Challenges on assuming role of DOS Change of focus Change in status & relationships Learning & using new skills
Career transition: from teacher to manager Change of focus Learning to think less selfishly and take into account the bigger picture and competing demands within the organisation. Dealing with the problems of others, not just one s own. Being more aware of the bigger picture and the pedagogical/business balance.
Career transition: from teacher to manager Change of focus Learning a large amount of new information quickly so I can communicate confidently and authoritatively on a wide range of topics. Difficult to accept that I now have less time & opportunity for professional reading in areas of pedagogic interest that relate directly to carrying out my role i.e. testing & assessment, ESP course design, teacher training. Thinking as a manager seems to come easily however. Now spend most of the day either at my computer or in meetings.
Career transition: from teacher to manager Change in status/relationships Dealing with staff at a different level meant most weren t as candid as they would normally be. Seeing people in a different light was interesting; I assumed everyone did a solid job and were great teachers but that wasn t always the case. I now interact with many more people in different positions within the Institute and my relationships with teaching and management colleagues have subtly changed.
Career transition: from teacher to manager Change in status/relationships Need to accept that sometimes one will be seen within an us & them framework despite continual efforts to maintain positive relationships. At times a thick skin is required. Relationships do change with some staff members but not with others. Need to develop a thick skin
Career transition: from teacher to manager Learning & using new skills Seek better methods for time management, document control and file management, looking for new and more efficient workflow systems. Needed to be more organised with the paper work. Multi-tasking; time management; develop a that ll do attitude because there is never enough time.
Career transition: from teacher to manager Learning & using new skills The biggest professional adjustment has been performing a range of tasks simultaneously, all of which require attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy. Needed more realistic time frames with projects. Time management became an issue and initially my teaching suffered as I felt unprepared with all the other distractions.
