Developing Radar to Understand and Manage External Risks General Session B: 9:45-11 am External risks can often be the biggest wild card that your company faces. While some of these can be monitored on an ongoing basis and risk responses developed, others seem to gain momentum quickly and overtake the business environment in unexpected ways. For example, New York City s 2006 regulation eliminating trans-fats in all commercially served food has had major ripple effects on the food and food service industries. But the reach of this kind of decision may extend beyond those areas. Longer term, health care providers and insurers could well be impacted by this type of trend. We will focus on the ripple effects of these decisions, how ERM can help companies focus on both impact and likelihood of these risks and how companies can effectively respond. Panelists Douglas W. Brooks (New York) Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Equitable Life of Canada Ellen R. Dulberger (New York & San Diego) Vice President, Enterprise Risk Management IBM Corporation John Fraser (San Diego) Vice President Internal Audit and Chief Risk Officer Hydro One Networks Inc Mitch Melfi (New York & San Diego) Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Officer Catholic Health Initiatives To register today, call Customer Service at 212 339 0345

Many companies and practitioners believe that to start ERM, a company must follow a proscribed path, beginning with a comprehensive risk inventory, moving onto risk assessment and drilling into those risks that rise to the top of the pile. While that approach has certainly worked for many companies, others struggle to enable ERM to gain a toe-hold within their organizations. Any number of ways to begin ERM may be available to you, and may help you to get quick wins and build buy-in. This workshop is designed to identify what those opportunities may be at your company. Options include: Taking a deep dive into a specific risk Solving a problem in a specific business unit Visioning Building on existing risk management excellence and capabilities Workshop Leader Craig Faris Director Enterprise Risk Consulting Oliver Wyman, Inc. Through a practical case study approach, this workshop will help attendees to better understand available software, analysis that is appropriate and analysis that helps to drive better use of resources for allocating capital.
