LTC Offering Sport Management Degree White Joins LTC Baseball Players Earn Honors 45 TH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT Lincoln Trail College s 45th annual commencement exercises took place on May 15 in the LTC Sports Center. LTC President Kathryn Harris gave the welcome and also presented candidates for degrees and certificates. David Carpenter, LTC Dean of Instruction, conferred degrees and certificates. IECC Board member Michael Correll gave the Charge to the Class. Instructor of Drama/Theater Barbara Shimer announced the candidates for graduation and Lee Gurley of the New Hebron Baptist Church gave the inspirational reading and closing reflections. The LTC Concert Band, under the direction of Jeshua Franklin, provided the processional and recessional marches. Brassmasters provided prelude music and the Statesmen Singers provided special music during the ceremony. Students that received a 3.5 or better cumulative grade-point-average on a 4.0 scale graduated with honors. They wore gold honor cords and received a gold seal on their diplomas in recognition of academic achievement. Members of the Phi Theta Kappa honorary society also wore traditional gold stoles. Honorary marshals were Jena Allen and Drew Halter. Attendants were Cameron Green and Katelynn Midgett. Network is a joint project of Lincoln Trail College & Lincoln Trail College Foundation

LTC NETWORK JUNE 2015 PAGE 2 MELTON NAMED TO ALL-ILLINOIS ACADEMIC TEAM Lincoln Trail College s Ellen Melton was selected to the All-Illinois Academic Team. Illinois is one of 32 states with an All-Academic Team that s co-sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, two-year college presidents and community college state associations. There were 90 students in Illinois selected to be on the team out of more than one-million community college students in the state. The 90 students were selected based on academic excellence, intellectual rigor, grade point average, leadership and service, honors, awards, and evidence that students extended their education beyond the classroom benefiting their campus and community. Melton served as the Vice President of the Alpha Iota Epsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Lincoln Trail College. She also earned High Honors and was selected as one of the Lincoln Trail College students in Who s Who Among Students in American Universities. Melton graduated from Lincoln Trail College in 2015 with an Associate in Science Degree. She plans to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Summer Learning Powered by STEAM! Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Mathematics! Curiosity Camp For youth who have completed grades K 2. Students will participate in both activities each day: Students will dance, sing and play percussion instruments with instructor Sarah Boehl Students will build, create, measure, weigh, and investigate in activities based on a variety of children s literature with instructor Holly Gallagher Youth who have completed grades 3 5 will choose one of the following activities: Music Students will explore different styles of music with Katie Zdanowski CSI: Junior Detectives. Students will observe carefully, organize and record data, and conduct simple tests to solve age appropriate crimes with instructor Jaymie Mikeworth Robotics Students will build and program Lego robots with instructor Jana Bayne Youth who have completed grades 6 8 will choose one of the following activities: Astonishing Abstract Painting Students of all ability levels will create stunning works of art using different simple abstract painting techniques, with instructor Yosha Dasenbrock Cartooning Students will create a character and develop a storyboard, incorporating facial expressions and movement, with instructor Angie Compton Movie Music! LTC NETWORK JUNE 2015 PAGE 3 LTC EXPANDS PHARMACY TECH PROGRAM Students that want to become pharmacy technicians will have two options for classes starting this fall. Lincoln Trail College will continue offering classes at its campus in Robinson and the school is also expanding the Pharmacy Technician Program to the West Richland Campus in Noble, Ill. starting this fall. The program will let students get a Pharmacy Technician Certificate in one year and includes a summer internship. It prepares students with the training, education and skills needed to pass the licensing exam available from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board and begin an entry-level job in the pharmacy technician field. Pharmacy technicians assist and support licensed pharmacists in providing health care products and medications to patients. They play a vital role in the preparation and delivery of drug products and act as a liaison for the pharmacist, doctor and patient. Technicians receive prescription and refill requests and verify their authenticity and accuracy. Pharmacy technicians prepare the actual prescriptions and sometimes the actual compounding of medication. They also prepare and label medication containers. Two new instructors will teach the Pharmacy Technician courses at the West Richland Campus. John Powless has 30 years of experience in the pharmacy field. His family LTC OFFERING SPORT MANAGEMENT DEGREE Students that want to get into the business of sports will have that chance with a new degree program at Lincoln Trail College. The Sport Management Program is a new Associate in Applied Science Degree offered at Lincoln Trail College. The degree program is designed to help get students ready for careers in the sports and recreation industry Career options include sports and fitness marketing and sales, sport retail management, recreation program planning, facilities director and coaching positions. The degree also takes care of a significant portion of general education courses for students planning to transfer to a fouryear university. Courses in Sport Management include Intro to Sport Management, Recreation and Leisure, Principles of Coaching, Sport Communication, Activity Planning and Diversity in Sports. Students will also take part in an internship. has a tradition in the pharmacy business. He has three uncles, a grandfather, a greatuncle and a nephew that are pharmacists. Powless experience includes working in family pharmacies, chain pharmacies, nursing home pharmacies, hospital pharmacies and compounding and IV pharmacies. As a part of his duties, he s trained technicians to work in both hospital and retail pharmacies. Rachel King is a veteran CVS Pharmacy technician, where she serves as a regional trainer for the company. She also works as the lead technician at her home store and helps problem solve at other area stores. Classes in the Pharmacy Technician Program include Intro to Medical Terminology, Orientation to Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy Calculations, Pharmacology, Pharmacy Operations and Interpersonal Communications. Students also complete an internship and have a certification review during the summer semester. Students that want to enroll in the Pharmacy Technician Program can call 618-393-7508.

