas team is locked in a battle with Phoenix for the No. 1 seed in the West in the upcoming playoffs... Going into Tuesday s game, the Spurs are a half-game back of the Suns for the West s (and the NBA s) best record. THE LAST TWO BLAZERS-SPURS GAMES 27. San Antonio 114, Portland 89 --- Thursday, Dec. 30, Rose Garden Portland fell behind, 17-2, in the game s first seven minutes and never seriously challenged as the Southwest Division-leading San Antonio Spurs rolled to a 114-80 victory in the final Rose Garden game for 2004... The 34-point loss was Portland s biggest in 108 games between the two teams and extended the Spurs winning streak in the series to seven in a row... The Blazers have won only three of their last 15 games with the Spurs who this time had season opponent highs 47 field goals and 34 assists... A bright spot in the game for Portland was the continued strong play of Darius Miles at small forward... He tallied a team-high 17 points in 33 minutes, making 7 of 14 from the field and his only three-pointer...the game also marked the return of Shareef Abdur-Rahim who contributed a double-double---14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in 31 minutes... Damon Stoudamire came off the bench and distributed a team-high seven assists in just 18 minutes... The talent-deep Spurs had six players finish in double-figure scoring, led by Tim Duncan s 19 points... Guard Tony Parker scored 18 points and rookie Beno Udrih had a career-high 14 points and 10 assists... The Blazers were down 57-36 at halftime but got to within 15, 74-59, late in the third quarter before the Spurs opened it up in the final 12 minutes, making 15 of their 19 field goal attempts (79%) while limiting Portland to 6 of 20 (30%)... Portland 107, San Antonio 99 --- Monday, Jan. 24, Rose Garden The Trail Blazers snapped their season s longest losing streak---six games---by beating San Antonio, the team with the NBA s best record, 107-99, in a thriller in the Rose Garden on Wednesday... Not only did they stop the losing streak but they also put an end to a domination that saw the Blazers drop their previous seven encounters with the Spurs, the last five by margins of 10 points or more... Two nights after going up against the Southwest Divisionleading Spurs in San Antonio, the Blazers are back in the Rose Garden to battle the Dallas Mavericks, a team with the league s fourth best record (52-24) that is battling to hold on to the fourth slot and home court advantage in the playoffs beginning a week from Saturday... The Blazers, who lost all three previous meetings to the Mavs and have dropped five in a row going back to the middle of the last campaign, will be out to keep the Texas team from sweeping the season series for the first time in the 25-year-old series... Overall, the Blazers have won 14 season series, the Mavericks six and there have been five ties... Portland leads the all-time series, 65-41 and has a 41-11 advantage in games played in the Rose City... So far this season, the Blazers lost both times in Dallas---92-83 on Nov. 26, and, in a close game on Mar. 17, 94-88... The Mavericks, winners on their last two visits to the Rose Garden, beat the Blazers there on Jan. 26, 95-88. TRAIL BLAZING RANDOLPH UNDERGOES SURGERY... Zach Randolph, the team s leading scorer and rebounder and last season s NBA Most Improved Player, underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee March 30. Dr. Don Roberts, the Trail Blazers team orthopedist, performed the surgery at the Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver. In addition to the arthroscopic procedure, Dr. Roberts performed a microfracture procedure to expose bone surface to encourage cartilage growth. Randolph is expected to begin mild rehabilitation activities immediately and will be in a straight leg immobilizer for a brief period. He is expected to ready for training camp in October. Randolph missed 13 games after suffering a bone contusion on the right knee in the Jan. 12 game at Washington and was placed on the injured list on March 14. In 46 games this season, he averaged 18.9 points and 9.6 rebounds and recorded 22 double-doubles. THE FACTS Portland is out of the playoffs for the second year in a row after a run of 21 consecutive appearances... When the Trail Blazers missed the cut last season for the first time since 1981-82, they came up one shy of matching the all-time NBA record of 22 straight post-season bookings by the Philadelphia-Syracuse franchise from 1950 to 1971... The Blazers have been in the playoffs in all but nine of their 35 seasons with six of those misses coming in the franchise s first six seasons. Before this season, the Trail Blazers had won at least 45 percent of its games for 30 consecutive seasons, recording 37 or more victories in 29 seasons and going 35-15 in the lockout-shortened 1998-99 campaign. Sunday s win at New Orleans ended a seven-game losing streak which matching their longest season s longest (March 14 to March 24)... The previous longest streak was 12 in a row in 1985-86... The team s longest string of games without a win was 13 during the 1971-72 season. Portland has now lost 14 of the last 15 and 20 of its last 22 games. The victory at New Orleans snapped a 10-game road losing streak that matched last year s run of 10 losses in a row to start the season... Before that, the longest run without a road win was 13 during the 1985-86 season... The all-time franchise record for consecutive road losses was 21 during the 1973-74 season. The Blazers are on a five-game home losing streak, their longest since 1995-96... That year, the team lost six in a row at home which matched the longest in franchise history... It happened twice before----in 1971-72 and again in 1972-73. The Blazers are 16-22 in the Rose Garden thus far with three home games remaining... The 22 losses is the most since the 1972-73 season and is matches the losses by the franchise s first team in 1970-71 for the third highest in team history. Portland s 29 road losses is the most since the 1988-89 season when that year s team finished 11-30... The all-time worst Blazers road record was recorded by the 1971-72 team that won only four of its 41 games away from home. This is the first season with a losing record in 16 years and only the 10th in the franchise s 35 years... Six of those were in the first six seasons... With eight games remaining, the 51 losses ranks the fifth highest in club history and the most since 1973-74 when the record was 27-55.
