WHAT IS CLINICAL KEY AND WHEN SHOULD I USE IT? Clinical Key is a comprehensive e-library by Elsevier Science which provides access to all 500 Elsevier medical journals, 1,000 medical reference books, 9,000 clinical procedure videos and more. From the publishers: Clinical Key is a clinical insight engine that addresses the key [information] requirements of physicians, medical librarians and health professionals. It is comprehensive, trustworthy and fast. Clinical Key draws answers from Elsevier s vast online portfolio covering every medical and surgical specialty. HOW DO I GET CONNECTED? Go to hselibrary.ie and click on any of the South East counties (Carlow, Kilkenny, South Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford). Click on the resource links that appear in the centre of the screen to connect directly to available resources, or sign into your Athens account using the left-hand panel and select RESOURCES > CLINICAL KEY. SIGN INTO YOUR PERSONAL ACCOUNT IN CLINICAL KEY Use your Athens account to sign into your own personal account in Clinical Key. Click LOGIN > OPEN ATHENS LOGIN. Enter your username and password when prompted. Note: the first time you sign into Clinical Key, you will be prompted to register your account. Use your personal account to access saved content, search history, presentations, etc. 1
NAVIGATING THE CLINICAL KEY HOMEPAGE You can search and browse from the homepage and all Clinical Key screens. Use the personal account drop-down menu to access saved content, presentations, settings, etc. Click the Clinical Key icon in the upper left corner of any screen to return to the homepage. SEARCHING CLINICAL KEY The Clinical Key search bar is available on the homepage and all Clinical Key screens. As you enter your query in the search bar, the auto suggest feature displays a list of potential search terms. Click on any of the search terms to go to a results page which lists results in order of clinical relevance. Clinical Key offers more than 1,400 topic pages covering the epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment of specific diseases. Consult a topic page to get a general overview of the disease or condition with the option to view more detailed content as required. 2
NAVIGATING THE SEARCH RESULTS PAGE When you hover over a specific search result SAVE, EMAIL and PRINT icons appear. USING FILTERS TO REFINE SEARCH RESULTS On the top of the search results page you can refine your search results by SOURCE TYPE, SPECIALTY, STUDY TYPE and DATE. To refine search results by SOURCE TYPE, click one or more of the source types you re interested in. Clinical Key includes 12 types of content: books images procedures clinical trials full-text journal articles guidelines drug monographs Medline FirstConsult patient education Clinics of North America videos 3
To refine search results by STUDY TYPE, click one or more of the available study types. Clinical Key includes 4 study types: systematic reviews randomized control trials meta-analysis narrative review To refine search results by date, click on one of the available date ranges: last 6 months last 12 months last 18 months last 2 years last 5 years To remove any filter, click the icon next to the filter(s) you wish to remove. SEARCH HISTORY Once logged into your personal account, Clinical Key keeps a record of your search history so that you can easily re-run a previous search. Use the drop-down ACCOUNT MENU to access your search history. Each time you open a previous search, Clinical Key refreshes the results page and displays a list of the most recent results. To save a search, hover over the item in your search history and click the star symbol. To remove an item from search history, click the recycle bin symbol. 4
NAVIGATING THE CONTENT READER Use the panel on the left-hand side of the screen to view content outlines or navigate to a specific sub-section. Use the icons on the top right-hand side of the screen to SAVE, EMAIL and PRINT content. A PDF icon is available for most book chapters and full-text journal articles: click on the icon to view content in PDF format. USING SAVED CONTENT Use SAVED CONTENT to save content for use at a later time. On the results page, click the save icon. To select multiple items, click the multi-select box, select the items you wish to save and click the save icon. Optional: a pop-up screen appears prompting you to add tags or keywords to organise your saved content into sub-folders. 5
Use the drop-down ACCOUNT MENU to access your saved content. To remove an item from saved content, click the recycle bin symbol. USING THE PRESENTATION FOLDER Use the presentation maker to save images for use in presentations. On the results page, click the ADD TO PRESENTATION icon. To select multiple items, click the multi-select box, select the items you wish to save and click the save icon. The ADD TO PRESENTATION window opens. Enter a name for your presentation and click SAVE. The presentation maker will automatically add citations to the saved images. Use the drop-down ACCOUNT MENU to access your presentations. To remove an item from PRESENTATIONS, click the recycle bin symbol. 6
HOW TO BROWSE JOURNALS On the menu bar, click the JOURNALS button. The screen displays a complete alphabetical list of journals available in Clinical Key. To limit the list of journals: use the SPECIALTIES drop-down menu to display only journals relevant to a specific specialty use the search box to search for a journal: type all or part of the journal title Click on the journal title. The left panel displays journal archives by year with volume and issue numbers. Click on the PDF symbol to view the full-text journal article in PDF format. HOW TO BROWSE BOOKS On the menu bar, click the BOOKS button. The screen displays a complete alphabetical list of books available in Clinical Key. To limit the list of books: use the SPECIALTIES drop-down menu to display only books relevant to a specific specialty use the search box to search for a book: type all or part of the book title Click on the PDF symbol to view full-text book chapters in PDF format. 7
HOW TO BROWSE MULTIMEDIA On the MORE drop-down menu, click MULTIMEDIA. The screen displays images of multimedia items available in Clinical Key. To limit the list of multimedia: use the SPECIALTIES drop-down menu to display only images and videos relevant to a specific specialty use the search box to search for an image or video use the MEDIA TYPE drop-down menu to display only images or videos SUMMARY OF FEATURES 8
