Other ways to understand coaching When I was a graduate student about 50 years ago, I thought of opening a storefront office in the South Side of Chicago where I would advise people who walked in about how to get the most out of their lives. That dream has now been realized by the sudden growth of the coaching movement, especially its evidence-based branch. I do think that empirically-grounded coaching can be very helpful. The dangers lie, as in all endeavors of this kind, in promising too much, in extending beyond the knowledge base, and in becoming rigid and territorial. (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, 2007)

Evidence-based Coaching is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in delivering coaching to clients, and in designing and teaching coach training programs (Grant & Stober, 2007) Evidence-based decision making Critical thinking & Optimistic cynicism! NOT Optimistic optimism

Coaching is about Self-regulation Set a Goal Develop an Action Plan Act Change (if necessary) Monitor (requires Self-Reflection) Evaluate (associated with Insight) Success

Coaching is about the Normal population
