London Pre-Arranged Housing for Spring 2016 October 2015 Syracuse University Abroad offers a pre-arranged housing option for students participating in the London program. The flats are located in Kamen House in the heart of the University district, the Clerkenwell neighborhood of London, near Farringdon tube station and within a twenty minute walk to Faraday House. SU Abroad has negotiated an agreement with a London-based company, Anglo Educational Services, to provide this housing. To view some pictures of what a typical pre-arranged flat will look like in Kamen House please go here. While the cost of these flats carries a $1,595 surcharge, making the total program fee $8,695, the two main advantages to students are that they will not have to look for housing upon their arrival in London, and this is a ready-made solution for students. If there is more demand than space, we will have a lottery to assign spots. In previous semesters, we have been able to accommodate most students interested in pre-arranged housing. Students not interested in pre-arranged housing or those that aren t selected in the housing lottery will find their own apartments in London with a briefing, listings, and guidance and support from the London staff. Please note that the flats are not all the same, but the room size is British, and smaller than American student housing might be. Smoking within the flats is not permitted, and overnight guests are not permitted due to fire regulations. The furnished flats provide: accommodations for 4 or 6 people space for 40 students total (SU and visiting) bedrooms for 2 occupants 2 bathrooms a kitchen equipped to British standards a washing machine a set of bed linens (towels are not provided) a television in each apartment lounge one telephone line for incoming and outgoing phone calls. Students will not be able to charge outgoing phone calls to the phone in the apartment. For that purpose, students will need to use a long-distance calling card. broadband internet (wireless) with some restrictions. Each student is given a data allowance. Also included in the housing: Utilities (i.e. gas, electricity and water) Weekly cleaning of the apartment including a change of bed linen. (Individuals may be allergic to cleaning solutions or to pest control sprays used in the flats). Maintenance for the apartments (including but not limited to plumbing, heating, appliances and fixtures) 24 hour housing emergency contact Beyond the semester tuition and program fee charges, students selecting the pre-arranged housing option must pay an additional $1,595 fee which will be added to their Bursar bill for a total program fee of $8,695. Also a security deposit of $600 is required. The University will process the check received for the security deposit and return it (or a portion thereof) only after the apartment is cleared and deemed undamaged by Anglo Educational Services. This may take four to six weeks after the end of the semester. If for any reason students do not receive a placement in pre-arranged housing, and have paid the security deposit, the University will coordinate the return of the deposit and the contract will become null and void. Note: Students finding their own housing also have to pay a security deposit on their flats, typically equal to one month s rent.

Please note that neither Syracuse University nor Anglo Educational Services carries insurance on students personal items. We strongly urge all students to obtain the appropriate insurance coverage for personal items that may be lost due to theft or damage while abroad. If more than forty students apply for the pre-arranged housing, assignments will be made through a lottery drawing for all students who have filed the necessary papers by October 23. The lottery will be held after the due date. Students who submit an application after the due date will be considered on a space available basis. Contact Gail Rich (gnrich@syr.edu) to check on availability. Interested students must: 1. Log in to your application, complete and submit the Pre-Arranged Housing Request post acceptance form. 2. Provide a check made payable to Syracuse University in the amount of $600, to cover the security deposit. The $1,595 housing supplement will be added to your bill. 3. Complete and return a Housing Accommodation Agreement form, which must be signed by the student and each parent or legal guardian. We will accept faxed copies of the first page and the last page with the parent/guardian signature. Fax to the attention of Gail Rich at 315/443-4593 or scan and email it to gnrich@syr.edu. SU students can drop them off at the office. 4. Submit all materials to arrive by October 23 to: Syracuse University Abroad 106 Walnut Place Syracuse, NY 13244 Attn. Gail Rich Note: The Housing Accommodation Agreement form is available to print here. If you wish to request a roommate(s), be sure to include the name(s) of students with whom you would like to share a flat on your housing request form. All students involved must list all of the same names in order to be eligible for being housed together. The information you provide on the housing form will be used to place you, although all preferences cannot be guaranteed. After the due date we will confirm by email if you were selected for pre-arranged housing and your flat assignment. If we are unable to provide housing due to lack of space, the security deposit will be returned. If you are placed in pre-arranged housing and withdraw from the housing or the London program after November 9, you will still be responsible for paying the full cost of pre-arranged housing of $6,595, unless another student is found to occupy the flat. One of the forty one spaces is reserved for a student liaison. The liaison serves as an important link in the communication network between fellow residents and the London Program staff. The liaison is selected based on past resident advisor or camp-counselor experience, maturity and the ability to handle responsibility. In exchange for this position, Syracuse University waives the additional $1,595 housing fee. If you are interested in applying to be the liaison, please mark the box on the housing request form, complete the liaison application and send it to or drop it off at 106 Walnut Place, or e-mail it to Gail Rich at gnrich@syr.edu. Please include a resume. For further information, contact Gail Rich (gnrich@syr.edu) at 1-800/235-3472 or 315/443-9431 at the Syracuse University Abroad office.

Independent housing offers a taste of authentic London life. 04 HOUSING sulondon.syr.edu

Independent Housing There is a housing team in the Program Office with plenty of experience to help students find their own accommodation in London. Syracuse University London will provide as much assistance as possible, but students retain the responsibility for the contracts they undertake with independent landlords. The cost of independent housing depends on the type and location of accommodation that is selected. Utilities and local council tax might be included in the price and should be negotiated before signing a contract. A housing allowance is calculated and issued on a prepaid card in two installments, at the start of the term and after mid-semester break. You will normally need to share a room to keep within the housing allowance. You will probably have to pay a security deposit, normally the equivalent of one month s rent per person and you must budget for this yourself. Finding accommodation away from central London can be a cheaper option, but most listings are in Zone 1. Staying in independent housing allows students to choose their roommates, as well as the type of accommodation and area they want to live in. However, please note that affordable shortterm accommodation will not necessarily be available in your preferred area. Most accommodation should include wireless Internet access, as well as other amenities like televisions, washing machines and telephones. Restrictions Individual landlords might have their own regulations that must be adhered to. sulondon.syr.edu HOUSING 05
