1.1. Advanced School in Economics SSE PhD in Business Partners University of Modena & Reggio Emilia, University of Udine, University of Verona Course Duration 3 years Research Areas The PhD in Business covers most areas of academic research in management fields, such as theory of the firm, strategy, marketing, finance, organization or accounting. The accent is on methodological rigor and innovativeness and managerial relevance. Requirements Applicants must have: A postgraduate degree or a degree taken under the old Italian university system (prior to that introduced by the Italian Ministerial Decree No. 509/1999) modified by the Italian Ministerial Decree No. 270/2004. An equivalent non-italian degree, previously recognized as eligible by the members of the PhD Faculty board, solely for purposes regarding admission to the call. Advanced School in Economics SSE Economics Course duration 3 years Research topics The Ph.D. in Economics aims at providing advanced education in the research fields of the Economics Department (microeconomics, macroeconomics, public economics, econometrics, applied economics) and of the department of Applied Mathematics (financial mathematics, operations research, mathematics for economics). Within such fields students will have to develop their own research issue and provide an original contribution. Doctoral school in Global Change, Science and Policy Partners University of Sassari, University of Salento Science and Management of Climate Change Course duration 3 years Research topics The dynamics of climate variations and climate change; Methods and techniques for managing climate change and their impacts; Economic evaluation of the impacts of climate change; Cost benefit analysis of mitigation and adaptation policies; other issues related to the study of climate change and the management of environmental and socioeconomic processes related to climate change. Candidates must have one of the following: requirements Specialist degrees/ magisters degree in the area of science and economics. A degree from the old italian education system (prior to that introduced by the Italian Ministerial Decree No. 509/1999) in the area of science and economics or equivalent foreign degree (graduate level). There may also be an interview at the discretion of the Commission. Information regarding Where the commission considers necessary, an interview will be organised, held oral examination Assessment criteria for examinations and/or academic qualifications and their weighting for assessment telephonically or via internet, in order to finalize the shortlist ranking. The Commission may assign up to 100 points to each candidate as follows: Points for obligatory documents: 70 Points for other documents academic/research qualifications: 30 Minimum points for admission: 50 points for obligatory documents Obligatory documents to be produced: Research project. The candidate must develop a research project proposal (up to 10,000 characters, spaces included, written in English), in which (s)he identifies a theme connected to the abovementioned research topics using analytical, numerical, evaluation and planning approaches. Research methods and approaches may be interdisciplinary. The project proposal must refer to the research instruments that will be adopted, such as: methods for analysing environmental data; models for the numerical simulation of atmospheric and/or oceanic processes; techniques for analysing model results; tools for understanding and modelling environmental impacts and for analysing policies for controlling climate change. Curriculum vitae No. 2 Presentation/reference letters by previous tutors/professors Other documents to be considered Degree certificate and score (or equivalent), including the thesis title and an abstract in English; Masters degree certificate, including the thesis title and an abstract in English, or other specialisation courses; Academic transcript (list of courses with grades); Score in GRE, GMAT, TOEFL or similar standard tests Scientific publications, including an English abstract; Certificates of research experience at universities or research institutions; The PhD Programme is organised in two Streams: Dynamic Climatology (in Bologna) and Impact and Management of Climate Change (in Venice). All lectures are given in English by internationally renowned professors. During the first year, PhD students will attend twelve courses (30-40 hours of lectures, seminars or laboratories per course). With prior formal approval by the PhD board the candidate may attend part-time. Please note: Candidates for the Dynamic Climatology Stream should have a background in mathematics or physics at the BA level. Previous experience with numerical modelling and programming in a UNIX/Linux environment would be desirable, though not essential. The Stream on Impact and Management of Climate Change has a multidisciplinary approach and background on Economics or Environmental Science are preferable. Proficiency in mathematics is requested e.g. integral and differential calculus, linear algebra. 4
