Introduction The LL.M. in intellectual property law provides a wide-ranging and focused knowledge of the IP theory and practice. Besides the onsite teaching, video conferencing, e-learning and distance learning activities are being used. The 21st century marks a new era as our economies increasingly rely on knowledge-based production processes and services. Consequently, the institutions Christophe Geiger, Ph.D. Course Director, General Director of the Center for International Intellectual Property Studies, University of Strasbourg (France) responsible for education and research in the field of intellectual property law in Europe must provide appropriate training for staff from the respective professional environments to acquire or reinforce their ability to initiate, control, protect, exploit and increase the value of intangible assets. The knowledge-based economy integrates research and development activities, innovation, industrialization and the marketing of products and services including intangible assets and completely changes the enterprise management. It creates new professions specialized in dealing with intangible assets: this branch of law attracts consultants and Goce Naumovski, Ph.D. Programme Chairman, Iustinianus Primus Law Faculty, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje (Macedonia) intellectual property experts from among managers, jurists and lawyers. Every innovation process generated by new economic activities assumes the intervention of the law, the installation of tools and Mirjana Akimovska-Polenak, Ph.D. Tempus Project Coordinator, Iustinianus Primus Law Faculty, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje (Macedonia) structures for developing or planning in order to control the intangible assets and to optimize their valorization. The studies are established within the Tempus project 144582-2008, financed by the European Commission. 3

4 About the programme The students can earn 60 or 120 credits (ECTS) depending on their preferences and educational background. Upon successful completion, two diplomas will be issued: a LL.M. Diploma from the Iustinianus Primus Faculty of Law, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje (Macedonia) and a Diplôme d'université (DU) from the Centre for International Intellectual Property Studies, University of Strasbourg, (France). The reasons for establishment of the programme emerged from the urgent need for graduate education (Master studies in Intellectual Property Law) in the region of South Eastern Europe as indispensible tool to professionals in achievement of intellectual property rights (IPRs) protection appropriate to EU standards. The present situation is associated with a high degree of IPRs infringement and piracy, although the legislation is in accordance with the EU legislation. The studies take place at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje, Iustinianus Primus Faculty of Law. The European Intellectual Property Institutes Network (EIPIN), which is composed of: l Centre for International Intellectual Property (CEIPI) at the University of Strasbourg; l Magister Lucentinvs at the University of Alicante; l Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute London, and l Munich Intellectual Property Law Center (MIPLC), LL.M. Programme, participates in the programme by providing visiting professors and scholars with outstanding expertise in IP teaching. Students that will graduate at the studies are expected to implement their knowledge in their work as IPRs professionals (in companies, enforcement agencies, judiciary, IP agents etc.) and deal with various aspects of intellectual properties rights protection. The project is expected to achieve higher degree of IPRs protection and reduction of infringement cases, as well as higher awareness for the importance of intellectual property.
