Certification Required Texas Education Code Section 21.003 CERTIFICATION REQUIRED. (a) A person may not be employed as a teacher, teacher intern or teacher trainee, librarian, educational aide, administrator, educational diagnostician, or counselor by a school district unless the person holds an appropriate certificate or permit. 3

TEA Login TEAL Educators and entities must set up a new TEAL account to log in to the Educator Certification Online System (ECOS) TEAL is a more secure login portal for ECOS. Your Name in TEAL must match the name in ECOS and your picture ID card, such as a driver s license Educators must request access to ECOS for Educators. Entity users must request access to ECOS for Entities. 5
Applying for Certification After establishing a TEAL account, educators must create or update an ECOS profile. ECOS is where educators and entities: Apply for Certificates and Permits Check the Status of a Certificate or Permit View Examinations Taken View and Print a Copy of a Certificate or Permit NOTE: TEA no longer prints or mails certificates. 6

Career and Technical Education CTE certificates are meant for assignments where students are preparing for specific occupations. Some CTE certificates require prior wageearning experience and licensure. Some CTE certificates do not require prior wage-earning experience or licensure. 18
Trade and Industrial Education With a degree 3 years of wage-earning experience earned within the past 8 years Without a degree 5 years of wage-earning experience earned within the past 8 years In some cases, an occupational license is required, such as in cosmetology or law enforcement. An educator preparation program must be completed. 19

Educational Aides TAC Chapter 230, Subchapter E - An individual employed in a Texas school district as an educational aide must be certified by the SBEC. Educational Aide I, II, or III based on qualifications and duties of the position Aide applies online and is recommended by the employing school district. A valid Texas classroom teaching certificate is acceptable for an educational aide assignment. 25
