1 Department of Business HROB*4010 DE Foundations of Leadership Winter 2014 Instructor: Professor M. Bowring Room: J.D. MacLachlan Building, room Office Hours: TBD and by appointment Course Description and Objectives: HROB*4010 is the capstone course for the Undergraduate Certificate in Leadership. It is intended as a vehicle for you to integrate knowledge previously acquired from classroom and work experience rather than for the presentation of substantially new material. Throughout HORB*4010, students will demonstrate an understanding of how the leadership theories learned in UNIV*2000/BUS*2010/HROB*2010, the material from three approved electives and the approved 120 hours of leadership activity have enhanced their leadership capability now and into the future. As a final assignment, students will build upon the Personal Leadership Plan (PLP) written in UNIV2000/BUS2010/HROB2010 to develop a leadership action plan (LAP) that can guide their leadership development over the next two years. At the end of this course, you should be able to: Integrate and apply previously learned leadership theories and concepts to real-life and simulated situations and/or persons. (Work experience essay, discussions, media project) Analyse and critically reflect on your own leadership experiences and expectations (work experience essay, LAP). Develop a leadership action plan to guide your leadership development over the next two years (LAP) Course Prerequisites: UNIV*2000/BUS*2010/HROB*2010, 3 Approved Electives, 120 Hours of approved Leadership experience and instructor consent. 1

2 Some students will have completed only 80 hours of leadership experience and provided a solid plan for completion of the outstanding hours by the end of the course. You must complete the full 120 hours before the end of this course in order to pass and receive the certificate. Course Materials and Resources: This course does not have a formal textbook. Any articles that form part of your reading will be available through the University of Guelph electronic resources at the library. Communication with the prof: The best way to reach me is by at mbowring@uoguelph.ca I check my regularly. You can reasonably expect a response from me within 48/72 hours, weekends and holidays excepted. I may also communicate with you via your central account <uoguelph.ca> from time to time. You are required to check this account on a regular basis. Please be advised that I will not edit my mailing list to your hotmail/yahoo etc. account anyone can set up an account under any name they wish in these domains and thus your privacy would not be assured if I responded to s originating from them. If you are having problems with any aspect of the course, please don t let things ride in the hope that they will sort themselves out on their own part of my responsibility is to help you achieve your learning objectives in this course. Come and see me and we can address your problem and help you find a solution. Course Philosophy and Approach: As mentioned above, this is a capstone course that focuses on integrating material that you ve learned in your previous certificate courses and work experience. It is therefore not my intention to introduce a lot of new material, although we will be using some material that will be more or less familiar to each of you at times. You will be working on developing your leadership using the tools, knowledge, models, insights and activities from the previous courses in the certificate program. The instructor s role is to act as coach/mentor in that process. You have studied leadership theory and disciplines related to leadership. You have also taken part in 120 hours of leadership application activity. HROB*4010 is designed around the philosophy that leaders optimize their use of self-knowledge when confronted with leadership opportunities and challenges. This course calls on all students to look inside themselves in new ways to make sense out of the courses and activities of the undergraduate Leadership Certificate experience. This will be accomplished through personal reflection, group discussions, one-on-one discussion with the professor and the development of a leadership action plan for the next two years. 2

3 This course provides students with a rare opportunity to stand back and reflect on all of the leadership initiatives they have participated in during the certificate program. The written and oral communications of students should demonstrate serious reflection on the meaning of all the leadership study/activities of the certificate, and most importantly, what this means to them at a personal level. I am available to discuss any aspect of the course with you electronically through the Ask the Prof discussion forum on Courselink. I will check that discussion board regularly and answer any questions that you pose there. If you have a question that you think might be of interest to the rest of the class, this is the place where you should post it. If your question is related to your own work only, then please me. 4 Assignment details: 1. Essay on leadership work experience - After you have completed the 120 hours of leadership work experience required for the certificate, you will write an essay that critically examines this experience in light of the academic work you have completed in BUS*2010/UNIV*2000 and the three electives. Details of this assignment are in the assignment instruction sheet. You must pass this assignment in order to receive the Leadership Certificate. 2. Leadership Action Plan - You are required to revisit the PLP you developed in BUS*2010/UNIV*2000/HROB*2010 and reflect on its contents from the perspective of a student finishing the leadership certificate process. Specific instructions are found in the LAP assignment worksheet. Your reflections on the PLP and your work experience will then form the basis for the Leadership Action Plan that you can use to develop your leadership over the next two years. Specific instructions for the LAP are found in the Leadership Action Plan Instruction sheet. Please note that the actual deliverable is the Leadership Action Plan. 3. Cultural Media Project - For this project you will create a presentation on the leadership lessons learned from a television show or movie. The instructor must approve your choice. Once a movie is chosen, it may not be chosen by another person. Full details for this assignment are on the media project instruction sheet. 4. Participation There are five separate course activities listed in the schedule above. For each of the activities, you will be required to complete a task and participate in a discussion on that task. The discussion is aimed at stimulating interaction and reflection on leadership among members of your group. Class members will be randomly assigned to groups comprising 10 students each, and each member of the group is expected to discuss the assigned question(s) (as indicated in the Course Units). Each student in the group is required to participate by providing a minimum of 2 discussion posts. The student s posts are to include (as a minimum) a response to the original posed question by the instructor, as well as one additional post in response to comments posed by one of your other group mates. In terms of substance, the main entry is to consist of a minimum of words, and should represent a substantive comment relative to the question being asked. In addition, the comment should reference back to material contained in the weekly reading, and any other supplemental information sources. All references should be credited. The second entry, in reflection of another group member s posting, should also be substantive with a well-articulated reflection (or argument) in reaction to the posted comment. In terms of timing sequence, the original question response should be completed by Wednesday evening 11:59 pm (at the latest), and a further informed reflection/opinion/argument to a post by another group member made by Sunday evening 11:59 pm. Second postings should be made to original posts that have not yet been replied to unless all initial posts have been replied to. In other words, do not simply respond to 4

5 Notes: one or two individual s comments on the board. The instructor will monitor the discussion on the board during the week and may also provide commentary for further consideration/contemplation by the group members. For grading purposes, the instructor will randomly select two sets of weekly discussion posts per student for marking in each half of the course, i.e. one from activity weeks 1 and 2 and then again, one from activity weeks 3, 4 or 5. The discussion board posts for each student will be marked out of 10%. By Winter Break, one weekly discussion board will be marked out of 10%, and this mark will be entered on the Courselink marks tab before activity week 3 begins. To complete the semester, again one set of weekly discussion board posts will be marked in the second half of the course, with a mark out of10% assigned by Week 12. Marks will be assigned on the quality of the discussion board entries with respect to answering the weekly question, moving the discussion along, providing insights and also in line with assignment requirements. Thus, your posts should be well thought out and argued with supportive information. Please note that assignments with a specific due date are due by 11:59 pm on the due date. They are to be submitted to the dropbox on Courselink which will serve as a time stamp to confirm when your assignment is handed in. Unless you have discussed an extension well ahead of the due date, late penalties of 5%/earned grade/day (including weekends) will be assigned. Extensions will only be granted on the basis of extenuating circumstances/compelling reasons. If you are registered with the Centre for Students with Disabilities and will require some form of accommodation in the completion of the required learning activities for this course, please let me know during the first week of classes. Keep a copy of all of your graded work until final marks have been recorded. You may be asked to resubmit your work at any time.
