SURFACE CHALLENGES Underground solutions Worldwide there is a quest for urban space driven by the increasing urbanization. According to the ITACUS white paper (2010) more than half of the world s population lives in urban areas. The challenges are numerous and availability of space for necessary infrastructure is crucial. The underground is at present only marginally utilized. The potential for extended and improved utilization is enormous. Surface challenges Underground solutions is more than a slogan; for ITA-AITES and its members it is a challenge and commitment to contribute to sustainable development. 2
