IPSF NEWSLETTER A piece of Music from INDIA 6 Ang Ju Ying was one of the SEP Grant receivers in 2010 SEP Experiences There was a lucky star, shining on me and leading me to the special land, India. During the Student Exchange Program (SEP) organized by International Pharmaceutical Student s Federation (IPSF), I had one month attachment in Hindu Pharmacy, a famous community pharmacy in Goa, the smallest state of India. This pharmacy was founded in year 1911, and it will be celebrating its 100th year anniversary next year! Mr. Raj is the chief pharmacist here. There are an other four registered pharmacists working in this pharmacy. The main difference between Hindu Pharmacy and Malaysian ones is that the Indian one shows equal emphasis on allopathic, ayurvedic and homeopathic system, as these 3 systems are the main systems being practiced in India. On the other hand, Malaysian pharmacies usually give more emphasis on allopathic system. Being attached with this pharmacy, I get to learn about the Good Pharmacy Practice in the scope of community pharmacy and also the importance of patient-oriented services provided by the community pharmacy. I learnt that pharmacy is a highly regarded profession if we ourselves take the initiative to make a difference and serve the community. This has increased my confidence in the future where I will be serving the community with my enthusiasm and professional knowledge. This journey is a mixture of bitter and sweet, just like we have scatenato and legato in a piece of music. I can t tell you which part is the most interesting or most precious to me, because it comes in a package and I accepted it in a parcel by heart. Deepest thanks to IPSF for granting me this chance to explore the beautiful land and nourish my soul with the valuable experience. Thank you! Ang Ju Ying, Malaysia 2010

Practice report from IPSF NEWSLETTER S l o v a k i a This summer I participated in the Student Exchange Programme organized by the International Pharmaceutical Students Federation. I lived and worked in Bratislava for practically three weeks during the period of time from 6th July to 24th July. Work experience abroad enabled me to consolidate and extend my knowledge. Moreover, the project gave me an exceptional chance to get acquainted with the country where culture and way of life are totally different from that what were usual for me. Participation in the project gave me an opportunity to improve my English skills. During my stay in Bratislava I was working at the community pharmacy called Mandragora. The pharmacy was located in the same building as a medical center. It was a rather big private pharmacy. The pharmacists working at Mandragora collaborated closely with doctors from medical centre specializing in different areas. The pharmacy dealt with the preparation of medicines as well. The owner of the pharmacy was my supervisor during the practice. She was giving me different tasks and watching how I coped with them. A girl who studied pharmacy in Bratislava was undergoing practice at this pharmacy at the same time with me. I am very glad I have managed to go for practice to Europe. I am very grateful I was given this unique opportunity. I consider this experience was extremely useful for me. On my opinion, it was an excellent way to gain work experience and broaden professional outlook. In addition, this project helped me to improve my English and practice my conversational skills. Moreover, it was very interesting for me to get acquainted with the new country and people living there, their culture and customs. It was unforgettable experience of my life. SEP Database At the 56th IPSF World Congress in Slovenia 2010, the General Assembly has approved the commissioning of a website development company to recreate a new SEP database. This website development company is Webtown from Hungary. Webtown has years of experience in creating user-friendly and easily manageable databases and IPSF is very lucky to have utilised their services. The new SEP database is close to ready and will be launched at the end of November or early December. Members of SEC and I are in the midst of trouble-shooting the database to iron out all possible errors and kinks. Once it is launched, all SEOs will be notified immediately and students can then begin submitting their application. Here are some snapshots of the database: IPSF NEWSLETTER Thank you all for being patient while we are in the midst of launching the new database! Cheers, Melissa Teo Chairperson of Student Exchange 2010-11 8
