OTTAWA ONLINE PLS-40300 Leadership in Law Enforcement Course Description Analysis of effective leadership in law enforcement by examining critical skills, knowledge and traits required to succeed at all levels within law enforcement. Emphasis placed on practices of exemplary law enforcement leaders including transforming organizational visions to applications. This is a fully online, eight-week course. We will not meet face-to-face at any time. Course Prerequisites None. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Analyze the skills law enforcement officers learn in the police academy and in their first year on the job that prepare them for leadership roles. Compare and contrast leadership and management. Analyze the five fundamental practices of exemplary leadership: challenging the process, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, modeling the way and encouraging the heart. Explain groupthink, its causes and its impact on effective problem solving and decision-making. Analyze the characteristics of admired leaders and their impact on a leader's credibility and success. Describe three ways to learn how to lead: trial and error, observing people, and education and training. Explain the situational leadership model and its value to law enforcement leaders. Explain employee empowerment and its role in law enforcement organizations. ISBN: 0787902691 Course Assignment Descriptions You will have several opportunities to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the principles taught in this course. The primary means of evaluating your work will be through practical application of the material. Discussion Forum (160 points total 6 postings per week @ 20 points per week) Initial Substantive Posts: Submit an initial response to each of the prompts provided each week by your instructor. Your initial post should be substantive (approximately ½ of a page in length) and must be posted by midnight, Central Time by Wednesday of each week. In your substantive post you are encouraged to use references (you may use your textbook); show evidence of critical thinking as it applies to the concepts or prompt and/or use examples of the application of the concepts to work and life. Proper punctuation, grammar and correct spelling are expected. Required Replies: You must reply to at least two different peers per prompt. Your replies should build on the concept discussed, offer a question to consider, or add a differing perspective, etc. Rather than responding with, "Good post," explain why the post is "good" (why it is important, useful, insightful, etc.). Or, if you disagree, respectfully share your alternative perspective. Just saying "I agree" or "Good idea" is not sufficient for the posts you would like graded. Posting Guidelines: Overall, postings must be submitted on at least two separate days of the week. It is strongly recommended you visit the discussion forum throughout the week to read and respond to your peers postings. You are encouraged to post more than the required number of replies. (Please review the Policies section of Blackboard for further details.) Executive Interview (140 points) Interview an executive that is viewed as a successful leader in a law enforcement organization. At the conclusion of the interview, you will prepare a detailed summary of the interview. The paper should include: An overview of the person s current area of responsibility A brief overview of the person s background to include experience, education and leadership training The most important things leaders do for their organizations The most important things the person you are interviewing does for his/her organization How effective your interviewee is as a leader and what he/she bases that upon What your interviewee learned at the police academy that has helped him/her as a leader The most effective way your interviewee learned to lead others experience, education, 2 of 6

watching others, and/or mentoring /coaching Additionally, you should ask and report on 3-5 of your own questions. Executive Interview (140 points) - Continued Your completed papers will be posted for everyone in the class to read, so please keep that in mind as you write your paper. The purpose in that is to share the ideas and philosophies of as many leaders as possible so that you might learn from others and benefit from their experience. This assignment is due at the end of the fourth week of class. Personal Leadership Action Plan (250 points) Prepare a comprehensive leadership development plan that should incorporate much of what you have learned throughout this course. Your action plan should address the following areas: 1. Identify your personal leadership style or philosophy (i.e., Theory X, situational leadership, country club style, etc.). You are not limited to the material covered in this lesson or in your course text. However, if you use something from outside this course, please provide some background on it. After you identify your style, you should explain why you prefer it and provide two examples of how you have successfully used it in the past. Your response should be covered on a separate, single-spaced page, and it should not exceed one page. If, as a result of this course, you have decided to change your approach to leadership, respond to the previous directive and add a separate page to explain why you wish to change and what you hope to accomplish in the process. 2. For each of the top four characteristics of admired leaders, you should assess your strengths and weaknesses for each one. You should provide specific examples that validate your assessment. You should explain how you plan to put your strengths to good use within your organization. Then you should provide specific actions on how you plan to address your weaknesses. It is recommended that you refer to your text for specific examples. Each characteristic will be listed on a separate page, and should not exceed two pages strengths on one page, weaknesses on the other. 3. For each of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leaders, you should assess your strengths and weaknesses for each one. You should provide specific examples that validate your assessment. You should explain how you plan to put your strengths to good use within your organization. Then you should provide specific actions on how you plan to address your weaknesses. You are required to discuss the two commitments for each practice using some of the book s recommended actions to demonstrate strengths or supplement weaknesses. Each practice should be limited to two pages. As a reminder, this plan will account for 45% of your overall grade. This assignment will be a lot of work and must be completed by the end of class. Therefore, you should begin immediately, starting with a meeting with your supervisor or mentor. This is suggested so that you can get his/her support and input right from the very beginning of this assignment. If you have any questions or problems, contact your instructor as they arise. Do not wait until the final week to raise any issues as it will make it difficult to complete this critical assignment on time. 3 of 6

Editorial Format for Written Papers All written assignments are to follow the APA writing style guidelines for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. This online course includes information regarding the APA style under Writing and Research Resources in the Resource Room on the course menu in Blackboard. Ottawa Online Late Policy With instructor approval, assignments may be accepted for up to one week after the due date, but a minimum automatic deduction of 10% of the points will be assessed. The instructor also has the option of increasing this deduction percentage up to a maximum of 20%. Extenuating circumstances may be determined on rare occasions and an extension allowed without a deduction, but only at the sole discretion of the instructor. Discussion board postings will not be accepted for credit when posted after the close of the discussion week. There are no exceptions to this rule; however, solely at the discretion of the instructor, the student may be allowed to submit an alternative assignment to make up for the points under extenuating circumstances. If granted, this should be an exception to the rule. No assignments will be accepted after the last day of the course (end of term) unless arrangements have been made and approved by the instructor at least one week in advance. Saving Work It is recommended that you save all of your work from this course on your own computer or flash drive.
