Punch-Through
Punch Through!!! (Or Fast Rapid Penetration)
Punch Through The Noble David Tinsley experienced the "punch-through" while conducting preloading operations on May 8 2009 All three legs have penetrated the sea floor off the coast of Qatar, causing severe damage to the jack-up and its legs.
Punch Through Vantage Drilling Rig, Sapphire Driller experiences a bow leg run / punch through in the early morning hours (03:00) on 30/Oct/2009. It appears a zero air gap preload was being conducted, which most likely minimized potential structure failure
MAERSK VICTORY Punch-through 1997 Adelaide, Australia
RPD = Rack Phase Difference - MIGHT RESULT IN A BOW-LEGGED APPEARANCE
Maersk Drilling Towmasters Maersk Drilling employs presently nine (9) Towmasters and three (3) Towmaster trainees They have a total Towmaster Experience of 81 years where they have been in charge of more than 1700 Rig Moves Maersk Drilling are moving their own and management units with a Towmaster in charge of rig and rig move operations. The Towmaster is taking over the responsibilities of the OIM

Arrival & Installation of a Jack-Up
Arrival & Installation of a Jack-Up Pin Rig in Stand-off loc, approx 50 100 m to Final Run Anchors / utilization of DP Classed AHTV Re-connect Tugs 1. Winch Rig to Final Pos assisted by Tugs 2. Walk Rig to Final Pos assisted by Tugs Pin Rig in Final Final Position approved by Client Commence elevating Hull / Preloading Disconnect Tugs Recover Anchors Preload: Site Specific. Shallow / Deep Penetrations Punch Through / Rapid Penetrations Hold / Dump Preload Water Elevate Hull to Final Air Gap
Positioning of a Rig VERY CLOSE (Minus 1 meter) at a Platform with Pipelines Close to and between Spud Cans REQUIRES A STEADY HAND Fine tunings!
Spud Cans The Shoes of the Rig Area: 380 m 2 Diameter: 22 m Equivalent Shoe size (EU): 33.000!!!
Risk of Rapid Penetrations / Punch Through Minimum Air Gap Starting with hull at draft Preload as Close as Possible to Sea Level - Gain Buoyancy in Case of Rapid Penetrations - Weather and Sea State -Tide Preload one Leg at a time - Reducing overall Weight of the Rig and by then minimising Potential Structure Damages Close monitoring of the Initial Penetrations versus Seabed Reactions - First Indication of which Penetration Curve Spud Can follows: Lower or Upper Bound or?
Departure Freeing Legs Legs and Spud Cans are stuck in the Soil due to a Combination of Vacuum underneath Spud Can and Soil on top of Spud Can Jetting below Spud Cans will break down the vacuum and start filling up the Gap generated by Legs creeping upwards Hull Buoyancy is overcoming the Weight of Soil on top of Spud Cans
Freeing Legs Pull + Jet
Spud Can, seen from below Size, each of three: 200 380 m² NB! Tip & Jetting Nozzles
Freeing Legs PULL (No Jetting)
Thank you for your staying power STILL TIME FOR QUESTIONS!!!
