YOUR AREAS OF STUDY The School of Engineering Technology offers six programs that are important to the success of Qatar s economy: Chemical Laboratory Technician, Chemical Processing Technology. Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology. Our programs are designed to give you a real-world experience so you will be ready to start your career. CHEMICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN learn how to turn raw materials into products we use every day. What are Chemical Laboratory Technicians? Chemical Laboratory Technicians help to convert raw materials like oil, water and minerals into everyday materials such as plastics, rubber and textiles. These materials are used to make consumer and industrial goods. Technicians work with chemists and chemical engineers in a laboratory environment. Saeed Koleed Class of 2008 Choose CNA-Q! CNA-Q s Chemical Laboratory Technician program is customized for major chemical industries in Qatar, such as petrochemicals (which are made from oil & gas products). Our chemistry labs are built to industry standards, featuring modern equipment and computers. Group lab projects help you gain teamwork and problem solving skills. You will practice your skills in the real world through a work placement at the end of your program. Your Future Chemical Laboratory Technicians are in high demand, due to the growing importance of quality control in the lab. Join a chemical team in industry, government or a research institution. Employer: Qatar Chemical Company (QChem) Position: Assistant Lab Tester, performing quality control & environmental monitoring. What first got my attention was people mixing chemicals on TV shows, like Bill Nye The Science Guy. Also, I like to move around, so I didn t want an office job.

CHEMICAL PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY Join Qatar s booming oil & gas industry to help meet global demand for energy. What are Chemical Processing Technologists? Chemical Processing Technologists do chemical reactions in an industrial plant setting. An example of a chemical reaction is oil refining, where crude oil is changed into useful products like gasoline and diesel fuel. Chemical Processing Technologists have knowledge of design, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of plants and equipment. Ahmad Faleh Class of 2008 Choose CNA-Q! CNA-Q is proud to offer you its new Oil & Gas Training Centre, the largest and most inclusive training facility in the Middle East. Here, our students gain hands-on experience using modern equipment and techniques. Through group work and an applied research project, students learn other skills that are important in the workplace, such as teamwork, communication and problem solving. Your Future Chemical Process Technologists with up-to-date skills, like CNA-Q graduates, are in high demand to operate complex equipment found in modern industrial plants. Your future employers include oil & gas companies, refineries, petrochemical plants and manufacturing plants. Employer: Qatar Petroleum (QP) Position: Will work with QP upon graduation. This area of study is strongly related to gas production in Qatar. Look for the good positions in the current development of Qatar s gas industry. 9

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY Learn how to provide electricity to support people and industry. What are Electrical Engineering Technologists? Electrical engineering technologists distribute electric power to industries that use it. Our program focuses on Power & Controls. Power engineering is the distribution of electricity through devices such as motors, transformers and generators. Control engineering uses devices such as electrical circuits to control how electrical and motor systems behave such as the cruise control system in your car. Choose CNA-Q! This program focuses on the field of Power & Controls in order to meet industry needs. Our students learn technical skills in state-of-the-art labs and workshops, including our TERCO Power Distribution Systems Lab, a motors and drivers lab and an industrial controls (PLC) lab. Work terms and research projects give you the teamwork and communication skills you need for the workforce. Your Future Power & Controls technologists are required in any industry that has electrical systems. Since industries worldwide use more electricity than ever, you will have plenty of opportunities! Employers include power utilities, construction, engineering companies and oil & gas companies. Zaki Ahmed Khan Class of 2007 Employer: TRAGS Electrical Engineering Position: Site Electrical Engineer for Central Plants 2 & 4, which supply chilled water for cooling purposes to the new Convention Center at Education City. When I graduated high school, I was going to go to Canada or the U.S. At the time, CNA-Q was new. Rather than go away, I took the opportunity offered here. It was the right choice! 11

INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY Find out how automation can save time and money for major industries. What are Instrumentation Engineering Technologists? Instrumentation engineering technologists work with automated devices that are used in industry. For example, they can change settings from a control room without having to go to the plant or into the field. Instrumentation engineering technologists work on a team with engineers, technicians and other technologists. Choose CNA-Q! MECHANICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY Operate and maintain mechanical devices for use in industry. What are Mechanical Engineering Technologists? Mechanical engineering technologists use mechanical systems, such as pumps, engines and refrigeration devices. They must understand concepts like the strength of materials, heat transfer and hydraulics. They also develop computer drawings and models through engineering software. Choose CNA-Q! Our program focuses on industrial maintenance, so that you develop skills that are needed for top industries in Qatar such as oil & gas, utilities and manufacturing. Our students use fully-equipped machine shops, including a full-size 3-axis CNC milling machine. You also learn 3-D modelling techniques in our computer labs. Technical thesis projects and work terms prepare you to enter the workforce. Your Future As many industries rely on mechanical devices, you will have a lot of career opportunities. You could be designing devices, managing production resources or overseeing mechanical systems. TELECOMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY Use your love of technology to help people communicate with each other. What are Telecommunications Engineering Technologists? Telecommunications engineering technologists work with communication devices such as the telephone and the Internet. They use digital and fibre-optic technologies to make these devices work. They are able to design, operate and maintain telecommunications systems to allow people and businesses to communicate effectively. Choose CNA-Q! Our students get special training in electronics and software engineering for telecommunications. Work directly with devices such as microprocessors, network cables, satellite and Internet telephone in our Siemens 3G telecommunications lab. Through a technical thesis project and work terms, students are fully prepared to enter the workforce. Your Future Keeping up with population growth, telecommunications is a growing industry worldwide. The major employer of telecommunications graduates in Qatar is Qtel. Other industries like oil & gas are hiring expertise to manage and maintain telecommunications facilities. Normally when you use a phone you don t know anything about it, but we were able to learn what actually happens when you dial a number. It s a really interesting field. 17

OIL & GAS TRAINING CENTRE The Oil & Gas Process Control plant is designed to help students understand the fundamentals of process control, as used in the oil and gas industry. The students control the valve positions while using a computerized DCS (Distributed Control System) to see how it relates to temperature, level and flow control within a process. The students are introduced to calibration of instruments as well as tuning of process variables. There are seven main pieces of equipment that the students work on for hands-on training: Liquid-Liquid Extraction Fixed Bed Reactor Water Purification Plant Packed Distillation Column ph Control Plant Gas Absorption Trainer Three-Phase Separator This centre allows students of both the Engineering Technology and TPP programs to train on scale versions of the actual equipment they will use in the field. They learn the mechanics of the equipment including what to do in case of a technical failure. The Oil & Gas Training Centre is the only training facility of its kind in an educational institution in Qatar. 19

COLLEGE OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC - QATAR ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS 1. High School completion with an overall 60% average in: English Language - Grade 12 level (minimum 60%) Academic Mathematics - Grade 12 level (minimum 60%) or Advanced Math - Grade 12 level (minimum 50%) Two Science courses selected from Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics. One of these courses must be Grade 12 level; the other may be Grade 11 level. Chemistry and Physics are highly recommended. Mature Student Clause: Applicants who are 19 years of age or older, and who do not meet the entrance requirements above, may be considered on an individual basis. 2. Successful completion of the Skills Placement Assessment. FURTHER STUDIES Learning at School and at Work All our graduates are ready to enter the workforce when they graduate. However, some students use their education at CNA-Q as a stepping stone to a university degree program. CNA-Q has agreements with a number of universities where our students can continue their education. These include: University of Teesside, Middlesbrough, U.K. www.tees.ac.uk/sections/international/cnaq.cfm College of the North Atlantic in Canada also has articulation agreements with additional universities that may apply for CNA-Q graduates. Physical strength and agility may be required for this program. Employers will normally demand that all applicants take a physical test before being hired.
