WE NEED A NEW DEFINITION OF SUCCESS In health care, we ve spent too much time measuring what we do instead of measuring the results we achieve. Right now, we rely on process measures to define high-quality health care. But patients want to know how they ll feel and what they will be able to do after care, not about the guidelines their physicians and care teams follow. To answer them, we need to change how we define success. If we focus on outcomes, we can help patients truly understand the impact of their treatments. We can answer questions such as, Will I have long-term pain? and Will I be able to participate in normal activities? This approach also improves our health care system in several key ways.
OUTCOMES ENCOURAGE INNOVATION Health care is very complex and medical knowledge is changing fast. That s why it s important that physicians constantly seek new ways to provide better care. A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH Patients and their care providers have the same goal: to achieve the best medical outcomes. Measuring outcomes in a standardized way will lead us there. That s why we re bringing together international physician leadership and patients to help us identify outcomes standards. Here s how our process is unique. COMPREHENSIVE SET OF POTENTIAL OUTCOMES PATIENT PERSPECTIVE PERSPECTIVE PROVIDER PRIORITIZE Relevance to patients REGISTRY PERSPECTIVE Over a period of six to eight months, the ICHOM Working Group uses a structured process to agree on a Standard Set of outcomes and risk factors, along with their accompanying definitions. WE CREATE A PHYSICIAN- PATIENT PARTNERSHIP We involve patients directly in the process. After all, they re the ones who experience outcomes firsthand. All of our patient representatives have been treated for the condition they are evaluating.

We provide a structured process that welcomes the diverse opinions of the Working Group members while still achieving consensus over time. After outcomes and measures are defined, a similar process follows to identify an accompanying set of initial conditions and risk factors and their definitions. THOUGHT LEADERS Our approach is built on the framework of Value-Based Health Care developed at Harvard Business School by Professor Michael E. Porter. In 2006, Porter and his colleague, Elizabeth Teisberg, wrote the groundbreaking book, Redefining Health Care, which outlines the argument for using health out comes data to shift the nature of competition in health care toward value for patients. ROOTED IN STRATEGY One of our founding organizations, The Boston Consulting Group, was the first to introduce competitive strategy to the business world. Their team brings more than 50 years of experience, a professional culture, and a rigorous approach. GROUNDED IN THEORY Our tie to the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden provides us with a strong foundation in medicine and research. This world-renowned medical university and research center is leading the way in health care discoveries. Every year, the Karolinska Institutet appoints the laureates for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. MICHAEL E. PORTER STEFAN LARSSON MARTIN INGVAR Michael E. Porter is the Bishop William Lawrence University Professor at Harvard Business School. He is recognized as a global leader in strategy and competition, and brings more than two decades of experience developing the Value Framework for health care. Stefan Larsson is Senior Partner and Managing Director at The Boston Consulting Group, and is head of the firm s global health provider and payer sector. In addition, he is a group fellow at The Boston Consulting Group, and leads the firm s research on the impact and implementation of value-based health care. Martin Ingvar is a Professor of Integrative Medicine at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience and at the Osher Centre for Integrative Medicine at Karolinska Institute. He also heads Karolinska s groundbreaking initiatives in value-based health care in close cooperation with the regional government.
