Post Specification Post Title: Research Fellow Mucosal Immunity Post Status: Fixed Term (full-time); 2 years Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research Department/School: (AMBER) / School of Biochemistry and Immunology Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin Location: Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin Reports to: Principal Investigator, Dr. Ed Lavelle Appointment will be made on the appropriate point Salary: of the SFI Team Member Scale for Post-Doctoral Researchers (level 2A) depending on experience Closing Date and Time: 12 Noon on Friday 12 th February 2016 Post Summary Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position to conduct research as part of the Principal Investigator s research programme on mucosal vaccines. Vaccine research is undergoing a phase of expansion due to the need for new vaccines to combat existing, emerging, and drug resistant infections. While significant recent progress has been made in the identification of novel antigens from a number of pathogens, there is an urgent need for new, effective adjuvants to induce protective immune responses and to facilitate mucosal vaccine delivery. In this Science Foundation Ireland funded programme, we will investigate a novel adjuvanted capsule based system for oral vaccination. Our novel oral vaccine delivery strategy enables the protection of antigens from gastrointestinal proteolysis and the co-delivery of antigens and adjuvants to the 1

2 intestinal tract to promote enhanced mucosal and systemic immune responses. This approach has the potential to enhance the effectiveness of non-living oral vaccines for diseases including cholera, ETEC and Helicobacter pylori. Standard duties and Responsibilities of the Post Carrying out mucosal vaccination studies and assessment of antigen-specific immunity. Evaluation of adjuvant-induced innate immunity and investigating the roles of key cytokines. Writing research papers and reviews. Presentation of data at lab meetings, site reviews and national and international meetings. Funding Information This post is funded by Science Foundation Ireland through the AMBER Centre, grant number 12/RC/2278. Person Specification Qualifications PhD in Immunology, Biochemistry or a related discipline (Essential). Knowledge & Experience (Essential & Desirable) Previous experience in innate immunity, vaccine research or infection models would be a significant advantage. In particular experience in oral/mucosal vaccines would be of benefit. Skills & Competencies The candidate should have excellent oral and written communication ability.

Strong organisational and interpersonal skills are required as the successful candidate will work as an integral member of the team and in collaboration with our industrial partners. AMBER strives to deliver internationally leading materials research that is industrially and clinically informed with outputs including new discoveries and devices in ICT, medical device and industrial technology sectors. AMBER has a strong emphasis on linking industry to research programmes, to develop products that directly impact quality of life, such as the development of the next generation computer chips or new medical implants and pharmaceuticals that improve patient care. AMBER brings together Ireland s leading material science researchers working across the disciplines 3

4 of Physics, Chemistry, Bioengineering and Medicine; with an international network of collaborators and companies. AMBER has also been highly successful in obtaining non-exchequer funding (e.g. from European Union Framework Programmes) that enabled the establishment of an extensive academic partnership network involving over 100 universities in Europe and 160 universities globally. Department Summary The School of Biochemistry and Immunology is a collegial and dynamic community of researchers and our mission is to create a rich educational experience for our undergraduates, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. We conduct our research at the highest level of excellence and our primary objective is to discover the fundamental mechanisms that underlie human disease. The School has particular strength in immunology and neuroscience, two of the seven major College research pillars. The School provides an exciting interdisciplinary environment in which to do research and it is recognised internationally as a leading centre for immunology, cell biology, metabolism, cancer, drug development, neurobiology, and structural biology. Our success in these areas is complemented by our substantial investment in cutting-edge facilities for nuclear magnetic resonance, protein crystallization, X- ray crystallography, transgenics, histochemistry, electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, and fluorescent activated cell sorting. The school has undergone considerable growth in recent years and currently comprises 29 active research groups with 34m in research funding, 83 PhD students and 65 postdoctoral researchers. During the period 2007-2011, researchers in the School raised over 21m in research funding, authored over 450 research papers and filed 25 patents. 50 of these research papers were published in journals with impact factor greater than 20.

The School of Biochemistry & Immunology is located in a newly built 24000m2 research & teaching facility. In this state-of-the-art facility, researchers are also working alongside industry in industry-academic collaborative and commercial labspace. This intersectoral approach aims to push the boundaries of discovery by promoting the translation of basic research discoveries into therapies and treatment. Five new campus companies have emerged from our research discoveries and are based in the School of Biochemistry & Immunology. Research funding has been obtained from Science Foundation Ireland, N.I.H., the Human Frontiers Research Programme, Enterprise Ireland, the Health Research Board, EC FP7, the Wellcome Trust and from pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin Founded in 1592, Trinity is at the nexus of tradition and innovation, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across 24 schools and three faculties: arts, humanities, and social sciences; engineering, maths and science; and health sciences. Spread across 47 acres in Dublin s city centre, Trinity s 17,000-strong student body comes from all 32 counties of Ireland, and 16% of students come from outside the country.
