NSM AND HPC IN INDIA There are Nine (9) supercomputers from India on the 44th edition of TOP 500 list, released in November 2014 National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) is approved by the Cabinet with a total outlay of 750 M USD, for a period of 7 years. The mission is implemented jointly by Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY). The National Supercomputing Mission is an enabler for the Digital India vision of the Government by making available huge data storage space and linking systems together. The mission envisages manufacturing of supercomputing systems in India and may play a lead role in Make in India vision. 25-05-2015 5

NSM AND HPC IN INDIA The mission is driven with the aim of consolidating various ongoing efforts into a nationally coordinated collaborative programme By involving developers and users of supercomputing systems as well as academic and research institutions To come up with the effective collaborative, governance and monitoring mechanisms to build culture of supercomputing for solving complex R&D problems and designing solutions addressing various country specific requirements for scientific, strategic and societal applications. A grid connecting 70 supercomputers located in R&D Institutions, Universities and the 1 million core cloud using National Knowledge Network (NKN) is also in the plan. 25-05-2015 6

BIG DATA: SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGES, INDIA Researchers across the globe and as well as in India are facing the challenges related to data deluge pertaining Astrophysics, Materials Science, Earth & atmospheric observations, Energy, Fundamental Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics & Medicine, Engineering & Technology, GIS and Remote Sensing, Cognitive science and Statistical data. Requires advanced algorithms, visualization techniques, data streaming methodologies and analytics. The overall constraints that community facing are The IT Challenge: Storage and computational power The computer science : Algorithm design, visualization, scalability (Machine Learning, network & Graph analysis, streaming of data and text mining), distributed data, architectures, data dimension reduction and implementation The mathematical science: Statistics, Optimization, uncertainty quantification, model development (statistical, Ab Initio, simulation) analysis and systems theory The multi-disciplinary approach: Contextual problem solving 25-05-2015 15

BIG DATA ANALYTICS AND THE INDIA EQUATION India to bring a strong partnership across the industry players, government, and academia. Key actions for analytics eco-system in India would be around. Talent Pool - Create industry academia partnership to groom the talent pool in universities as well as develop strong internal training curriculum to advance analytical depth. Collaborate - Form analytics forum across organization boundaries to discuss the painpoints of the practitioner community and share best practices to scale analytics organizations. Capability Development - Invest in long term skills and capabilities that forms the basis for differentiation and value creation. There needs to be an innovation culture that will facilitate IP creation and asset development. Value Creation - Building rigor to measure the impact of analytics deployment is very critical to earn legitimacy within the organization. 25-05-2015 16
