About Pumps & Pipes: A Revolution Innovation Through Collaboration Amongst Houston s Energy, Medicine and Aerospace Industries On a flight back to Houston, a cardiovascular surgeon and the passenger next to him, a drilling engineer, struck up a conversation about their respective professions, discussing a range of topics from blood vessels to extended-reach wells. As the exchange progressed, the heart doctor and engineer realized that underneath the specialized verbiage of each of their industries whether drilling for oil or performing heart surgery it s all a matter of pumps and pipes. Since 2007, ExxonMobil, Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center (HMDH&VC), University of Houston and more recently NASA, have collaborated on the Pumps & Pipes Symposium. This annual event brings together leading professionals and researchers in the energy, medicine, academic and aerospace industries, as well as venture capitalists, community leaders and equipment manufacturers, to exchange ideas, and explore crossover technologies. Pumps & Pipes Communication, Education and Collaboration A Tour of Pumps & Pipes Symposium Highlights For the past eight years, the Pumps & Pipes Symposiums have taken its audience from inner space to outer space with stops in between. Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. Henry Ford
Pumps & Pipes 1: Docs and Rocks During this inaugural Symposium at University of Houston, we explored the opportunities and potentials to develop cross-industry technologies. Meeting topics included: Endovascular Stents & Stent Grafts along with Oil Pipe Casing & Liners; Vascular Atherectomy & Plaque Analysis along with Downhole Coring & Sampling; and Staples, Glues & Stitches along with Multi-lateral Well Junctions. Pumps & Pipes 2: The Other Guy s Tool Kit This Symposium focused on showcasing tools, which could be used cross-industry. Meeting topics included: Robotics in Medicine and Energy; Imaging in a Well Bore and Inside a Blood Vessel; Magnetics; Membranes and Filters; and Nanomaterials. Pumps & Pipes 3: Better Together The Better Together theme presented a program that featured four focus areas: Pumps, Pipes, Fluids and Circuits. Speakers consisted of clinicians involved in cardiovascular medicine, researchers from the oil and gas industry, scientists and engineers from academia and medical device research and development specialists. Pumps & Pipes 4: No Boundaries Symposium highlights included a new venue at Houston Methodist Research Institute and our first live video feed of a cardiac surgery procedure. Research topics included: Filling Vascular Spaces; Multi-Zone Hydraulic Fracturing; Transcatheter Heart Valves and Bioengineering; Shape Memory Materials (metals and polymers); Robotics and Navigation Systems for Deep-Water Wells; and Treatment of Microbial-Induced Corrosion of Oil Pipelines. Pumps & Pipes International: Qatar Science and Technology Park This Symposium, organized by the Qatar Science & Technology Park, ExxonMobil and HMDH&VC, brought together more than 150 international experts in the fields of oil & gas engineering and cardiovascular medicine. Pumps & Pipes 5: New Horizons For the first time, the Symposium was broadcast live over the Internet. Topics included: Microbial-Induced Corrosion of Pipeline and Biofilm Imaging, Wellbore Tractors, Shape Memory Materials and Nanotechnology. Research results were presented on the use of the Heartbeat Simulator System for analysis of natural heart valve function, dysfunction and innovative devices for valve repair, and for MRI Visualization of Flow Field Through a Simulated Gravel-Pack Completion. Pumps & Pipes 6: Opportunity Now NASA Johnson Space Center was welcomed as a Pumps & Pipes member. The Lunar Rover Vehicle was displayed on-site at Houston Methodist Research Institute. Attendees saw a live video feed from the Palmer Station in Antarctica, an ROV feed from Deepwater Champion Drillship and a live video feed of an interventional surgical procedure. Other highlights included the introduction of six industry challenges. Pumps & Pipes Johnson Space Center: Uniquely Houston Held at the Johnson Space Center s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, the Symposium focused on Trajectory Control for Docking/Deployment, and Imaging and Applications for energy, medicine and aerospace. Dr. Ellen Ochoa, astronaut and Director of the Johnson Space Center was introduced as a new Pumps & Pipes Director, along with members of the Pumps & Pipes Advisory Board. Pumps & Pipes 7: Explorations Participants were immersed in an experience of Explorations, from inner space to outer space with stops in between. From the keynote presentation exploring the advances in transcatheter cardiovascular therapeutics, to NASA s Driven to Explore multi-media exhibit with a moon rock, to a stop at Halliburton s Nerves of the Oil Field, to the attendance of STEM students from Houston Independent School District, and a roaming reporter, Pumps & Pipes 7 was a truly unique experience.
