Introduction The Smappee monitor is a device that measures the energy consumption of your electrical appliances with one sensor close to the breaker panel. The sensor is clamped around the mains cable and records the energy use. The various devices are recognized by their energy signature or the electrical traces they leave. If you have solar panels, you can also use the Smappee monitor to measure the energy generated. The Smappee monitor is installed close to the breaker panel. It then starts measuring your energy consumption and the yield of your solar panels as well as communicating with your smartphone or tablet. The Smappee app gives you direct insight in your energy consumption, energy costs and the yield of your solar panels. To save on energy costs and contribute to a greener environment, you can take on energy guzzlers and standby power. This manual describes the installation of the Smappee monitor. All information about the Wi-Fi configuration of the Smappee monitor and the use of the Smappee app can be found in the Smappee User Manual. Page 2 of 11
Safety Instructions Safety Warning Working on your electrical installation can be dangerous. The Installation shall be done by a certified electrician. Safety precautions Please observe the following safety precautions in order to avoid potential electrical shock, fire or personal injury: Do not use this product for any purpose other than for which it was intended. Do not open the equipment or touch any of its electronic circuitry. Do not attempt to repair or service any part of the Smappee monitor. Only use the cables which were delivered with the product. Do not use the product if damaged. Do not use damaged current clamp cables. Do not immerse the product in water, or any other liquids. Do not expose the product to heat, flame, steamy conditions or extreme cold. Do not open the equipment or touch any of its electronic circuitry. Maintenance Clean only the outside with a dry, clean cloth. Do not use abrasive agents or solvents. Connecting the Smappee Monitor The next sections describe how to install the Smappee monitor on your breaker panel. The sections provide instructions for houses without and with solar panels: Installations without Solar Panels, continue on page 5 Installations with Solar Panels, continue on page 7 The instructions apply to 1-phase homes only. For 3-phase installations, please contact the Smappee helpdesk. Note! Before you install the Smappee monitor you need to first connect it to your Wi-Fi network as described in the Smappee user manual. Installations without Solar Panels The following instructions describe the installation steps for single phase households without solar power. Preconditions: You have successfully connected your Smappee monitor to your Wi-Fi network (you see a green heartbeat). Steps 1. Switch the power off to your home using the main breaker. This is usually the largest switch in your meter cabinet. 2. Install the current transformers (CT) on the mains cables as shown below. Please pay attention to the direction: The arrow (L) needs to point towards the breaker panel. Page 5 of 11
3. Now connect the two ends of the CT in port 1 & 3 of Smappee. Result is shown below. 4. Close the lid of the main breaker. Switch the power to your home back on. 5. Plug the Smappee power cable into the nearest available power outlet and wait until Smappee shows, again, the green heartbeat. Note: A red light is an indication of a weak Wi-Fi signal. 6. You can now get started with your smartphone App. Page 6 of 11
Installations with Solar Panels The following instructions describe the installation steps for households with solar power (single phase). Preconditions: You have successfully connected your Smappee monitor to your Wi-Fi network (you see a green heartbeat). Steps 1. Switch the power off to your home using the main breaker. This is usually the largest switch in your meter cabinet. 2. Disconnect the power supply of your solar panels. 3. Install the current transformers (CT) on the mains cables in opposite direction of each other: on one CT, the arrow (L), points towards the breaker panel, on the other CT, the arrow (L), points towards the utility meter. 4. Click both ends of the CT in the Y-cable. Make sure the lock points in the correct direction 5. Now put the Y cable coming from the Mains on input 1 of the Smappee. 6. Solar Inverter the mains cables. Page 8 of 11

9. Close the lid of the main breaker. Switch the power back on. 10. Plug the Smappee power cable into the nearest available power outlet and wait until Smappee shows, again, the green heartbeat.
