Whether you want to grow in your career or simply expand your knowledge, the Graduate College at Texas State University-San Marcos can help. We offer nearly 100 specialized graduate degree programs that provide you with the opportunity to improve your life through advanced study, research and creative expression. Texas State has some of the best-known creative writing faculty in the country. The amount of time the faculty members spend working with the students is amazing. My first class here was with Tim O Brien, and he went above and beyond, helping me with my novel, reading rewrites and even extra chapters, and giving me detailed feedback. Saurabh Gupta Creative Writing Master s Student Future Bestselling Author The Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic at Texas State far surpassed my expectations, and the faculty has impressed me. The clinical supervisors amaze me with how much they know and their ability to give straightforward insight and advice for case management. By bringing all this talent together, I feel the communication disorders program will prepare me to be an independent and savvy clinician, and it will help me hit the ground running with a broad background of experience and resources. Rachel Marks Communication Disorders Master s Student Future Speech-Language Pathologist

I chose the graduate program in sociology at Texas State because it is one of the only applied research programs in the state. The faculty are the best. Two Convenient Locations Many of Texas State s graduate programs are offered at both our main campus in San Marcos and at the Round Rock Higher Education Center. Both are conveniently located near Austin, less than two miles from Interstate (IH) 35. University bus service between Austin and San Marcos and San Antonio and San Marcos is available for a small fee. Buses are equipped with wireless Internet access, so you can work while you ride to class. San Marcos Texas State University-San Marcos has overlooked downtown San Marcos for more than 100 years. With its tree-lined streets, 19th century homes and historic town square, San Marcos is steeped in history. But its central location 30 miles south of Austin and 50 miles north of San Antonio on the booming IH-35 corridor has made it a growing city that offers ever-increasing options for shopping, dining and recreation. Our hilly campus is home to 225 buildings. Some, like the redroofed, Victorian-style Old Main, are as old as the university itself. Others are cutting-edge facilities. The Mitte Complex houses a high-tech clean room in its microchip fabrication lab. McCoy Hall, with its corporate atmosphere, provides business students with high-tech classrooms, study rooms and even a stock-trading lab. Our Alkek Library is home to more than 1.4 million printed volumes as well as the Southwestern Writers Collection and Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican Photography. Known as the Wittliff Collections, the exhibits showcase rare artifacts and one of the world s most significant collections of Mexican contemporary photographic arts. Round Rock The Round Rock Higher Education Center is located just 20 miles north of Austin in Round Rock. Dating back to the 1850s, Round Rock has deep Texas roots. Today, Round Rock is known more as a bedroom community for those who work in Austin. In recent years, Round Rock has been named one of the nation s safest cities, one of the best communities for young people, and one of the best cities for relocating families. Round Rock is also home to the Dell computers headquarters and Nolan Ryan s AAA baseball club, the Round Rock Express. Classes at the Round Rock Higher Education Center are held in the Avery Building, completed in 2005. This four-story building houses 40 classrooms, five computer classrooms, two open computer labs and four computer lounges as well as a range of student and academic support services. To attend classes at the Round Rock Higher Education Center, you must first apply and be accepted to Texas State University, just as you would to enroll at our main campus in San Marcos. See www.rrhec.txstate.edu for details. The second-largest springs in Texas, home to several endangered species, are located on our campus. The location of the springs makes Texas State the site of world-class research related to the geography and biology of freshwater systems. Teacher Recruitment Program: Secondary Texas State University-San Marcos was founded as a teachers college in 1899, and more than a century later, it continues the tradition of producing only the highest-quality educators. The graduate Teacher Recruitment Program (TRP) in secondary education is designed to provide an accelerated pathway for well-qualified, post-baccalaureate students to earn an initial teaching certificate prior to the granting of the master s degree. TRP students have the option to complete the last 18 hours of the 36-hour master s program while earning an income from fulltime teaching; or students may postpone full-time teaching until the master s degree is complete, if they wish to do so. Since 2001, TRP students have entered teaching from all walks of life (attorneys, engineers, nurses, scientists, newspaper reporters, social workers, high-tech workers and more). They are now making substantial contributions to their school communities and to the children of Texas. A member of The Texas State University System

Course Work The 36-hour master of education (MEd) is structured so that the initial two long semesters of TRP offer a full-certification program including 18 hours of graduate course work and 14 weeks of student teaching. The course work may begin in either the fall or spring semesters. The first-semester classes are delivered at the Round Rock Higher Education Center and on-site in area public schools. The initial 18 hours of TRP provide a means for students to complete course work and fieldwork for initial teacher certification integrating theory and practice in the real-world context of public schools. A substantial portion of time during the initial 18 hours of course work is devoted to work in local area public schools and requires that TRP students attend three integrated daytime classes taught on public school campuses. The remaining 18 hours are designed to engage students in continued intellectual growth through advanced-level evening and summer course work to help students improve their practice, grow professionally and develop campus leadership skills. Due to its accelerated nature, a substantial portion of TRP requires a daytime commitment in public schools. Following completion of the initial 18-hour teacher certification portion of TRP, students are eligible to apply for state teacher certification; once certified, they may become employed as teachers while they complete their master s degrees. Admission Policy Applicants must meet the Texas State Graduate College s minimum GPA requirement of 2.75 for the last 60 hours of course work leading to the bachelor s degree. No GRE score is required. Applicants must also undergo a screening interview, written reflection and online survey. Program admission is competitive with no guarantees of admission. Each applicant must submit the following to the Graduate College at Texas State: attended, including community colleges fee for teacher certification only Applicants also must submit an online application to the Teacher Recruitment Program, including: professional references (no family members, please) for desiring a career in teaching (electronic document) Visit www.gradcollege.txstate.edu for access to an online application and additional details. Applications are due March 1 for the fall semester and October 1 for the spring semester. For access to the Teacher Recruitment Program online application and program details, visit www.education.txstate.edu/ci/ degrees-programs/graduate/teacher-recruitment-program/ application.html. Financial Assistance For more information about scholarships, financial aid and application deadlines, visit the Graduate College Web site at www.gradcollege.txstate.edu and click on Financing your Graduate Education. I worked the hardest I have ever worked and I am grateful for the opportunity to do so. The faculty is professional, caring and easy to work with, and they made me feel welcome and wanted in the field of education. In addition to my classroom work, I interned at a high school a great opportunity to see what it s really like to be a teacher. The teacher recruitment program has prepared me to get my teaching certificate and get a job as a history teacher.