LTC NETWORK JUNE 2015 PAGE 4 SINGING SENIORS SUMMER TOUR The Lincoln Trail College Singing Seniors will bring their talents to senior care facilities in the area this summer. The choir is made up of local senior citizens and is under the direction of Brenda Harris. The Singing Seniors start their tour in Robinson on June 4 with performances at Timbercreek Village and Heritage Health. On June 11, they ll perform at the Magnolia Center and Brookstone Estates in Robinson. The Singing Seniors travel to the Villas of Hollybrook in Newton in the morning on June 25 and finish the day with a concert that afternoon at Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong. They ll perform at the Heritage in Hutsonville on July 2. The final stop of the tour is July 7 at Brookstone Estates in Effingham. WHITE JOINS LTC Tiffany White is joining Lincoln Trail College as the Academic Counselor for the Student Support Services/ TRIO Program. White has spent the previous three years as a teacher in the Hutsonville CUSD #1. She s a 2007 Hutsonville High School graduate. White graduated with a degree in History with a Social Science Teachers Certificate from Eastern Illinois University in 2011 and is currently pursuing a Master s Degree in College Student Affairs at EIU. TRIO RECEIVES TWO GRANTS FROM WAL-MART The Illinois Eastern Community Colleges TRIO Upward Bound programs received two Wal-Mart mini-grants totaling $4,500. At Lincoln Trail College, the TRIO Upward Bound East program received a check for $2,500 to assist graduating high school seniors with tools needed to succeed in college from the Robinson Wal-Mart Store. This money will be used to reward students who have put themselves on a better path to pursue higher education. As the Academic Counselor for the Student Support Services/TRIO Program, White will help first generation, low income and disabled students at Lincoln Trail College. She ll be in charge of monitoring their academic progress. White will advise the students in the program to help with a successful transition to four-year colleges and universities. LTC NETWORK JUNE 2015 PAGE 5 PRUITT SIGNS WITH FLORIDA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY Lincoln Trail College s Jelani Pruitt is ready to continue his basketball career. The 6 5 forward signed with Florida Southern University. STATESMEN WIN GRAC CHAMPIONSHIP Pruitt played in 29 games for the Statesmen in the 2014-15 season. He averaged 11.1 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Statesmen coach Mike Ray says Pruitt is a great person. We re happy that we could enable him to continue playing basketball and further his education. At Lincoln Trail College, we strive to help our student athletes continue their educations. The Trail provides a great vehicle to help people get to four-year schools. The Lincoln Trail College baseball team had a very successful 2015 season. The Statesmen finished the season as the Great Rivers Athletic Conference Champions and advanced to the NJCAA Northern District Tournament after a second place finish in Region 24. In the Northern District Tournament, the Statesmen lost to Iowa Western and South Suburban to finish the season with a 28-24 record. Several Statesmen earned honors in the postseason. Right-handed pitcher Damon Olds was a first-team All-GRAC selection and also an All-Region XXIV selection. Catcher Chris Deaville earned All-Northern District Gold Glove honors and a Gold Glove from the GRAC. Infielder Cody Hall was selected to the All-Region XXIV Team while left-handed pitcher Weston Rivers was a first-team All-GRAC selection. Coach Kevin Bowers was the GRAC s Co-coach of the Year.
