Rugby World Cup From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 04/06/2007 The Rugby World Cup trophy, the Webb Ellis Cup. The Rugby World Cup is organized by the International Rugby Board (IRB), and is contested by the men's national teams. The inaugural tournament was held in 1987, hosted by both Australia and New Zealand, and is now contested every four years. The winners are awarded the William Webb Ellis Cup, named after the Rugby School pupil credited with the game's invention. The tournament is one of the largest international sporting competitions in the world. The title of world champion is currently held by England, who won the 2003 tournament held in Australia. The next Rugby World Cup will be hosted in France during September and October of 2007 Tournament Twenty nations play four pool games, playing their respective pool members once. A nation will gain four points for a win and two points if they draw. Bonus points can be gained through scoring four tries in a match or by losing by a margin of seven points or fewer. Total points determine overall pool positions, based on cumulative match points. If a match results in a tie during the pool phase, it will be a draw (two points each). I The winner (first position) and runner-up (second position) of each pool enters the knock-out stage. The knock-out stage consists of quarter and semi-finals, and then the final. Losers of the semi-finals contest for third place (called the 'Bronze Final'). If a tie results during an event in the knock-out stages, the winner is determined through extra time and as a last resort, a kicking competition. Hosting The 2007 World Cup will be hosted by France, with additional venues at Edinburgh and Cardiff. France won the right to host the 2007 World Cup in 2003, and it was subsequently announced that four matches would be held in Wales, Cardiff. Two Pool C matches are being held in Scotland, Edinburgh The French venues are the same as those used for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. There are around 6,000 volunteers who will help organise the competition. Organisers and volunteers gathered at Disneyland Resort Paris on March 18 to mark the start of the rugby celebrations. Also present on the day were members of the victorious French 2007 Six Nations champions team.
