An Overview of NSLDS Reporting With a Twist!
Let s play Name That Code!
Let s play Name that Code! Each team will be assigned a color. As a team, you must work together and be the first to respond by pressing your colored egg to answer the questions in the order they are asked. One other team has an additional chance to receive points if they have an answer to add that was not already said. The team who gets the most points wins (bragging rights)! Have fun!
Let s play Name that Code! What does the code stand for? (10 pts) Why is this important (purpose/significance)? (5 pts) Who are the key players (people, departments, databases, agencies)? (5pts) When is this due (important timing factors, updates)? (5 pts) How does it affect your school (benefits/sanctions)? (5 pts) Where can more information be found (resources)? (5 pts)
Teams ready? Let s get started!
CDR
What? Cohort Default Rate
Why? In general, the Department calculates an institution s Cohort Default Rate by first identifying students who received Direct Loans and/or FFEL loans for attendance at the institution. A school s Cohort Default Rate is the percentage of a school s federal student loan borrowers who enter repayment within the cohort federal fiscal year and student loan borrowers who default within the cohort default timeframe.
Who? Title IV loan program eligible institutions Students who received a FFEL or DL loan from your school Financial aid office Third party agencies ED loan servicing centers Guarantor Agencies Default prevention task force
When? Grace period ends Generally 6 months + 1 day = official repay date 270 days/360 days Default/DF Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) October 1 September 30 Three-year period (e.g. FFY 2010) Borrowers who entered repayment in FY2010 and defaulted in FY2010, FY2011, and FY2012 Borrowers who entered repayment during FY2010 Draft rates - February Draft 3-YR CDR (2/18/14) 45 days Challenge any errors Official rates September Official 3-YR CDR (9/15/14)
How? Low default rate benefits: CDR < 15% for 3-YR Exempt from 30-day delay of first disbursement for first-time borrowers Exempt from requirement for multiple disbursements for a single term loan
How? High default rates have consequences tied and can cause loss of program eligibility CDR > 40% for any one year Institution loses eligibility to participate in the Direct Loan Program CDR 30% for any one year Institution must create a default prevention taskforce and submit plan to ED CDR 30% for two years Must submit a revised default prevention plan to ED May be subject to provisional certification CDR 30% for three years Institution loses eligibility to participate in both the Direct Loan Program and in the Federal Pell Grant Program
