A little bit of History It s not new http://www.mobic.com/oldnews/2000/07/sa p_and_motorola_team_to_extend_.htm

A little bit of History (cont d) Nothing really happened for almost a decade Unless you consider scanning a barcode in the warehouse mobility... Reasons Bandwidth was too low resulting in slow response time Cell phone coverage for WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) was weak Usability was not acceptable Devices were flip-phones at best with small character-based screens (essentially similar to the mainframe-green-screen before PC s) Use-cases were few, but they were pretty much the same as todays: CRM, Reporting and others such as Work Order Confirmation in PM, etc. Underlying WAP technology itself wasn t ready for prime time

A little bit of History (cont d) It s new (again) Devices now allow mobile computing like never before Usability is great and accepted by end-users Mobile device sales outperforms PC sales Bandwidth (3G, 4G, etc.) now allows fast data access, even video streaming Wireless hotspots are widely available Applications are available SAP founded a Mobility Center of Excellence

A little bit of History (cont d) Now maybe one screen of your Executive s ipad already looks like this

Three (hundred) questions What Who / Where Technology Reporting? Workflow? Alerts? CRM? Accounts Payable? From shop-floor to top floor? Executives? Field Sales Organization? Our Plant Maintenance force? Receiving dock? Mobile Platform (MEAP)? Devices? Apps (buy or build)? Security? SAP App Store? Barcode scanning? CoA s, MSDS s? Does email belong here? In China? Future Proof

A better list Top 10 Questions before you start Mobility What business processes should be mobilized? Priority? What existing business applications are involved (SAP ERP, BI, etc.)? Who will be involved (IT, Business, Partner)? How many end-users? Will we establish a device standard? What s the mobile platform technology? What are the target countries for deployment? What mobile data plans are in place? How are we supporting end-users, how will APP upgrades be handled? Device Management Plan: How to commission and de-commission devices? Security and access policy? How are we funding such an initiative?

A few answers On Mobile Enterprise Application Platform (MEAP): Gartner s rule of three can help -a MEAP offers significant advantages in three situations: When there are 3 or more mobile applications When there are 3 or more targeted operating systems or platforms When they involve the integration of 3 or more back-end systems Stick to as few devices and as few operating systems as possible. Complexity will get huge if you allow a diversified device and OS structure. If you are a global player, this will be a challenge A lot of answers will be It depends..., i.e. consulting will be needed

One of SAP s answers
