Gift FAQ Commonly asked questions Q. Why Mercury Payment Systems gift cards versus paper gift certificates? A. Plastic outsells paper by up to 10 times! The electronic gift card is quickly becoming the medium of choice for retailers across the country. Among the most significant reasons are: No cash back! The remaining balance stays on the card, ensuring additional opportunities to solidify the Marco s Pizza guest relationship. Real time web transactions and reporting. The Mercury Payment Systems processing platform provides access to real-time data on gift card transactions. The hassles of costly tracking and accounting of paper gift certificates are a thing of the past. Q. How does the gift card work? A. Similar to a credit card, the Marco s Pizza customer purchases a gift card for a pre-set amount, using cash, credit or check. The card is then swiped through the POS system and activated with value at the time of purchase on the Mercury host database. The customer now has a Marco s Pizza gift card redeemable at any participating Marco s Pizza franchise locations. Mercury Payment Systems stores and tracks all usage on its redundant host and provides cardby-card, real time web reporting to the Marco s Pizza franchise location on all activity. Q. How do my customers know the dollar value of their cards? A. The balance is printed on the receipt at the time of purchase, or they can swipe their card at any Marco s Pizza location to get a balance report. Page 5
Q. Can the gift card be reloaded? A. Yes, as many times as the purchaser would like, at any participating Marco s Pizza franchise location! Each time the card is reloaded, it significantly reduces the cost for each card. This is also great news for regular customers who crave the convenience of not having to carry cash or use a credit card. Q. Can I use the gift card for store credit? A. Absolutely! In lieu of cash back on a return, you can issue a Marco s Pizza gift card for the value of the return, keeping the purchase money in the Marco s Pizza franchise community. Q. How much does gift card processing cost? A. Nothing! Mercury Payment Systems provides absolutely free gift card processing to all its merchants who are already processing credit cards with Mercury or enrolled in a gift franchise agreement. Q. How do we motivate our team members about the Marco s Pizza gift card program? A. Incentives, incentives, incentives. In store displays, signage, and suggestive selling by Marco s Pizza team members will produce sales. Reward team members with gift cards they will see the benefits first hand. Page 6
Q. How will Marco s Pizza gift card redemption be covered throughout the corporation? A. Good question! Mercury Payment Systems will transfer all load dollars (activation and add value) for all locations to a Marco s Pizza central pooling account. At month end, the load dollars will be electronically transferred into the central pooling account via the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network from each location. The ACH network is the same system that banks use to move money as regulated by the Federal Reserve and can easily be set up so that Mercury moves credit card deposits and fees in and out of the same account. At the same time, all card redemption dollars will be ACH d to the redeeming location from the central pooling account. Thus, there will be a net transfer of funds, occurring midmonth for the month prior. This central pooling account enables all locations to be reimbursed in a timely manner and protects the franchises from any shortfall. All pooling activity is documented in the cross-corporate liability reporting at www.mercurpay.com and is itemized by card and summarized. There is an ACH enrollment form (amendment to the processing agreement at the back of this guide) that must be completed prior to participation in the program. Q. What happens if I sell/transfer my store? A. If this occurs, Mercury Payment Systems will automatically escrow all outstanding issuances of gift cards to the central pooling account. There will be no shortfall to the Marco s Pizza franchise community. If there is a new owner, the issuance will be treated as if it were an existing franchise location accepting your cards. Page 7
