What is a CV in 2010? Job Search and Career Management By Laurent Brouat www.laurentbrouat.com A Job You Love www.laurentbrouat.com 1

A Different World Job search and career management have changed dramatically in the last 5 years and the crisis has only reinforced the trend. Did you know that... In 2008, 80% of companies used linkedin as the primary source of recruitment (Jobvite social recruitment survey) and learners today will have changed of company 10-14 times (US department of labor) by the age of 38. The number of ads on job boards has decreased: in 2008, only 12% of jobs came from job boards (8 th annual source of hire study 2009). Where did the 88% left come from? Almost half of the UK's workforce could be self-employed within five years (Guardian Oct 2006). It is a brand new world! So what is a CV in 2010? www.laurentbrouat.com 2

The Old Model The old model Tools CV = a list of duties and titles organized in reverse chronological order. You show where you have been and what you did Job boards = the main place where job seekers gather to look for a job Principles Job security and long time employment You are your job title and your company Job ads are the main way of recruiting Importance of corporate brands Full-time employment is the preferred option Only a couple of experts are recognized in their industry Background and education do matter a lot Cover letter = the letter going alongside your CV probably the last dinosaur in the job search section Daddy networking = You rely on your close network especially your family and friends www.laurentbrouat.com 3

The 2010 Model Tools 2010 Principles Individual development and reputation are key, you are your own employer, you can t rely on a single company Project-based environment where you gather individuals according to their skills and their reputation and where you co-ordinate but don t manage Loyalty to your customers/peers and less loyalty to a single company Multi-networked world and no barrier: everyone is connected Anybody can be an Expert in its industry and expertise is THE killer app Free agent nation? Your Bio and profiles on social networks (blogs, linkedin...) Speaking in front of an audience, writing articles and creating content or teaching at your company or your local association Social networks to 1)Target companies and people 2) Communicate to develop your reputation 3) Network with contacts A blog to show your expertise and connect with people, a podcast or a video (for free) Self publishing a book or publishing a book Testimonials and recommendations on your CV/profiles are your best asset Networking with whoever you want through social networks and networking events Reputation is key, but is Personal Branding over hyped? www.laurentbrouat.com 4
