COURAGE, STRENTH AND DETERMINATION 2014/2015 SCHOOL NEWS SEPTEMBER 2014

1 A Growing School The International School of the Algarve continues to grow. After creating international synergies in 2012 through a partnership with the 'Nobel Education Network', our school took over management of the former Barlavento International Primary School and established there the Espiche (Lagos) site, that has already completed one successful academic year under the EIA-ISA management. The start of the School Year 2014/2015 marks the effective beginning of the Almancil (Loulé) site in the facilities of the former International School São Lourenço that are now fully managed by the International School of the Algarve. The Nobel International School of the Algarve Group now has three teaching sites in the Algarve. The Espiche (Lagos) and Almancil (Loulé) sites offer the British curriculum from Pre-School up to Year 6 and the main site in Porches (Lagoa) offers the Portuguese and the British curricula from Pre-School up to the 12th grade (Portuguese) and Year 13 (British), ensuring curriculum continuity to students who complete primary British education in Espiche (top left) and Almancil (top right). During the summer, the International School of the Algarve opened its 'Summer School' to the world (see Page 2) and undertook improvement work at its three teaching sites in the Algarve, therefore providing students with an enriched learning environment. We wish everyone a great School Year!

2 Summer Language School The International School of the Algarve this year strengthened its 'Language School' opening the 'Summer School' in the EIA-ISA Boarding facilities (pictured above) next to Armação de Pera. The project offers certified English language courses that can be attended by local, external students through the 'Language School' or by boarding students, Portuguese and foreigners, through the 'Summer School'. Students - external and boarders - have access to English and European Culture classes, during the morning, in the main site of the International School of the Algarve in Porches (Lagoa). Boarding students benefit from a complementary programme of fun activities during the afternoon, staying at the EIA-ISA Boarding House (en-suite rooms, games room, television, internet, swimming pools) closely monitored 24 hours per day by educators and a psychologist. Students from several European and Asian countries attended the 'Summer School' in July and August. They all had the opportunity of making cultural visits to museums and historical sites, practising canopying and 'paint ball', taking hikes along the sea shore and enjoying various water parks and beaches with floating fun parks and jet ski rides. More information about 'Summer School' in http://www.summerschool-eia-isa.com/. Key for Schools Excellent Results Our Year 9, National Section students achieved outstanding results in the National Exam Key for Schools, introduced in the 2013/2014 school year in the Portuguese school curriculum to assess the English level of the students at the end of the 3º Ciclo. Over 50% of our students achieved marks above 90%, many achieved full marks 100%. The average for all the marks is 88%. Congratulations to the students and their teachers for such superb results, reflecting the high standard of English teaching at the International School of the Algarve.

3 Award Graciete Cid was awarded the P. Nuno Burguete Award, attributed by the Portuguese Association of Private Education Establishments (AEEP) after proposal by the International School of the Algarve. The award honours the excellence of a career of "untouchable professionalism and desire for constant innovation in the sublime task of teaching", says the association. Graciete Cid has been a teacher for 32 years at our school, where she is also the director and the oficial representative of the entire school for the ministry of education. Skating The Speed Skating Team of the Sports Club of the International School of the Algarve (CDEIA) ended the season with excellent results in the National Track Championships for Cadets and Seniors, held in Lagos, in late July. Carolina Ferreira, Laura Nagiller and Maia Batista won six national champion and first runner-up titles in individual events for the age group cadets. The three athletes with young team mate Carolina Lagos won the team event American Realy (3000 meters), setting a new Portuguese national record (4m43,199s). Pre-School Our Pre-school students spent a wonderful summer in school. Their mornings were spent at the beach or in the pools of our boarding house. The young students went on several field trips. One excursion was to Quinta dos Vales (pictured), in Lagoa, on the 14th of August. At the site students saw goats, pigs and geese and watched the crushing of grapes ready for wine making. Improvements During the summer, the International School of the Algarve upgraded each site (Porches, Espiche and Almancil) both internally and externally. Extensive work was undertaken on the sports area in Porches, in the junior area in Espiche and in teaching areas in Almancil. Further details will be included in our next newsletter. An area of outstanding improvement is the furniture upgrade in our pre-school in Porches.
