Built on a long tradition of excellence, the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology has become one of the leading departments in engineering technology education across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The department offers associate, bachelor and short-term industrial training programs that are formulated to the needs of the kingdom s ever-growing industry. The primary goal of this department is to educate the next generation of technicians and engineers in mechanical engineering technology professions. The programs offered in the MET department are world class and are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc (ABET). The graduates of these programs get easy employment in the Kingdom as well as they continue their academic studiesinside the kingdom and abroad. The instructional program involves the basic concepts and practices in orthographic projections, dimensioning, tolerances, and surface development to the interpretation of engineering drawings. Internationally recognized drafting standards and conventions will be applied throughout the course. Computer aided drafting is used in the course and the student is enabled to have an introductory level of CAD skills. EGT 201: INDUSTRIAL SAFETY The purpose of this course is to teach student the conceptof the Industrial Safety and provide useful practical knowledgefor workplace safety and OH&S. It helps identification, evaluation, MSDS, Fire safety, Symbols & Signs including control of all the hazards and potential hazards to prevent or mitigate harm or damage to people, property, or the environment. MET 101 APPLIED MECHANICS Student Handbook-Information and Guidelines-2015 Page 4
5 This course deals with the fundamental concepts and principles of applied mechanics. It covers force components, moments and couples, and computation of the resultant of coplanar system of forces. It also considers the equilibrium of a particle & rigid body. Analyze trusses, frames and machines. It further considers problems related to Centeroid, center of gravity & friction. The course also introduces the concept of determining the maximum and minimum moment of inertia of an area. MET 102 MECHANICAL MEASUREMENTS To introduce to engineering students a basic understanding of the types measurement system types measuring tools and instruments to measure the various shape of components (work pieces) and will explain the method of calibrations. MET 103 MACHINE PROCESS1 This course illustrates the basic machine tool technology and related subjects, including different machines and tools. The content focuses on seven conventional manufacturing machines which are considered the most important processes in industrial applications. It also negotiates some important cutting conditions and parameters that students may face them during machining. The course uses traditional lab-lecturers program to enhance student s skills. MET 104 -MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY This course introduces the principles of manufacture of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their alloys, thermal insulating and corrosive resisting materials. The course covers the basic of physical metallurgy, powder metallurgy, shaping, forming, casting, plastic moulding, heat treatment processes and joining techniques of industrial material. Laboratory applications focus on physical microstructure examination of engineering materials.the student receives appropriate practical experience in carrying out the heat treatments and study their effects on the material, microstructure and mechanical properties. MET 105 PLANT MAINTENANCE The course introduces the student to the basic concepts of mechanical maintenance, functions and techniques, including preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, non-destructive testing, troubleshooting and fault diagnosis. The main mechanical maintenance activities presented are: lubrication, bearings, seals, leveling, alignment and equipment installation. The course also presents the basic maintenance activities for different plants and mechanical systems such as power plants, compressor plants, pumping stations, mechanical power transmission, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, etc. Workshop exercises will enhance the knowledge and hand skills of students in the field of mechanical maintenance. MET 201 MECHANICAL DRAFTING This course is designed to enhance the skills of students in creating and interpreting part and assembly drawings. Topics covered are threaded fasteners, locking devices, keys, welded joints, cotters and pin joints. Drawing of mechanical elements like Shaft Couplings, Pipes and Pipe Joints, Bearings, and Gears is taught. Application of dimensional and geometric tolerances, surface roughness symbols in production drawings is covered. The media of application varied from standard drafting instruments to the state of the art in computer aided design and drafting. MET 221 MACHINING PROCESS 2 Student Handbook-Information and Guidelines-2015 Page 5
6 This course covers advanced machining processes. It deals with a wide range of practical and theoretical work in the area of metal cutting and includes advanced operations such as threading, internal turning and taper turning, vertical, horizontal and inclined milling working with dividing head index plate on the milling machine, cutting forces, tool life, cutting tool materials, economics of cutting and variables affecting materials removal rate, nontraditional manufacturing, super finishing, single point tool sharpening and gear manufacturing. MET APPLIED STRENGTH OF MATERIALS This course deals with the concept of the mechanical properties, stresses and strains resulting from external applied loading. Calculations and graphical solutions are presented for simple axial stresses, shear stress, stresses in beams, stresses in shafts, and combined stresses. The course also presents different techniques of destructive and non-destructive and strength evaluation of metals and alloys. Buckling of columns is also covered through this course. Laboratory experiments cover the area of materials testing; including tension test, compression test, torsion test, bending test, shear test, impact test and hardness test. MET 223-CAD\CAM TECHNOLOGY This course introduces the application of computers in manufacturing using CAD/CAM software with emphasis on Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and application and programming of an industrial robot. The course also introduces the principles and practical applications of CNC machines including programming, operating and interfacing with different peripherals for data transfer. Students will learn all relevant commands to create part geometry and generate CNC machine codes for various metal parts choosing appropriate machining parameters. Emphasis is given on transferring part geometry from CAD to CAM for generating and verifying CNC program and discusses the role of CAD/CAM in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) and computer integrated manufacturing (CIM). Laboratory exercises support and reinforce classroom activity. Emphasis is placed on safe work methods while working on machines. Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to use CAD/CAM software to create 2D, 3D models and for tool path generation and demonstrate proper procedures for design and manufacture of simple parts. MET 224 INSPECTION AND QUALITY CONTROL This is an overview course on industrial inspection and quality control methods for manufactured parts. The course covers topics on inspection procedures, the use of standards, specifications, sampling techniques, statistical quality control (SQC), and the construction of the X - and R - control charts. Laboratory activities cover inspection techniques for linear and geometrical tolerances (flatness, squareness, roundness, etc...) and the use of inspection gauges and comparators. Modern inspection techniques are introduced and the students are given hands-on experience on co-ordinate measuring machine, profile projector, toolmaker's microscope and high speed motion analysis. MET 225 MACHINE TOOL DESIGN This course introduces the student to the design of machine tools. It guides the students to understand the design process, concepts of safety factor, and stress concentration. It concentrates on the design of machine tool elements and selection of standard mechanical components. Design of Jigs and fixtures is also introduced. Design exercises and real projects are to be conducted during the course teaching. Student Handbook-Information and Guidelines-2015 Page 6
7 MET 226 WELDING TECHNOLOGY This course explores the knowledge and skills in welding technology. It employes a wide range of practical work in the area of shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), oxy-acetylene welding/cutting (OAW), resistance welding, brazing, specialized air-plasma cutting, gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) processes. Lab Facilities The Mechanical Maintenance Technology Program (MMTP) and Manufacturing Technology Program (MTP) have various laboratories and workshops available for conducting experiments and hands-on skills training in: 1. Computer Aided Drafting and Design Laboratories 2. Mechanical Measurements Laboratory 3. Material Testing Laboratory 4. Applied Mechanics Laboratory 5. Equipment Troubleshooting and Maintenance Workshop 6. Machine Tools Operations (Mechanical) Workshop 7. Welding Technology Workshops 8. Plant Maintenance and Bench Fitting Workshops 9. Drafting Rooms 10. CAD/CAM and Robotics MET Club Mechanical Engineering Technology Department has a well-established club for students to express their creative talents and share their innovative ideas with other students and community at large. The major aims of this club are to: Enhance the hidden passion for creativity. Support the curiosity to learn new technologies. Learn to work as a team of students with different calibers. Improve communication skills. Acquire knowledge and skills in multidisciplinary areas of engineering technology and put into practice. All students are requested to join and actively participate in the activities of the club.
